EPOCH II

Epoch II takes us on a second cosmic voyage to explore the realms that exist outside the current day theories of space travel and reality.

To optimize your viewing experience, Epoch II is best experienced with a full screen, no artificial light intrusion, ample sound equipment, and an open mind free of predictions or expectations in order to allow the film to guide you on its expedition and take you to another place entirely. Enjoy the journey. See you on the other side.

House of Decay - NOWNESS

Filmmaker and choreographer Joshua Hubbard presents this slimily surreal portrait of The House of Decay—the Manchester-based creative house of voguing, modern dance, art, and fashion of which he is the founder, going by the name of 'Mother of the House of Decay.' The group are known for showcasing the underground and avant-garde queer dance movement at its best.

Shot to introduce audiences to their work and mission, the film arrives after their recent collaboration with the LGBT Foundation for the #sexwithoutshame ball, held in Manchester on the 17 November, that celebrated ballroom culture and commemorated those lost to HIV.

Suggest

'We all have probably dreamt about dancing, but not in such a beautiful way'

Suggest is a symbiosis between dance and images submerged in a dream.
The subconscious of the protagonist generates different images based on still life and textures. The aesthetics of these images, together with an inspiring sound, suggest her a series of movements, becoming a portrait of contemporary dance.

Jodhpur, India.

The Blue City.
A legendary and old royal city located in the middle of the desert and at the top of the high mountain
A large and impressive palace of kings.
you're probably wondering why blue?
In the past, the population of the Brahmins would have distinguished themselves from the rest of the residents of Jodhpur by painting the houses in blue.
Soon all the inhabitants of the city painted their home and hence came the name, Jodhpur.

10 hours accumulate from two days of trip
I spent most of 10 hours filming everything that was moving next to me, trying to pass on to others what I was experiencing. Many feelings, many experiences,
Noise, confusion, smells .. And, most of all, a lot of glances of sadness, joy, interest, and there were also looks I could not quite figure out what they were.
The first impression of the local inhabitants was the fact that everyone was dealing with his own,
in his territory.
They neutralize everything that is not related to their work.

On one of the walks between the alleys, we happened to meet an improvised gym.
Pretty amateurish, but very impressive in the authentic atmosphere he produces.

Every alley, house, or just a street we had reached, had looks.
There were very deep looks mainly because they people were trying to figure out who you are?! Where are you from?!
When I went to people to photograph them, it did not really interest them why I put a camera in front of them.
Privacy does not interest them so much.

When we were on our way to the Fortress Palace when walking to it required physical fitness, we encountered one of the residents, a years old man.
We were very interested in talking to him.

We were around people all the time.
I kept feeling how many of these people were trying to survive, jumping on every opportunity there was to produce a living.
All around was always very dirty, not unpleasant smells ... and no one is interested ... well, after the strange sign I saw at the entrance to the palace fortress that says "Here is not allowed to spit" the truth I understand why.
That's their culture, that's how they live.
We, the normative people, are busy, very busy with them.
Family, work, money, chase. Day after day.
We just think that we live and enjoy everything we produce for ourselves,
And that is the point I finally reached.
These, these people, we were around them and tried to understand how they lived like that?! These are the same people who just made me realize that we are so different from them.
They are happy people. They do not have the need to chase day after day after their glory, they have no one to impress and certainly not to want.
They smile, shake hands, for no reason.
Live the moment as long as they exist.
Women, men and children who look around, without telephones, without screens, and bombarded technology.
They are the same people who just want to survive.

"The fact that you exist does not mean you are alive".

FENCE

Several women from different generations of the same family loudly confront each other with their views on life, love, desire, and the patriarchy. The family gathering turns into chaos while the youngest one – the only boy – looks for an escape.

"Fence" is this week's Staff Pick Premiere! Read more about it here: vimeo.com/blog/post/staff-pick-premiere-fence

This is a very simple story, yet it reveals many complexities of our society, identifying them through characters’ way of communication, struggling to filter and convey their experiences and beliefs. 'FENCE' is not about the customs or the traditions; they are there and they are present on screen, but they are not the issue. The issues are within the characters, their relationships, and the drama. In that sense, it doesn’t matter where they come from, because being a daughter, mother, wife, or any part of a family dynamic is a universal topic that happens everywhere, to everyone.

New Year's Experiment

My husband has been fascinated (possibly slightly obsessed) about drawing machines for a while now, and he recently figured out a way to do this lil' hack on his 3D printer and repurpose it to make it draw with normal pens.

He was testing it with some Moebius drawings and I thought the result was so awesome! It had a very human quality to it, filled with flaws, line variations and stuff :) And so many endless cool explorations one can do with different tools and surfaces to print on!

Anyway, we thought it would be fun to do a (very homemade) animated experiment together, printing 24 frames and giving them to friends as a New Year's card.

Happy 2019, everyone!

The End Of The Line

Something about slack-lining or wire-walking has always intrigued me. What compels people to hoist themselves up hundreds of feet into the air to walk across a wire? What is it they think about when they’re up there?

My research led me to the slack line community in Cape Town, South Africa: an extremely interesting and enigmatic bunch. They spoke at length, often philosophically; about the emotions experienced when being up there “on the line”. For some, it was a transportative and lucid experience that would conjure nostalgic childhood memories. Others would speak about the heightened physical experience of being up in the air, and the exposure to the elements.

Special thanks to Charmaine and Rob Kritzinger, Andy Alexander, Burghen Siebert and Jeff Van Breda for welcoming me into the SA slackline community.

Under the Viaduct - NOWNESS

Vancouver-based cinematographer Norm Li—who was director of photography for two previous films on NOWNESS, TR/ST’s ‘Destroyer’ and ‘Fading Light’ by Nights & Weekends—presents his directorial debut: a meditative examination of the spaces occupied by society’s most deprived.

“The idea for the film was inspired by walking past a viaduct early one morning. It was quiet except for the sound of heavy rain and vehicles speeding by. A few tents, inhabited by the homeless, blew in the wind, perched in large bodies of muddy water. Various entertainment venues and condos were just around the corner. It was this decisive contrast that convinced me to make the film.

“Ultimately, I wanted to make a film that explores the divisions within humanity. The viaduct becomes a metaphor, portraying how luxury developments can destroy homeless communities. I captured the footage in a slow, single shot on 35mm film. While no humans appear in the film, it is undeniably about humanity—and how we live together—as a whole.”

Element

Element is non-narrative 3 minutes film and it’s all about three main elements - earth, water and air. From Norwegian fjord to lonely shores of Lofoten island, from beautiful northern coastline to rocky beaches of Portugal, from Icelandic majestic landscapes to Russian mirror like lake, these elements are always present in each and every scene of this film.

I really like my films to have slow, peaceful and cinematic feel to them and I stay true to it in this film as well. Beautiful, haunting sound score from Tony Anderson is perfect for bringing to life majestic landscapes.

With each film I try to push myself to do more, and this one is not an exemption. In post production stage I choose to move to a different software suit and learn it from ground up. To go further, I’ve challenged myself to do some vfx in several shots.

Technical info:
- All footage shot on DJI Phantom 3 Pro, DJI Phantom 4 Pro, and DJI Mavic Pro.
- Several ND filters from Polar Pro were used for filming.
- I used Davinci Resolve 15 for editing, vfx, sfx and grading.
- Adobe Audition was used to mix sound score.
- Adobe After Effects were used on several shots for additional motion blur and denoise.
- Original music by Tony Anderson was purchased at Musicbed.

SILVESTER/New Years Berlin 2018-2019

In Berlin for new years/Silvester, everyone shoots guns and fireworks off in the streets and it's super rowdy. It also seems pretty dangerous but everyone is having a great time. Here's some stuff I filmed of people doing that in Neukolln and Kreuzberg.

BEHOLD (in 4K)

All filmed within 20 miles of where I live in Ashland, Oregon on the Sony A7Riii.

While I love time-lapse photography as it uniquely and exquisitely renders the aliveness of the Earth and cosmos, as a process it deepens me in my relation to the spirit of a place. I experience it as a genuine opportunity to more than just see but to behold (and to be beheld).

In a time of visual over-saturation, the act of beholding has become gravely endangered. At the risk of adding more visual content to our already rapidly flashing screens, I offer what I hope serves as some small antidote in BEHOLD.
