How To Catch a Bird is a stop motion short based on a childhood memory. It's the graduation film I made for my masters in animation at AKV St. Joost Breda.
When I was eight; my dad taught me how to fish. He told me to take the worm off the hook after fishing, but I had no idea why. After fishing I forgot about the worm and left it dangling on the hook. If I only knew then what the consequence of this action would be.

Visualtraveling - The Edge of Arabia

While the turmoil in the Middle East doesn't seem to have an end in sight, the Visualtraveling project zigzagging around the Eurasian peninsula has somewhat concluded. Exploring the nations on the edge of the Arabian peninsula was mandatory even while Yemen was going through a coup and was swept with chaos. But considering the past ventures such as taking a ten thousand kilometres trek on the Trans-Siberian, meeting the 'stans, turning ginger in Bangladesh, taking the Mandalay Express, circling the Black Sea, traversing Iran and the Caucasus in the Persian Version and various other smaller journeys, the dedication to explore this last pocket of Eurasia with the mysterious Dragon blood trees lurking on the island of Socotra was intriguing.

ROCKET WARS

A war to keep the peace. In the small village of Vrontados on the Greek island of Chios, there is unrest. For over a century, parishioners of two Greek Orthodox churches have engaged in a battle on Holy Saturday, firing more than 100,000 homemade rockets at each other’s churches once the sun goes down.

This film is a reflection of a sense of devotion that feels lost in the modern world. Seeing people with so much passion for the craft and tradition of rocket-making was invigorating to witness while filming. The idea of giving your heart and soul over to something that you love is at the core of the story. We’re all after something we can give our lives to, something that can help create deeper connections with each other. It’s strange to think that this tradition can do it – but that’s a reality for many in Vrontados. They live and breathe rockets, and that’s what brings them together, especially during their Easter holiday.

Its origin is unclear. One theory holds that churches on the island faked a civil war during the Turkish occupation so they could celebrate Easter without being plagued by war. Accordingly the ruse worked, as the Turks kept a safe distance, allowing the villagers to attend Easter Mass.

The footage for this short timelapse film was mainly captured in 2014 during a hiking trip in the Alps in Austria ("Lechquellrunde"). Some of the scenes are from 2012 from another hike at the border between Austria and Germany ("Steinernes Meer"). For pan and tilt shots I used a self built 2-way head and a self built slider for the linear movement. Shots from 2014 were taken with a Pentax K5ii and the Sigma 17-70mm. Die Zeit, in der das Gebiet des heutigen Deutschlands von undurchdringlichen Wäldern bedeckt war, ist leider vorbei. Heute dominieren Kulturlandschaften, dichte Besiedlung und Landwirtschaft. Die verbliebenen Wälder sind meistens Nutzwälder, zur Holzernte bestimmt. Aber es gibt Stellen, Inseln in der Landschaft, die noch nach richtigem Wald aussehen.

Davon handelt dieser Kurzfilm, aufgenommen vor den Toren Berlins und im Studio. Er zeigt eine Auswahl der Natur, die es hier tatsächlich so noch gibt, von jedem selbst zu erleben.
Landschaftsaufnahmen mischen sich mit im Studio gedrehten Zeitraffern, die das Wachsen oder Aufblühen von hier beheimateten Pflanzen, das Schmelzen von Schnee oder das Entstehen von Eis zeigen.

Unfortunately the time when the territory of present-day Germany was covered with impenetrable forests is over. Today cultural landscapes, dense population and agriculture dominate. The remaining forests are mostly productive forests, intended for timber harvesting. But there are places, islands in the landscape, which look like proper forest.

That is what this short film is about, taken at the gates of Berlin and in the studio. It shows a selection of nature that is actually still there, to experience by everyone.
Landscape photography alternates with timelapse photography, taken outdoor and in studio, show the growing and flowering of plants, melting snow or freezing the nature.

It’s been nearly 30 years since the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Follow my wife and I as we explore the city of Pripyat, the abandoned ghost town near the nuclear reactor.

Part 5:
After leaving the old school, we spot a familiar sight. The iconic pool and fitness centre of Pripyat was made famous in a video game called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Having played that game as a teenager, my wife and I felt that we had been in this place before. The layout is nearly exactly as the game portrayed, only larger and more eerie in real life.

It was discomforting to learn that in the first 5 years after Pripyat was evacuated, people would sometimes return to swim in the pool as the plumbing and electricity still functioned there. If we were simply trying to avoid contact with water droplets, a swim in the radioactive pool would be devastating.

Nowadays people seem to go further in showcasing themselves on so many platforms like the internet and reality series on the television. The freedom of online anonymity and the digital companionship inviting people to go beyond their own boundaries. It became a play-field of doing weird things, a derailed society in which moral standards are becoming blurry and being pushed.

This was the main thought from where I started and which I exaggerated. I wanted to show a group of mentally disoriented characters, victims of personal obsessions trapped in their own reality. They’re part of an online entertainment experience that’s serving the mass with their peculiar stories. I tried to evoke that feeling that you shouldn't be watching but can't stop looking and you feel some tragic discommode coming up. Create a certain indistinctness with the characters in the video, are they aware of their role and consciously playing with you?

It is based on an innovative mixture of documentary photography, video testimonies and location sound recordings recorded in Iraq over several years.

We just put on a successful exhibition of an early version of this work in London but are now running a crowd funding campaign so we can show the work to more people through future exhibitions and by producing a book based on the work.

This is a portrait of Shawn Theodore, a street photographer in Philadelphia.

Backstory:
Early last year I stumbled upon an Instagram account named XST. A collection of powerful, vibrant photos of Philadelphia's population sprinkled his account, immediately captivating me. As I quietly admired his work, the mystery of both the man posting them and his methods of creation toyed with my imagination. By late fall, my curiosity piqued, and so I stepped outside my comfort circle and reached out to him. I flew across the country and was received by one of the kindest, warmest humans I've ever met. Shawn Theodore, a creative director by day and moonlighting street photographer, showed me around the city and let me ride co-pilot as he went about his fantastic passion of photographing the wild colors and people of one of America's oldest working-class cities.

What he discovered was something else entirely. In a country trying to get over the trauma of a genocide, Team Rwanda represents a lot more than sport.

When a Lake Turns to Desert

This spring the freshmen traveled to the Mojave National Preserve in California to study this fragile ecosystem, to witness the degradation people are causing and to discuss the politics associated with the formation of the preserve in 1994.

The impact of past and future climate change is also written in the desert for the students to read. At the peak of the last Ice Age, 18,000 years ago, many of the desert playa, or dry lake beds, were full of water and home to fish and shellfish. The water vanished a few thousand years ago when shifts in Earth’s orbit changed wind systems and rainfall. Today the Mojave National Preserve is the driest place in North America.
