Pear

I came up with the whole story by listening to a foreign radio fm in which a narrator told a story about in a language I didn't understand. Whilst listening to the piece bit by bit, I was able to feel the atmosphere, I somehow understood what it was about and wanted to translate it to myself.

The whole script was created directly whilst listening to the radio. I can't go back to find out what the radio story truly was about, but to me, the story I have created and the radio piece symbolize the same mood.

It has been a very personal experience in which I have captured this moment in time and to give that experience an ending.

This is my graduation film in the Royal College of Art, 2015

Letters from the Gods

This film was shot between June and September 2016, after the Kumamoto earthquake.

Japan has a long history of Buddhism and religious Mythology, where many have derived from other Asian cultures. One popular belief is that there is a God in everything. Until the 20th century, Kyushu was seen as Japan's gate to the world and a centre for trade. It has historically been the first stop for foreign traders and travelers in Japan and a place from which the outside influences would spread to the rest of the country. Time has moved on, but the landscapes and legends remain to this day.

The Kumamoto earthquake has caused serious damage to the region. Many people have suffered physical and mental injuries and tourism has fallen drastically. The aim of this film is to disseminate the new appeal of the Kyushu region from a different perspective and to lift those affected by the earthquake.

With this, we invite you to come on a journey with us to discover the real Kyushu where Gods, myths, and legends were created.

Urbanique Chicago - Time Lapse

Urban landscape and Unique architecture create this amazing city. This time lapse journey throughout Chicago took over 8 months to shoot and collect clips. The whole project required a lot of sacrifice and time. My goal was to capture some of the cities well known events like ST. Patrick's Day "river dyeing green", Air and Water Show, Navy Pier fireworks, Bridge lift and boat run, sunrise under the "Cloud Gate", three times full moon during summer time, new ferries wheel, NHL Draft Town etc. There is much more going on in the city and it's impossible for me to capture all, but that is a beauty of it. Thankfully I was able to discover some nice places with beautiful views of the cities skyline thanks to very nice people working in all locations I had plans to take pictures from.
Down the road someone asked me if I'm not scared to shoot pictures at night. Now I can say it was a little scary in some places, but overall Windy City is surrounded by helpful and kind people so, I did not run in to any problems. The biggest challenge wasn't freezing weather, snow, rain or super hot summer. Managing time between family and full time job is hard task and sometimes I feel like I loose something. The journey has not been easy but the sacrifice paid off and I'm very proud of the final outcome.
Another big thing always is to find right music. With so many websites to go through and all kinds of music I finally chose this fast and refreshing sound by Top_Red_Music "Orchestra". Licensed through Envato Market.
I shot over 250 clips for this project with over 65K stills and number of hours post-processing. Welcomed in many places, kicked out from one:), after few parking tickets, countless parking fees, miles on the foot with heavy bag I finally introduce you to URBANIQUE CHICAGO.
Chicago is very welcoming city and I would like to send a special thanks to Sheraton Chicago, London House Chicago, Continental Hotel Chicago, Holiday Inn Chicago, Very nice lady at the top of Hard Rock Hotel Chicago, Wyndham Chicago and many, many more.

Alive

We traveled three weeks through the northern Himalayas of India, from Himachal Pradesh to Kashmir. It was a journey from valleys to peaks up to 5000m. We experienced a massive amount of different cultures, three major religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, met incredible people, saw never seen before nature and walked right next to the wildest animals. It´s nearly impossible to recreate this experience and our feelings and to compress it to just 3 minutes. So I tried to express the spirit of our journey. What we felt more than anything else, is to be alive.

SPLIT TICKET

In 1947, newly-minted congressmen and future presidents John F. Kennedy, age 29, and Richard Nixon, age 34, travel to Pennsylvania where they must make a fateful decision. A supernatural drama based on true events.

SPLIT TICKET is the winner of the Director's Award Grand Prize at the 2016 Rhode Island International Film Festival, Best Fantasy Film at the 2016 Dragon Con in Atlanta – the largest multi-media, popular culture convention in the world, and Best Dramatic Short at the 2016 Adirondack Film Festival in Glens Falls, New York, among others. The film is a 2016 Official Selection of the 32nd Boston Film Festival sponsored by NBC Universal, A&E Networks and The Hollywood Reporter, LA Shorts Fest, Cleveland International Film Festival, DC Shorts, Napa Valley Film Festival, New Hampshire Film Festival, Orlando Film Festival, Knoxville Film Festival, and ITVFest sponsored by HBO, CBS and the Writers Guild of America East.

Take magazine article about SPLIT TICKET:
http://ift.tt/2fIp8Ho

Writer/Director Statement: "I was intrigued by a historical incident recounted in Chris Matthews' book 'Kennedy and Nixon: The Rivalry That Shaped Postwar America' in a chapter called 'Strangers On A Train.' In April of 1947, just three months after being sworn in as freshman congressmen, future presidents John F. Kennedy, age 29, and Richard M. Nixon, age 34, took a trip together to McKeesport, Pennsylvania, where they debated an upcoming labor bill before a civic group of 150 people. Afterward, the two friends went to a diner for hamburgers and then shared a sleeping compartment on the Capitol Limited overnight train back to Washington. They drew straws for the lower bunk, which Nixon won. I thought that fascinating true event would make a exciting jumping-off point for a Twilight Zone-ish story about two American icons. Our short film, SPLIT TICKET, is the result." – Alfred Thomas Catalfo • catalfo.com

Asia OnTheWay (Teaser)

During the Polish People’s Republic time (1950s to late 1980s), Fiat 126p was the most popular car in the country. It served as a family automobile, even though there was no more room left for baggage after a family of four got in. Questionable driving comfort and high failure frequency is all you need to know about The Maluch (its nickname literally means “the little one”, or “the little guy”, and is a commonly recognized cultural icon in Poland).

Some people have a certain fondness for it, though. One of them being Arkady Paweł Fiedler, the grandson of a well-known Polish writer and adventurer Arkady Fiedler.

Arkady wants to keep the family tradition going, and despite all odds, take the car on a spin around the world. Will the Maluch make it? This question remains to be answered. So far, the Fiat 126p has been doing pretty well. It already crossed Poland in 2009 and Africa (!) in 2014.

When in late 2015 Arkady offered me to join a wild ride across Asia, I had to think about it first. This wasn’t an easy decision. We were scheduled to leave Poland in June 2016. The deadline seemed remote… I was supposed to leave my wife and a six-month old daughter for over 3 months? Well, we all got together and decided that this is a project we can’t pass on.

My job was to develop a documentary showing Arkady Fiedler’s ride across Asia. We ended up with 7TB of material, including more than 100 timelapses, and several hours of drone shots.

Asia OnTheWay is consists of over 3 months on the road. It’s a 14,000+ mi drive from Puszczykowo (Poland) to Vladivostok (Russia). The Fiat 126p burned 253 gallons of gas while crossing Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan (twice), Kyrgyzstan (twice), Tajikistan, Mongolia, and Russia (twice).

The Maluch climbed 15,272 ft AMSL twice (the Ak-Baital Pass, Tajikistan). Its longest single day run was 308 mi in Kazakhstan. The shortest was 27 mi on the last day of the trip, in Russia. During the journey, The Maluch caught flat tire once. Among the replaced parts were: the starter, inductor (twice), ignition module, carburetor, master cylinder, oil (5x), 7 air filters, and 5 fuel filters. On top of that, while we were still in Poland, two connecting rods had to be replaced as well, because of a knocking in the engine. Still, the knocking proved to be a faithful companion along the entire journey. Moreover, somewhere in Wachau valley, Arkady had to straighten a clamp under the gearbox, that got bent on a stone.

It’s sort of funny and shows the resilience of The Maluch, that it was not supposed to “live through” Pamir (Tajikistan), but travelled halfway across the globe instead.

This Asian adventure has taught me a lot. We’ve met so many incredible people along the way. Seen so many beautiful, surreal landscapes. It was a long and rough road. It was hot (102 F) and cold (23 F). It was fun and teaching. Most of all, it was absolutely amazing. The journey was a success thanks to the hard work put in by the entire Asia OnTheWay team: Arkady Fiedler, Kamil Piechowiak, Albert Wójtowicz, Kuba Kiub, Bartek Zborek. Words can’t express how much I’m grateful to you, guys!

Here’s the teaser for the “Asia OnTheWay” documentary.

HELL YOU TALMBOUT

Ten years ago, Melba Ayco founded Northwest Tap Connection, a social justice oriented dance studio intentionally placed in the most dangerous part of Seattle so that it could serve as a hub and refuge for youth in the area. In the wake of the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, the directors came across a Facebook Live video of the students of Northwest Tap dancing in the streets in protest.

With the support of the YoungArts Transformations film project, they traveled across the country with the hope that they could place the voice of Northwest Tap on a cinematic platform. The taps of their toes are like the walks and talks of those chained and silenced - but at the very same time, an embodiment of revelry and resilience. It's a cry to say their names, see their names and feel their names...and it's a declaration that the list of lives lost to police brutality ends today.

Co-Directed by DENZEL BOYD, TYLER RABINOWITZ and JOSEPH WEBB
Produced and Edited by TYLER RABINOWITZ

This Panda Is Dancing

A poetic short film by Max Stossel & Sander van Dijk:

In the Attention Economy, technology and media are designed to maximize our screen-time. But what if they were designed to help us live by our values? timewellspent.io

What if news & media companies were creating content that enriched our lives, vs. catering to our most base instincts for clicks?
What if social platforms were designed to help us create our ideal social lives, instead of to maximize time-on site and “likes”?
What if dating apps measured their success in how well they helped us find what we’re looking for instead of in # of swipes?

As technology gets more and more engaging, and as AI and VR become more and more prevalent in our day-to-day lives we need to take a look at how we’re structuring our future.

Locomotive of Morocco

Upon arriving in Morocco, I began what seemed to be an ordinary train ride out of Casablanca. I hit shuffle and started listening to this piece by Philip Glass. The second the piece kicked in, everything on the train took on a new shape. The cabins began to glow, the sounds of the machinery became musical, and I could suddenly feel the pulse of this big metallic beast that I was riding on.

WITNESS

An ode to letting in the fears of heartbreak and failure and riding on the crest of those feelings.
“Turn those broken dreams, into rainbows of lazer beams…and keep dancing"

After Paskalev is confronted by “Death”, a young, inoffensive man with his customary questionnaire on life and regrets, Paskalev is granted one final wish; to express himself through dance. The scene unfolds in a cheaply converted old swimming pool, as Mik plays out his routine under the gaze and judgement of Death. “A Witness in the Shadow of Love”. The dance slowly inspires a yearning and rapport between both characters as they come together for the last throes of the video. Bringing home the final release and optional metaphors.

Welcome to Canada

This short film by Adam Loften and Mary Fowles tells the story of Mohammed Alsaleh, a young Syrian refugee granted asylum in Canada in 2014. After fleeing torture and imprisonment by the Assad regime, he is rebuilding his life. Mohammed counsels newly-arrived Syrian refugee families with the same Vancouver-based NGO that aided him during his own resettlement process. Like Mohammed, these families have left loved ones behind and are struggling to adapt to a new land, finding resilience and hope for a new beginning.

Like thousands of other newly-resettled refugees, Mohammed has been striving to bring his family to safety in Canada. Millions of Syrians are currently displaced within Syria’s borders and in neighboring countries.
