Admissions of an Amateur Bikepacker

Ben, from Johnson Studios, had the “brilliant” idea of bikepacking and self-filming a solo adventure in the Andes of Peru. He had zero bikepacking experience. He figured his biking and backpacking knowledge would simply become one making the journey a breeze! How hard could it be?? This short film is an attempt at an honest documentation of the victories and struggles of a solo first time bikepack through a hi-altitude far off world.

To dive deeper, including how we filmed this project, check out our in-depth interview with bikepacking.com, check it out here: bikepacking.com/plog/admissions-amateur-bikepacker-film/

WEVAL - SOMEDAY

instagram.com/paraicmcgloughlin/

Taken from Weval's second album "The Weight".

kompaktrecords.lnk.to/TheWeightAR

Last year Weval approached me with the idea of developing a music video for 'Someday'. Upon listening to the track ,which I loved, I had ideas of what I thought would fit. After some discussions with the guys we came up with a loose structure.

We aimed at creating an abstract journey with a sense of ambiguity holding underlying core concepts:

Where are we going, are we going in the right direction?

Our situation on earth is fragile, as individuals, as a people and the planet itself is delicate

Nothing is certain; life can change dramatically for better or for worse in an instant. We may fear losing what we have but we try to hold on.

Big thanks to Weval, super happy to put images behind their amazing sounds!

The Loser

The most horribly failed interview ever attempted. A meeting of the great minds David Shields, Bret Easton Ellis and some loser.

David Shields is the internationally bestselling author of twenty-two books, including Reality Hunger and The Thing About Life Is That One Day You’ll Be Dead.

Bret Easton Ellis is the bestselling author of Less Than Zero, The Rules of Attraction, American Psycho, and most recently White.

Kristoffer Borgli is a remarkable nobody, who is, like many these days, trying to find his footing in mediums in which he might not belong.

One Breath Around The World

*** ONE BREATH AROUND THE WORLD ***

NEW FILM: Our new short film (12 min) is finally out. Turn out the light, put your headphones and freedive with me around the world

This great adventure was possible thanks to the support of a great team
* Julie Gautier, my wife. One more time she did an AMAZING work. Everything she is shooting with her camera become magic. Of course, she shot as usual all the images on breath hold!
* Almo Film and his boss Morgan Le Faucheur for his support as co producer of the project during the post production process.
* Ben Nardini, the multi task guy: Editing, Sound design and drone pilot!
* Guillaume Ferran, the magician behind the original soundtrack
* Arthur Paux, as usual, who made the beautiful color correction
* Leonard Mercier added a great touch with the compositing and stabilization
* Xavier Fulbert / Ideocast made the sound mix
* Franck Seguin the fantastic photographer who made a book edited by Glenat #apleinsouffle

Of course, nothing would be possible without the safety and logistic support from our friends / freedivers around the world: Wilfried Souza, Nico, Dolswim, Julien Borde, Pranamaya Freediving, Rodrigo Salsas, Louis Pasquer, Suzanne Lim, Luke Schroeder, Catalin Craciun, Freediving Coron, Carlo Navarro, MJ Paula, Odessa Bugarin, Ryuzo Shinomiya, Tomoka Tsukakoshi, Kikachiro and Shotaro Maja, Denis Grosmaire, Moorea freediving, Sane Richmond, Tetamanu Village et Diving, Patea Alexandre, Tevai Malinowski, Monique Daudon, Antero Joki, Maria Hellinger, Kiki Bosch

Restless by Stephen Locke; Thunderstorm Stock Footage

Supercell thunderstorm time lapse cinematography stock footage by Stephen Locke.
Welcome to Meteorological Spring!
The Meteorology community regards March 1st as the first day of Spring, AKA Meteorological Spring. The atmosphere begins to warm and becomes restless as do plants, animals and storm chasers. We've all grown weary of the stasis imposed by Winter. With pent-up energy, we are antsy and eager to experience the eruption of Spring storms.
In this concupiscent spirit, I made the movie Restless. I mixed and arranged the musical score to express the atmosphere's fitful march forward, always reorganizing, forever dynamic, never unchanging. I combined the soundtrack with time-lapse footage to convey impatience and power.
As a storm chaser, I feel a kinship with the atmosphere. The arrow of time and entropy compels us forward. We perpetually seek next, next, next. We are forever Restless.

Patagonia 'Mirador del Sur'

[Viewpoint of the South]

Part-Chilean, part-Argentinian - the territory has no official geographical boundaries; a land defined by stories, antiquated maps & historical discoveries of new lands.

Dreaming of crossing Patagonia overland, our adventure took us by foot - hiking Torres del Paine, renting 4x4’s, overnight buses & ferries through the fjords, the Southern-most commuter train in South America & a guy we paid $200 to drive us 8hrs across the border on gravel roads when there were no other means.

5 weeks & almost 3000 miles, across Patagonia.

Nusantara - Bali, Lombok and Flores

Indonesia is a massive country, so much so that I have created at least 3 travel videos about the country and I have yet to step foot on Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and a few thousands more. It’s amazing how I diverse the country is and how they are so unique from one another. There is so much to see in Indonesia and here is my attempt at showing another part of Indonesia I have not done before.

Today, I will take you to Bali, Lombok, Flores and explore the unique culture, breathtaking landscapes, the wonderful people of Nusa Tenggara.

Nusantara (means Archipelago in Bahasa), a collection of travel moments I captured during my 2 weeks trip through Bali, Lombok, and Flores. Bali and Lombok are pretty well-traveled but what blew me away was how beautiful Flores is. The number of wildlife you can encounter there is astounding.

What do you know about Flores? You may know about the Komodo Dragons and the islands they live on but there isn’t as many videos of Flores, the island where you actually have to go to see the Komodo Dragons.

For my trip, I had a chance to spend 10 days on Flores, starting from Labuan Bajo. I got on a boat and spent the first 2 days cruising around the Komodo National Park, visiting the Komodo Island, Rinca island, where you can actually see more Komodo dragons than the one it is named after, and Padar island, the best sunrise spot you can see.

During the live-aboard experience, all of us on the boat had a chance to bond, while exploring and learning about the Komodo dragons. In between, we went snorkeling and swam with Manta Ray, my first time ever, see them in its habitat. There are a ton of things to do around the Komodo National Park, especially if you are into diving and snorkeling.

After 2 days exploring the Komodo Islands, I flew inland into Ende, a town on the eastern part of Flores and traveled on land back west to see what Flores has to offer other than the Komodo Islands.

As it turned out, Flores is so much more than what it is known for. Throughout my 10 days in Flores, I went up to Kelimutu, a tri-colored volcanic lake in Moni, explored Bena traditional village in Bajawa and spent the rest of my time, riding a scooter around Ruteng and hung out with the enthusiastic locals of Flores.

So watch Nusantara, a travel video of my experience traveling around Bali, Lombok, and Flores, and enjoy the beautiful islands of Indonesia together!

I hope you enjoy the video and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me in the comments below.

I have written a ton of articles about Indonesia including the itinerary I took on this trip so if you are interested, be sure to check these out:

The Rite - NOWNESS

Celebrate the 106th anniversary of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring with a group of dancers with Down’s Syndrome who have captured the revolutionary spirit of the riot-inciting ballet.

Under the creative mentorship of The Royal Ballet, Culture Device—an innovative dance theater for artists with Down’s Syndrome—completed a residency at the Royal Opera House with a powerful reinterpretation of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. To mark 106 years since the ballet’s premiere, filmmaker Adam Csoka Keller captures Culture Device’s industry-defining production for NOWNESS.

“The Rite of Spring absolutely broke all the rules in composition and choreography, marking an important cultural moment in history,” says Keller. “It’s crucial to be at the forefront of the cultural moment, and this film shows how the art world is opening up to performers with learning disabilities.”

Modern audiences may consider this ballet one of Stravinsky’s greatest works, but its premiere caused the audience at the time to riot. The score defied common compositional structures and the choreography was described as primitive and jerky—movements that belied the usual ethereal, weightless quality of ballet.

In the spirit of the original 1913 performance, the film The Rite also breaks the rules by liberalizing dance and challenging audience perceptions about who is ‘allowed’ to perform. “There are many misconceptions about people with learning disabilities. When working on projects like this that have a special energy, your view on certain topics will never be the same again,” says Keller. “The truth is that we need to employ more of these incredibly talented performers, not only within arts and culture but other disciplines where they can make a positive change.”

The Melody of Hue, Vietnam

We spent 4 days in Hue, a beautiful place in the middle of Vietnam. People say it's quite dull here and nothing much to entertain, but we felt differently, and this video is the way to change that opinion. Hue is such a unique song with a high and low melody. From the soothing sound of a sunrise on the river, the laughing of people in morning markets, the beautiful traditional Hue tune, to the bustling street at night...

A Thousand Casts

Winner of the 2019 Vimeo Staff Pick Award at Mountainfilm in Telluride, CO.

Directed by Ben Knight and Travis Rummel

Fisherman Oliver White’s life reads like a storybook. Hand-plucked to work for a high-power financial firm while he was a fishing guide, he went on to pursue a dream in the Bahamas, narrowly escape death and build a nonprofit [indifly.org] that takes him around the world using fly fishing to help indigenous communities protect water. A Thousand Casts follows this philosopher and outdoorsman to the Kingdom of Bhutan, where the royal family has invited him to find a mythical fish on the brink of extinction. Does Oliver have "a golden horseshoe up his ass," or does he possess a depth of character that’s rare in today’s world? The answer reveals itself with each cast.

The Dreamers: Katia and Marielle Labéque - NOWNESS

The internationally renowned piano sensations unveil how imagination drives ambition in the first episode of a new series in partnership with Burberry
The Dreamers profiles women who have imagined their careers into being, usually in opposition to the cultural zeitgeist. In this three part series, intrepid creatives explain how, by either taking the road less travelled or carving out entirely new paths for themselves, their outward success has transpired from inward imagining.

Katia and Marielle Labèque are a French piano duo who, since childhood, have been driven to enliven musical compositions written for four hands. The Bayonne-born sisters have dedicated their careers to returning piano duets to international concert halls—proving that modern audiences still have an appetite for this prestigious artform.

The sibling pianists are not only highly regarded for bringing new life to classical music, but also for their synchronicity and explosive concerts. For this project, London-based director Fiona Jane Burgess captures one of their original compositions. The sonorous sound that fills the room suggests that their intuitive performance is connected to the strength of their bond.

After playing side-by-side for 40 years, the Labèque sisters have a record label to their name and a career that has taken them from New York’s Carnegie Hall to the BBC Proms. “I like taking risks and seeking out new horizons,” says Katia. The sisters’ unique vision has led to collaborations with world-class contemporary composers such as minimalist maestro Philip Glass and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke.

Based on the interdependent strength of the Labèques’ performances, audiences can see the most impressive partnership is the one that exists between the sisters. “All these years together have allowed us to get to know each other by heart,” says Marielle. “We have very little visual contact when performing, but we breathe in unison.”

In Residence: Pedro Reyes & Carla Fernández - NOWNESS

The Mexico City home of artist Pedro Reyes and fashion designer Carla Fernández is a continually adapting architectural project. Only built in the 1980s, none of the original structure remains. Coarse concrete walls divide the sprawling space into discrete sections that, over the years, has evolved to meet both the demands of a working atelier and comfort of a family home.

The daunting brutalism of the space is offset by Fernández’s vibrant textiles and Reyes’ sculptural work. A larger than life-sized sculpture of Vladimir Lenin’s head lies in repose, a wooden “hand chair” with articulating fingers sits in the corner, and shovels cast from melted down weapons hang on a wall. Moving from the handmade to the natural, the master bathroom resembles an ancient geological site with its carved volcanic stone basin and roughly-hewn rockpool bathtub. Around the home lightwells of brilliant yellow interrupts the grey of the concrete, while large green cacti and palms beckon a sense of the outdoors.

Their Coyoacán home is more than just a living space but a reflection of their commitment to working with the community. Most of the cement work was completed in-house with local craftspeople and the workshop is continually awash with neighborhood artisans working on Reyes’ new projects.

Reyes’ opus extends far beyond material arts and sculpture work. Most notably his People’s United Nations project (stylized as “pUN”) invited 193 volunteers to find resolutions to real and imagined geopolitical issues using psychology and theatre. Meanwhile Fernández’s eponymous fashion label works alongside indigenous communities in order to promote traditional weaving techniques and patterns for global audiences. For these efforts in 2018 both Fernández and Reyes were awarded the Design Miami Visionary Award which recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the field of design and had a tangible impact on their communities. The couple’s work, just like their cavernous home, continues to be a testament to the rewards of local collaboration and celebration of Mexico’s rich heritage.

Lyrics:

The blinding lights, the city lights
spread across the skyline
speaks to me to call me home

Another voice, another song
I feel it push me further
breathe me in and go to work

Cant stop, can’t walk, can’t think straight
count sheep, my mind up so late,
its talks so loud won’t let me sleep

Cant breathe, can’t see, can’t sit right
keep chasing all these tail lights
run round till nothing’s left to see

I, I, I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life
I, I, I can’t help myself from feeling so alive

I see it all, I see it now
If I could go no further
would I find peace in this somehow

Another night, another day
is this just what it feel like
excuses rise and fall away

With you, I fly, so high now
I know this place, this come down
been blind to all the ways I’ve been

Ride hard, ride free, just go though
keep me from falling into
another life of solitude

I, I, I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life
I, I, I can’t help myself from feeling so alive

The blinding lights, the city lights
spread across the skyline
speaks to me to call me home.

Spirit Bears of the Great Bear Rainforest

Speechless - Episode 10:

In this episode I spend time with two Spirit Bears, as they fish for salmon on a river deep in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest.

In Gitga'at mythology, the creator, the Raven, asked the Black Bear to turn one in every ten cubs white to serve as a reminder of when the world was covered in ice.

At the end of this short film, a Spirit Bear steps into a single ray of light that evades the dense canopy overhead. The bear's white fur catches the light, illuminating the bear in an otherwise dark setting, and depicts the name given to the white bear by the local Gitga'at First Nation - Moksgm'ol (Ghost Bear).

Filmed by Richard Sidey with invitation from the Gitga'at First Nation.

Thoroughbred

Thoroughbred is a film about the isolating pursuit of perfection. The daily battle waged between ambition and anxiety.

feat. Ivan Moshchuk

Poem:
Here again, seated with a gnawing feeling of dissatisfaction.
The ache in my stomach, the push at my back, always constant.
Forward.
Driven by that ambiguous spark.
I question its origin, its impetus.
Burning, my envy rages against those so easily satisfied.
To know that peace would be bliss.
Yet were it offered, I know I would decline.
For as much as I disdain its presence, I invite its consistency.
Always more, always next.
For now, that great fear, the gap between my accomplishments and its expectations, subsides for the day.
I’ve earned this calm, this freedom.
But it is fleeting.
For tomorrow, we start again.

REVIEW

One of the best and most interesting movie experiences of the year. – Einar Aarvig, film critic

The film is both poetic, realistic, unpretentious and current. The film language, the sound design and the acting are liberating. – Christin Berg, head of programming Nordisk Film Kino

An exciting movie: Challenging, atmospheric, thought provoking, uncomfortable and surprising. And the actors play very well. – Svend Jensen, head of Arthaus

BERGEN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2017
Best Norwegian Short Film: NO MAN IS AN ISLAND

Statement:
The winner is a brave and ambitious film that doesn’t shy away from big existential and political questions. Made in different modes, sometimes in a manner that can even be pretentious, it manages to land its many ideas elegantly, winning the audience with an authentic, humorous
and spontaneous approach. A surprisingly fresh film about friendship, belonging and prejudice, and an impressively confident start for its filmmaker. Jury BIFF: Aleksander Huser, Einar Aarvig, Henning Rosenlund

MINIMALEN 2018
Best Norwegian Short Film: NO MAN IS AN ISLAND

Statement:
The jury was impressed with the visually beautiful scenes, the sound design, acting and poetry in this film. This poetry is juxtaposed with an encounter with the rough reality of racism hidden behind a message
of tolerance which makes the glass ceiling even more hurtful for the protagonists of the film.
