Lisbon moves

Somehow Lisbon feels like a trapped in a time warp with modern sensibilities. Loud and silent at the same time. Lisbon is amazingly beautiful in every aspect, that's why it's so hard to capture its everyday spirit.

Welcome to America

Yeni González is one of the mothers who suddenly found herself thousands of miles away from her children this spring, after President Donald Trump’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy went into effect. This TIME Red Border Film documentary shows how grassroots activists banded together to transport González from a detention center in Eloy, Ariz., to New York City, where her children were placed at a social service agency after the undocumented family crossed the U.S.-Mexico border and was apprehended by the Border Patrol in May.

Before John Hughes, before Dazed and Confused, and before Twilight, there were the Beach Party films – one of the first times Hollywood produced films that were specifically designed for and marketed to teenagers. Let's dive in to what is undeniably one of the oddest subgenres in films history (but maybe one that was also pretty fun?).

Rambling: Irvine Welsh - NOWNESS

"Miami's a sunny place for shady people" explains Irvine Welsh, the Scottish-born, US-based author whose standout works include that great, miasmic parable to the 1990s—Trainspotting. The sun-drenched Florida city (immortalized both by Will Smith and Miami Vice) that Welsh calls home is a hotbed of contradictions—a suitable setting for the award-winning and generation-defining author's worldview: where psychedelic experiments and petty crimes coexist alongside the city's obsession with wealth, wildness, and workouts. "I was surprised when I found out he lived in Miami," explains filmmaker Will Robson-Scott of his film's iconic subject. "It made me wonder which Irvine Welsh I would find. But the man who met me was highly accommodating and nomadic—his lifestyle based around wandering. He has swapped a lifestyle of booze and debauchery for juices and boxing sessions. Everyone is a product of their environment, even if those vices remain dormant under the surface."

Joey Dosik - Don't Want It To Be Over (Dir. Cut)

Sleepy Chan - NOWNESS

The Temple of Sleepy Chan isn’t a fiction, explains filmmaker Jade Jackman of her latest collaboration with London-made, Japan-rooted style brand Hanger—it’s a place we can actually visit. In this film, Hanger's latest collection—inspired by cultic influences and the slow motion of Japanese tea ceremonies—is mirrored in the color-coded rooms and otherworldly interiors of the Temple: a place that is both timeless and infinite, allowing the visitor—or, better, the worshiper—to relax from the heady pace of modern life. But there’s a catch to this beguiling utopia, explains Jackman: “You can’t think about time while in the Temple. Given how constantly connected and engaged we are, I wanted to allude to how this state cannot last. So, eventually, a model will arrive—notifying you that it’s your time to leave the Temple of Sleepy Chan.” In time, we’ll all be evicted from paradise.

Ceremony

I believe that love has boundaries for who or whatever it is for, my love is for picking up my camera and capturing the world. So last week I was asked by a friend if I could capture a wedding ceremony for Stephanie and Sam as their Videographer had just pulled out 2 days before the wedding. I'm not commercial and far from a wedding photographer but I agreed and made this video of the ceremony and confetti celebrations for them with help from my son. This is my gift to the wonderful, enthusiastic and happy couple.

The Great Haboob Chase on Interstate 8

On July 9th, 2018, I woke up in Blythe, California, and checked the forecast one more time and it confirmed what I already knew the day before: the potential for an awesome storm rolling west down Interstate 8 was looking pretty good. And with that came the likelihood of a dust storm, or haboob. I already had the entire day's route planned out...I'd hit south near the border towns of Sells and Santa Rosa, then head back north to I-8 to catch the storm outflows from Phoenix and central Arizona.

Rarely does a forecast come to fruition so perfectly...but this one did. I chased some good severe storms in the far southern portions of the state, and then headed north...hitting the town of Chuichu south of I-8 just as things got rolling. A big microburst kicked up a wall of dust that would move west and eventually merge with other, strong storms that rolled through Phoenix.

We jumped on I-8 and got west out of the dust and pulled over first at Vekol Road, my favorite spot along that freeway. The wall of dust was incredibly impressive...shelf cloud over it, the dust connecting right into the cloud base...it was amazing.

It was around 5:00pm at that point...and the chase would continue, for hours, all the way to Yuma. One of my final shots came around 8:30pm in the area of Ligurta. All told, around 140 miles and three and a half hours of chasing. Never have I chased a wall of dust for that long. Or been chased!

Besides July 5th, 2011...this was hands down, the best haboob I've ever seen. So many shapes and sizes. Incredibly density and definition. And the colors at sunset. Magnificent.

The film has all the clips from start to finish...somewhat in order, but not always. The microburst at the start was in Chuichu and the final scene was Ligurta.

It was fun to not only share this with some other chasers all having the time of their lives, but also with two of my kiddos. What an experience to have together!

Hope you enjoy this, and the music by Ryan Taubert.

I shot around 5,000 frames on two Canon 5DSR's for this. Lenses were the Canon 11-24mm and 50mm 1.2.

Edited with Lightroom, LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

SUMMER NIGHTS IN THE CANADIAN PRAIRIES - 4K

You probably know about the majestic Canadian Rockies or even the Canadian boreal forest but have you ever heard of the Canadian prairies? They are a very peculiar landscape and ecosystem found in the foothills of the Canadian rocky plateau. They extend to much of southern and central Alberta and Saskatchewan. The dominant south-western winds (Chinook) bring in a warmer climate than that of north and the mountains act as a shield and give very sunny and favorable conditions for a particular fauna and flora to thrive. In the winter the prairies are barren and desolate but when summer kicks in they come to life! The prairies are a perfect location to breed cattle (cows, horses, bisons…) as they can graze on endless hilly pastures. There you can also cross path with an abundant wildlife like big carnivores (bears, wolves, wolverines, coyotes, mountain lions, many bords of prey…) but also herbivores like deers, moose…

The Canadian prairies are extremely scenic and offer a very wide variety of landscapes that I wanted to capture in this astrolapse movie. Since it really is cowboy and Indian country, my thoughts were to get the grassy hills swept by the wind and lit by the moonlight, with the Rockies in the background. I also managed to capture some cattle grazing under the northern lights in southern Alberta next to the Montana border. Further east in Alberta, you can find the mythical badland valleys (or ‘coulees’) carved by time (Dinosaur Provincial Parc). The differential erosion of sedimentary layers previously deposited has helped sculpt out those fairy chimneys or ‘hoodoos’ over time, which made an excellent ‘prehistoric’ foreground for noctilucent cloud timelapses. One of those valleys was filled with water and I was able to capture it all the way east in Saskatchewan (Buffalo Pound National Park). If you take the road further north to the central regions of those western provinces, the praires’ face changes a bit and you can feel there’s more water there. The green grass, willow trees and countless bodies of water make it easy to take gorgeous scenes playing with the mirroring of the water. It might have been pure serendipity (and also hard work!) but I managed to capture a beautiful display of aurorae and noctilucent clouds at the same time reflecting in some of Bashaw’s lakes as I was out shooting with Darlene and Theresa Tanner, two extremely talented photographers I stayed with (facebook.com/treeanddar/). This scene even helped me get my very first APOD and I am extremely honored and proud! Lastly you can’t be talking about the Canadian prairies without mentioning the stormy weather that can build up over the mountains and slide east potentially giving monstrous thunderstorms, lightning shows and even tornadoes. Even if we wanted to go storm chasing we ‘only’ got a beautiful night-time lightning show near Alix, Alberta, with gorgeous bolts showcased during the climax of this short film.

Whether you are a nature lover, a weather addict or even a star-gazer, the Canadian prairies are one of the best places to enjoy outdoor activities in North-America and I strongly recommend a visit there. The possibilities are endless and there’s something for everybody as my video hopefully demonstrates. Aurorae, shooting stars, noctilucent clouds, fireflies, lightning, bright nights: those are the phenomena that I was willing to capture and combine with some of the most iconic places of the Canadian prairies. Everything was recorded with the Sony a7rII, Sony a7s and Canon 6D, as well as a wide variety of lenses (Sigma, Samyang) ranging from 14 to 500mm. Motion created using the Vixen Polarie in a panning mode and the Syrp Genie generation I 3-axis system. All this content is copyrighted AMP&F and may NOT be used without the owner’s permission (shoot me an email for inquiries at adphotography2410@gmail.com). The soundtrack ‘Steady’ by Roary was licensed through Musicbed and may not be used for any other purpose. Finally I really want to thank Darlene, Theresa, Dr. Jason Reimuller, Captain Te Keoti, Rosalee Schmaltz and Amy Patterson for their generosity and help.

The Swarm Chaser

Last year a swarm of honey bees landed right behind my backyard, so I searched the internet looking for answers on what to do. I came across the Swarm Hotline via portlandurbanbeekeepers.org. I called the number and within 10 minutes a super enthusiastic beekeeper named Mandy called me back. Luckily she lived pretty close and came right away. I asked if I could film her catching the bees and she was totally down.

After filming the bees, I came back with this absolutely gorgeous footage of bees in slow-motion. I figured there had to be more I could film of Mandy and her beekeeping. So when the next swarm season came, I contacted Mandy asking her to do a little documentary on her process. This is the result of that.

It's a joy of mine to find someone so passionate about their work, whether it be in photography, painting, crafting, woodworking or bee-keeping. Mandy's infectious and inviting personality drew me in and kept me wanting to document her process even more. There is still more of a story to tell, but for this swarm season, this will do for now.

Check out more of Mandy at waggleworkspdx.com

WIT H IN - For Better Mental Health

A deeply personal film made as a contribution to MIND - The UK mental health charity.
As a fundraiser, we've launched a limited edition photobook for the project, with all proceeds going straight to MIND. You can buy them here...
cataloguelibrary.co.uk/within/

Approximately 25% of people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. Crowns & Owls consists of a group of individuals who are part of that 25%.

“WITHIN" is an ode to our myriad of collective experiences with mental health - an attempt of visually conveying the spectrum of sensations we’ve felt during the navigation of our individual conditions. The project features our long time collaborator, friend and fervent supporter of MIND Charity; Dennis Okwera.

Institutions like MIND provide essential services for people in the UK. The fight for better mental health is an ever-changing one and the conversation has reached new heights in recent years, but there’s so much left to do. We have to get people talking about conditions beyond just anxiety, depression and PTSD, we have to vote for MP’s who aren’t keen to destroy the NHS… we have to keep pushing. We are proud to support MIND through our work, in return for how much they have supported us as people.

Visit mind.org.uk/ to find out how you can help in the fight for better mental health.

Everywhere Unseen - New Zealand

This is the first in an ongoing series where we take four photographers, send them out into the world, and see what they bring back. The idea is, while they're all travelling to the same destinations, each photographer will have a different take on his surroundings, providing us with four completely different points of view. For this first outing, we went to the South Island of New Zealand and met with Kiwi photographers Jake Mein, Nick Rapley, Jereme Aubertin, and Beth Eastell. Everyone loaded into the truck, cameras in hand, and for four days we travelled through the most remote areas of Te Waipounamu, stopping at Wanaka, The Catlins, Dunedin, and then back through Saint Bathans. So here it is, Everywhere Unseen in New Zealand.
