SIBLINGS

For all you Brothers and Sisters out there... this ones for you.

Our stories are all different, yet the same, and the names are endless: Adventure buddy, co-pilot, copy-cat, tag-along, queen, king... The list is long, but what it boils down to is simply brother or sister, or as I like to put it, best friend, worst enemy.
Childhood was like one giant experiment and, being the younger sibling, my fate as human guinea pig was sealed from the get-go. But like Dad always said, "Every scar is one part story, and one part wisdom," and by the age of 10 us kids could have opened our own library. Over the years, we gained a lot of “wisdom” together, trying to best each other and take on the world. Through it all, bikes have fueled our adventures, sparked our imaginations, led us through a few battles, and continually reminded us of what’s most important: we’re all family.

No, I Don't Want to Dance!

These are dark times. The growing amount of political, social and environmental issues fill the agendas of millions of concerned people around the world. You may think that in our modern and thorough times, every potential hazard has been identified. You would be wrong. There is a critical issue that, as yet, nobody has taken into consideration: how dangerous dance can be.
We’re living in a world where dance is everywhere and, believe it or not, your kids will one day be asked to dance. Blindly following other people’s “movements” may lead to catastrophic consequences.
This short film aims to raise awareness of how deadly dangerous dance can be.
So hopefully, one day, when someone asks you, you will be able to reply: "No, I don't want to dance!”

SELF 03: The Arrangement

The Arrangement is the third incarnation of the international art enterprise, SELF—curated by Saint Laurent’s creative director, Anthony Vaccarello. The initiative aims to find artists that evoke the Saint Laurent attitude of confidence, individuality and self-expression. To this end, Vaccarello commissioned individuals who were aligned with his own values and the spirit of the brand. “The Saint Laurent woman has never been submissive,” he says. “She makes all her own decisions.”

SELF launched at Paris Photo 2018 with an exhibition by Japanese photographer Daidō Moriyama, followed by an installation from performance artist Vanessa Beecroft at Art Basel Miami. Vaccarello gave the artists full reign; their only brief was self-expression. Less Than Zero, American Psycho, and White writer Bret Easton Ellis is the latest recruit to join the multidisciplinary project—and The Arrangement marks his latest directorial vision.

In this film about jealousy and romantic obsession, two young men vie for the attention of a woman whose affection seemingly swings between the suitors. “The Windmills of Your Mind,”as covered by Petula Clark, acts as both the soundtrack and narrative to this tale of alternating passions. “The windmills of your mind are the things you project onto a neutral reality when you are trapped within the throes of desire,” Ellis comments. The director juxtaposes the dreamy, elegant surroundings of the characters’ world with the reality of their emotional turmoil. “Infatuation can often make the tactile world seem fictional,” he adds. “This is why I wanted the film to have an LA feel—a place where fantasy and reality often collide.”

Ellis’s career has resisted categorization as he modulates between novelist, scriptwriter, podcaster and director. The interdisciplinary contrarian has never shied away from self-expression or been cowed by conventional opinion. Echoing Ellis’s approach, Vaccarello says, “Saint Laurent represents a form of freedom.”

MEMORIES OF MYANMAR

We spent over 2 weeks traveling through Myanmar and we instantly fell in love with this truly special country.
The fact that place was relatively closed off to the rest of the world for the past few decades means that traditional cultural practices are still very much alive.
There is so much to do and see in Myanmar, from the gorgeous temples of Bagan to the serenity of Inle Lake, vibrant city of Yangon and many more.
This entire film (or better said "a few random shots") was filmed with A7Sii + 28mm lens.

Merryweather Fox and the Baron of Burrow's Bend

When a young mouse's father goes missing, she recruits the help of an ex-detective.

This was my graduation film from Calarts in 2018. I've been picking away at it here and there since, but it's been a year since it was originally supposed to be posted, so here it is!

Huge shout out to my amazing and hardworking composer Karen Tanaka & sound designer Paul Michael Cardon, and thank you to all my friends who supported me along the way!

I allowed myself to be as indulgent as possible with this film, and struggled a lot but had a lot of fun, and I still care very much about these characters & their world. Please enjoy!!

The Online Speech Wars

In theory, individuals should have the same rights online as they do in the physical world. But in practice, this is uncharted legal territory. Perhaps the most contentious area is free-speech law.

“Your First Amendment rights exist in a digital space, just as much as they exist in the real world,” says Lata Nott, the executive director of the First Amendment Center of the Freedom Forum Institute, in a new animated video. Nott goes on to explain how a group of Twitter users who were blocked by President Donald Trump’s official Twitter account took this idea to the courts—and won.

This video is part of The Speech Wars, a project of The Atlantic, and is supported by the Charles Koch Foundation, the Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press, and the Fetzer Institute.

Elastic Recurrence

From all directions gravity pulls on the shards of a breaking dinner plate. While the pieces of the plate expand into space, elastic strings try to draw them back together. A self-replicating cycle of falling and retracting follows from the dead center position of each piece. Even though this expansion of matter appears to be never ending, the new connections seem to unify all the fragments into a recollection of the initial form.

A cam-girl questions who is watching her beyond the camera - NOWNESS

“Women have a unique hyperawareness of their physical selves as objects,” explains Samantha Severin, the director exploring salacious voyeurism in this short film. “We’re constantly on display—sometimes we feel like prey.”

The New York-based filmmaker describes her directorial debut as the “surreal fever dream” of a webcam model who fears she is being watched offline as well as online. The blue glow of her digital display seemingly creates a sense of anonymous intimacy between herself and the clients she seduces. But over time, the line between being observed and devoured grows thinner. “Men consume her in both private and public spaces,” says Severin. “When she is safe behind a camera she has the control and enjoys being on display. Outside of that, the attention can be terrifying.”

Severin also uses the idea of the male gaze to question the ubiquity of personal content on digital platforms. She describes “camming” as “symbolic of a cultural moment where we provide windows into our private worlds.” Blue not only questions whether society has made “cam-girls” of us all, but also encourages us to wonder who is staring back.

CASTELLS

A film by
Pedro and James

Castells is a film that looks into the art of human towers in Catalonia. It explores the characters and the communities that are part of this beautiful and mesmerising tradition.

Castells are seemingly a simple activity; people climb on top of each other to create the highest tower. However, under the surface they are a metaphor to how communities interact, everyone playing a role, sacrificing oneself for a greater common objective. They illustrate how being part of society is about participation and interaction.

Baloji - ZOMBIES (Official Short film)

Baloji - ZOMBIES (Official Short film)

The film "Zombie" is a journey between hope and dystopia in a hallucinated Kinhsasa, from the culture of the hair salon to futuristic solitary clubbing, from the urban parade to the glory of a dictator in campaign (Papa Bollo) to modern western in the Takeshi Kitano style. In parallel, the film is based on the almost carnal relationship we have with our phones. The device becoming like an outgrowth of the hand and giving us the talent of digital ubiquity...

The Pilgrimage – Travel with a Purpose

My friend Neo felt there were events in his previous life that were unsettled. To make up with his past life Neo needed to go to Varanasi in India to meet a holy guru by the 9th of March. I was invited to come along to tell his story. A journey that turned out to be both thrilling and fascinating.

”I knew I had to go to Varanasi to meet this guru. But I did not have a clue who he was or where he were. All I knew was that Varanasi is the place where life and death meets – a furious melting pot on the eastern riverbank of the mighty river Ganges. I knew that the forces of Shiva, the god of creativity and destruction, are especially strong there. What did Shiva have in plan for me?”

The journey triggered more fundamental and existential contemplations in both of us. What is the nature of real experiences? What is reality? What is truth?

The Pilgrimage was shot in 8 intense days in Rishikesh, Varanasi and Chennai in March 2015.

Phoolon Wali Holi

Since witnessing the insane celebrations of Holi inside Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan, I knew that these celebrations deserved their own little film. Hours before the temple doors open, thousands upon thousands of devotees gather to take part in the 20 minute flower and colour throwing celebration of Phoolon Wali Holi. As the doors open, an unstoppable surge begins as the crowd funnels inside and the chanting and applause becomes thunderous. Many people carry offerings which they will bring to the front of the temple to devote to the deities, others pray as they enter through stone archways. For me, however, the most intense part comes when the entire temple unites in raising their hands, and yelling in unison as colours and flowers surround them.

"I was there the other day. So weird wandering thru those deserted ripped-off structures that so much love & agony & labor went into building. There were ghosts behind every broken window & half-off-the-hinges door. Sad hippy ghost town with a pile of human shit deposited on the drainboard next to the sink. AKHADA

Dawn, Varanasi. As the people of the city begin their day washing in the Ganges, the men from around Tulsi Ghat begin their own morning ritual, centuries in the making, in the fitness ground known as an Akhada.

It is believed that this particular Akhada has been a place of fitness and worship for almost 500 years. Men till the soil by hand, before offering a prayer to the Lord Rama and partaking in an incense burning ceremony. The Akhada is predominantly a place to maintain fitness and stamina, and the men begin their workouts by lifting weights, jogging, and performing pushups.

Then, they begin to drag themselves through the soil of the wrestling ring, throwing dirt over themselves to cover their already-oiled skin and provide some friction during the upcoming rounds of wrestling known as kushti or pehlwani.

This cultural peculiarity is unfortunately becoming less popular, with numbers of Akhada dwindling from well over 50 across the city several decades ago, to now barely a dozen hidden throughout the streets and ghats of Varanasi.

I loved stepping through the small stone archway into the Tulsi Akhada. The rituals performed here beautifully showcase a sport and a tradition which has lasted centuries. With this short film, I wanted to capture that tradition by telling the story of the men, the Pehlwans, who live and breathe it as part of their morning routine.
