I think I love you

This is my final film at Calarts. It's about different ways of love. We all love people and are loved by others in various personal ways. Maybe we like it or maybe we don't like it. But love is a whole thing, we are only pieces. It's about suffering, growth and change. After embracing all, you'll find it a beautiful peaceful thing.

Mark Lotterman - Happy (official video directed by Alice Saey)

As a metaphor for the search of the meaning of the word “happy”, an immense group of geese dances desperately in synchronized choreography. Starting out as an undefined organism, and slowly zooming out as the song proceeds, the geese turn out to be part of different cults. Each cult portraying an emotion that cannot be withheld individually, but that’s all the more shown in the meticulous urge for group behavior. A video about the search for ones own identity through seemingly virtuous self-expression on the one side and the undeniable drowning into the masses on the other.

See / Saw

Chock full of outraged aliens, wild dogs, Instagram malaise, and the private pursuits of the artist, See / Saw explores the relationship between image, text, and sound. Animators Case Jernigan and Erik Winkowski trade short stories, stringing together a flurry of imagery and messages. The two artists craft animation from paper, stop-motion, and drawing. Music producer Josh Giunta (Love Science Music) paces through an array of musical colors with his rhythmic and lush sound design. See / Saw springs from the necessary dialogue between artists of different mediums.

GALAXIES Vol. 1 - 4K (UHD)

You are lying on a blanket on a clear summer night and gazing at the dark starry sky. You are trying to spot the big dipper, Andromeda, or maybe Orion. However you are noticing strange bright patches aligned in a band across the night sky and realize they are not stars: it is our home town, our own galaxy, the milky way. That’s how all star-gazing experiences, hobbies, but also the history of astronomy began: from naked eye observations thousands of years ago, to the finest and biggest telescopes today, capable of unravelling the most intriguing secrets of the universe. As the hobby or science grows and evolves, we always want to go deeper and zoom in. You are now seeing not only our galaxy, but billions of them!

With the first opus of the short film series ‘Galaxies’, I wanted to experiment and take the astro-timelapse technique to the next level. There are a lot of sumptuous short films and very technical time-lapses featuring the milky way, but I found very little variation in this field. Most of the time they show a wide-angle view of the milky way, albeit majestic, rising or setting against various foregrounds. This is the reason why I wanted to rethink the whole process, find different angles, get more detail. Why not zoom in? Why not consider other deep-sky objects like other galaxies? Why not show our very space home address and neighborhood in a very different way?

I started thinking about making time-lapse of deep-sky objects about three years ago when I bought my tracker. I would experiment and track the Andromeda galaxy moving in front of rocks, monuments, trees, behind northern lights. I extended the limits of wide-field astro-timelapse (10-35mm) to a more middle (50-85mm) and narrow-field (> 85mm). It gives a lot of new options and reveals the true beauty and detail of our galactic core fore example.

The main canvas of the project is based on our galaxy and their neighbors (Andromeda, the Magellanic clouds..), but also a lot more deep-sky objects like nebulas, star clusters etc… Amateurs and professionals will certainly recognize a multitude of them like the North-American nebula, the Orion nebula, the Rosette nebula, the Carina nebula, the dark horse nebula, the Andromeda galaxy in different situations like photobombed by northern lights or moving behind the tree canopy, the majestic milky way core either rising or in very fine detail moving fleeting gently across the nigh sky… You will still find some wide-angle milky way scenes, because you just cannot pass on them!

My two favorite parts of the project (and the most technically difficult) were shooting the Andromeda galaxy in the aurorae for one, and shooting a scene of the Orion constellation along with its nebulae, including nature and the zodiacal lights for the other. The former was hard to realize because of my location at the time of shoot (Denmark) since we don’t get aurorae too often. I needed to find a calm night (no wind for tracking), with an aurora storm but not too bright either (so one can still see the detail in the galaxy). It also needs to be at that time year when Andromeda passes low on the horizon, coinciding with the space where northern lights would appear. It was the most technical time-lapse I have ever done so far, but the most rewarding! The latter was also difficult, but paid off incredibly well. My goal was to get the red of the emission nebulae in the region of Orion that would still be visible in single pictures of the time-lapse, since you cannot stack and bring out detail! I astro-modified my Canon 6D to get the shot, and included the beautiful zodiacal lights towards the west, and even got a surprise visitor (grey heron) if you can spot it!

I shot a various locations to get a variety of shots: Denmark (northern light, Andromeda, some milky way), Malawi (Milky way core and nebulas), France (star trails), Tenerife (Milky way core and wide-field), Vermont (wide field milky way) and Slovenia (milky way). Since I basically started this project a few years back when I began with astrophotography, some scenes still contain annoying flickering or weren’t as sharp as the ones I get now, but all in all I am truly amazed by the result and I really hope you can appreciate this new view on astro time-lapse. I should mention that this kind of technique demands a lot of work on thinking, preparing, executing and post-processing, and it took me about two years to achieve it.

Material:
Canon 6D (Baader modded), Sony a7rII, Sony a7s
Multiple lenses ranging from 10mm to 500mm
iOptron Skyguider tracker
Pre-processed in Lr and post-processed in Final Cut Pro X

You can find more information about the film at adphotography-online.com. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed the marvels of galaxies as much as I did. Don’t hesitate to like, comment, share and of course follow me for more 4K videos!

SMELLY SOCKS I 3.1

Smelly Socks 3.1 is, unrotunately, the one and only Smelly Socks webisode this year. Simply for two reasons: We have zero budget for this and Daniel hurt his knee. But this doesen´t mean Smelly Socks are done! We tried hard and made at least one this year. And we will try even harder to bring you more Smelly Socks edits in upcoming season, so don´t be sad and stay tunned!

This particular time for 3.1, we visited Absolut park Flachauwinkl in Austria. Daniel, Antti and Martin drove with Dan´s sketchy 1998 VW Golf literally overloaded with all kinds of classic shit like bags, skis, filming equipment...But also pretty gross shit, like a mixture of candies and leftover snacks on the floor, which at some point, mixed with melted snow, became some sort of nasty „candysauce“ as we called it, while Martin was constantly complaining about Daniel driving too fast and too furious. We drove about 6 hours from Czech Republic to Flachau where we all stayed at Matthias Krallinger´s amazing house in the middle of the mountain – he even has his own miniramp in a basement, where we had nice afternoon sessions after skiing with beers and a good music.

Overally we had 4 days to film the edit. But as it usually is the weather didn´t really cooperate, so we had 1 day off and stayed home. That left us 3 days to work with. Unlike the bummer day at home, those other days luckily worked out perfectly for us! We had 2 days of sun that we used in a park and even one deep powder day! Where Daniel and Antti tried to be like The Big Picture guys and hit cliffs and stuff on their centermounted park skis, doin countless tomahawks, calling it the best day at work ever pretty much after each hit. At this point we were also joined by everyones favourite Zuzička Stromkova, and she was sending the cliffs with dem boyz like there´s no tomorrow leaving Daniel and Antti speechless! Daniel dropped his first cliff ever in his life and Antti was killing it as usually on his 1.0s - for example his massive nosebudda dub 10 out off totally fucking nowhere speaks for itself. The rest of it you´ll see in the webisode. So sit comfy, blast your volume and enjoy the rock´n´roll!

We would like to thank:

You as an audience – without you, we wouldn´t be able to make these.

Matthias Krallinger and his family for letting the smelly crew stay at his place.

Berndt Egger – Absolut Park manager

Martin Bernard for doin this because of his passion.

The crew for amazing experience and everyone else we´ve met and skied with!

Surviving Kensington :: behind the photos of 'Kensington Blues'

What used to be a proud blue-collar neighborhood in Philadelphia is now a deteriorating haven for drugs, crime, and prostitution. Kensington is famous for the place to get your fix; and for the place you end up stuck when you’ve let your vices get the best of you.

For the last five years, Philly-based photographer Jeffrey Stockbridge has been taking intimate portraits of current residents (‘survivors’) in Kensington. But the stories he finds here aren't just about Philly: Jeffrey's photographs and raw interviews show a side of the desperation, hopelessness, and broken dreams that plague America's addicts across the country.

Through a walk with Jeff on the Avenue, we get a glimpse of what it's like to survive on Kensington.

The film tells the true story of 400 fish that were found in a high school pool in Saitama, Japan, and the four fifteen-year-old girls who put them there. Explosions in the Sky - The Ecstatics (Official Video)

Stop-Motion Animated music video for Explosions in the Sky. Everything was shot in camera using paper, projections and translucent materials like plastic and glass. The band's brief was to create something inspired by "wilderness of the mind." I thought of the beautiful chaos that is in the mind space and how that space has a multitude of transitions, whether it’s a transition from life to death or going from unknowing to knowing.

【360° Movie】Tokyo Light Odyssey (Full)

About the Work
From the lights of skyscrapers and homes, to the neon street lights and headlamps of cars and trains in motion… fragments of the city float like stardust out of the darkness against the curtain of the night sky. This new vision of Tokyo is explored with omnidirectional motion graphics.

This work was born from ‘Beyond Motion Graphics’ ( http://ift.tt/2defXgz ) an internal company project at WOW aimed at exploring new possibilities for motion graphics. In using VR technology, consideration was given as to what kind of images to showcase and express as pieces of art.

Perfectly Normal

I was introduced to Jordan, the effervescent subject of this Op-Doc, by a mutual friend; we met for lunch at his favorite deli in Los Angeles, where we live. That day, we waded through a getting-to-know-you conversation that somehow felt both more awkward and less awkward than most of its kind. Jordan has Asperger’s syndrome, and so he often gets pulled into his own world, one that can seem chaotic and isolated from ours. But he has learned to make deliberate choices to stay present in reality.

I found myself pleasantly surprised by the quick-witted middle-aged man having lunch across from me. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of music and movies, and a strikingly clever sense of humor. So I was intrigued. The lunch became the first of many meetings we shared over the course of many months, before we started filming this Op-Doc more than a year later.

Autism and Asperger’s syndrome, which is often considered a high-functioning form of autism, can manifest through a wide spectrum of symptoms; the severity and range of consequences vary depending on the individual. Sometimes these symptoms are barely noticeable, but on the other hand, around 40 percent of autistic children do not speak. (Symptoms often lessen by adulthood.)

In Jordan’s case, he lives independently, holds a job, and manages his own personal finances. He has a relationship with a woman named Toni who has multiple disabilities herself. But more importantly, he is self-aware, self-accepting, caring, with a strong ability to analyze and speak about his condition with others. He understands how he is different, and he has created a coping mechanism for himself that enables him to function in society and pursue his interests in the arts as an escape when it all becomes too much for him. It is these qualities that I wanted to emphasize in this film. I wanted Jordan himself to tell us his story instead of it being formulated out of impressions from the perspective of an outsider. A strong self-advocate, Jordan argues that he is not a disabled person, but merely a person with a disability. Someone from whom those he calls “normal people” could learn. Besides, he will argue, “everybody is not completely normal” anyway.

So much more research and support is needed to enable people with autism. There are no limits to what beautiful minds like Jordan’s can help us make of this world.
