THE SHAMAN - a mind-bending short by Marco Kalantari

The highly acclaimed, blockbuster-style short film THE SHAMAN premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York in 2015. After that it ran successfully at numerous film festivals around the globe, including Los Angeles, London, San Diego and the DragonCon in Atlanta. The trailer turned into a viral sensation with over 4 million views.

The dark year 2204, in a world that has seen 73 years of continuous war. Recently mankind re-discovered the arts of Shamanism. The Shaman’s school of thought believes that every person or object has a soul. During battle Shamans step over into the Netherworld to find and convert the souls of their enemies’ giant battle machines. This tactic enables a single man to overcome an invincibly seeming steel monster.

This is the story of Joshua, a Shaman, who is sent on a mission to convert the soul of a giant battle colossus. He does not yet know that the soul is prepared for his coming and that the deadly psychological soul-to-soul confrontation in the Netherworld will be on eye level.

Next Year by Crashing White Horses

Time for some festive fun and so when ‘larger than life’ Andy the lead singer of the band Crashing White Horses asked me to help him make a video for his new Christmas song I was more than happy to do so. We had a great evening in a little pub tucked away in the rural countryside and for a short time I turned director and cameraman. The people were great and by the end of the evening we were all singing and dancing.

Liars - Mess on a Mission

This video was such an act of faith. We had everything against us to make it happen, so it is a bit of a miracle it even exists.
Since I first started doing music videos, my main goal was to get to direct a Liars video. I've been a huge fan for years. So when it finally did happen, it was one of the happiest moments in my career, and in my life. I'll never thank enough the band, the commissioner John Moule, Lana and Jett from Ways and Means, everyone at Shipping and Handling, who spent days and weeks working on the VFX, and specially Claire Stubbs, my producer at Partizan. Even after I had left the company she hooked me up with John because she knew I was such a fan.
This video is one of the jobs I am most fond of, even if I am conscious the end result suffers from obvious budget constraints.

APOLLO

Between the years of 1969 and 1972 the human race accomplished arguably the single greatest technological achievement of all time, when humans first set foot on another celestial body.

This short film is a tribute to the NASA Apollo Program space missions which successfully landed 12 men on the Moon. It was created entirely from still images from the Project Apollo Archive, which has bought together scans of all the original unprocessed images taken by the crews of the Apollo 10 to 17 space missions.

The elements that make up each image were separated with Adobe Photoshop and then animated within After Effects to create movement and parallax between the layers in the image. Effects and textures have been added to create a sense of action and transition between the scenes.

I hope this film inspires other people to learn more about the history of space exploration.

Tasermiut - Greenland's Wilderness

Tasermiut Fjord is a remote wilderness on the southern tip of Greenland. Accessible only via helicopter and boat it sees relatively few hikers. With some of the biggest rock walls in the world it is famous amongst the climbing community, but little known to the public.

In August 2015 I took a friend on an 18-day unsupported backpacking trip to photograph this remarkable area. We packrafted on the fjord and hiked high mountain passes. Carrying 2 full camera kits, an ultralight time-lapse slider I designed, camping kit and all my food my backpack weighed 35kg. Throughout the trip we struggled across the hardest unpathed terrain I have ever experienced whilst being plagued by mosquitoes. But in the evenings we made fires, caught fish swam in mountain streams and immersed ourselves in nature. We left feeling exhausted but privileged to have experienced true wilderness. This short film captures a small portion of this incredible landscape.

Rushing Ruegen - rather rainy

With the exception of one day it rained nearly all the time but I decided to enjoy my Ruegen holidays nevertheless.
The video was shot entirely on the iPhones 5s and 6 plus.

Running around with two (phone) cameras, I was able to record most of the added sounds myself. But I also downloaded some of them from soundbible.com, especially the squeaking noise at 0:36 - 0:41 and the sheep at 1:55 - 2:04.

The Dark Skies of the Desert Southwest (Death Valley National Park)

A dark-sky journey through Death Valley National Park. Death Valley is well known for having one of the hottest recorded temperatures on Earth, but few realize that the park is also known as having some of the darkest skies in the country.

In early October a group of 15 photographers flew into the southwest to learn how to capture and produce timelapses, and more specifically, dark-sky astro timelapses. Most of the students at the workshop had never captured a timelapse, but after the first few hours in class they were out capturing the the night sky - in motion.

This film was produced using timelapses from seven of the photographers during the two workshops. Students register for these workshops not only to learn how to produce breathtaking timelapses, but also to experience the night sky first hand. Today, most of the country lives in areas where light pollution has made it impossible to view the night sky. All we see when we look up are a few of the brightest stars and planets. Our workshops are held in locations where the darkest skies in the country exist. We choose locations based on the sky darkness while also choosing dry climates that help guarantee a successful shoot each night

People of Nowhere

I have heard and read different opinions about the wave of Syrian refugees who try to make their way in to EU. Then I went to Lesvos. 7 Days on the Greek Island gave me a healthier human perspective on the situation. Seeing in my own eyes the people behind the headlines and feeling their deep struggle, broke my heart.
Is this the “threat” people talk about? All I could see was courages people in a crisis. I also got to meet brave volunteers from all over the world who reach out to help all people regardless of their religion, race or background. That inspired me.
My hope is that this video will shake some of the bad ideas we sometimes feed ourselves with.

Drawing Operations is an ongoing collaboration between an artist and a robotic arm. The project investigates ideas of automation, autonomy, and collaboration as an exercise in behavioral empathy.

Sougwen Chung and her Drawing Operations Unit: Generation 1, (D.O.U.G._1) explore mimicry and procedural mark-making as a simple drawing performance between a human and mechanical agent. Alongside developer Yotam Mann, the behavior of the robotic arm was designed to mimic the drawn gesture in real time through the use of a ceiling-mounted camera and computer vision. As D.O.U.G., the robotic arm, interprets the mark of the drawing collaborator, the human agent then responds in kind, resulting in a synchronous, interpretive performance.

Drawing Operations is the first stage of an ongoing study examining human and robotic interaction as an artistic collaboration. Further stages include will examine memory, autonomy, and agency.

At the earliest sign of winter’s end, brothers Janne and Samu Amunét ventured towards the Arctic Circle. Constant travelers, they were eager to leave their home in Helsinki and explore the recently thawed Lofoten archipelago on the northern coast of Norway for their first road trip of the year. The twenty-four hour drive would take them through parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway still solidly frozen. However upon arriving on the coast the weather tempered. Usually a destination for summer trips, the idyllic village of Å was empty and quiet in a way only remote places can be.

An essay on its memory and an exploration of the peri-urban development of ancestral farmlands (a story that plays across many parts of the country). 'Un village entre la tramontane et le marin' means the village is located in a dynamic climatic zone, at the foothills of the Pyrenees and close to the Mediterranean, a region swept by many winds, the main ones being the 'tramontane', which comes in cold gusts from the mountains, the other the 'marin', a humid and muggy wind from the sea. A village living between a modernity that has permanently changed its way of life and ancient traditions of solidarity and mutual help. Our narrator is one of the last original farmers living there: "yes we had problems before, but now we create them."
