Music & Clowns

My brother, Jamie, has a profound learning disability. Despite being close to nonverbal, he demonstrates charisma, a sharp sense of humour, and emotional sensitivity. I team up with my parents to discuss what it is like caring for someone with Down syndrome. We piece together fragments of insight to gain a sense of his inner life, but our differing perspectives reveal as much about our own subjectivity as they do Jamie’s.

We rarely see portrayals of the diverse, ordinary lives of people who have Down syndrome (unless we are connected to someone who has it). Much of what we hear instead is based off a medical narrative. As prenatal screening tests improve, the birth rate of people with Downs has fallen. I believe people should be able to base life-changing decisions on accurate information. But I also feel that a diagnosis does not reflect my brother’s human worth. This film attempts to complement the medical narrative with first-hand stories of what it is like to have someone with Down syndrome in your family. Jamie has enriched our lives and I believe a society can be measured by its capacity to nurture those who are most vulnerable.

REAR VIEW MIRROR

Ingo Hansen returns to the desert opal mining town where he grew up, struggling with his health and searching for answers. At a crossroads in his life, he seeks comfort in reminiscing the impact of the harsh landscapes and crazy adventures he had in Andamooka - one of the most remote places in South Australia.

Ingo soon realises that the thriving outback town he once loved is now bleak and it mercilessly parallels his own impermanence; the harsh winds of life blow not just on the desert but also inside his heart. In its glory days Andamooka had over 3000 residents, but now the opal has dried up and it is a former shadow of itself - with a total population of 316.

It takes a certain type of person to love a place like this, with the isolation and the desolation. Walking through the cemetery Ingo reflects on the grim truths of his reality, and how strange it is to know every body that lies beneath him in the dust. As in life, both the once beautiful landscape and the once promising future he faced are slowly fading way and the story is unforgiving.

Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?

I met Jeffrey Gurian when I first moved to New York. After working in restaurants to make ends meet for a few months, I was itching to do anything involving film. I scoured Craigslist applying to everything I saw that looked somewhat related to video production. A few days later I received an email titled, "RE: Nationally Known Comedy Writer Seeks Intern."  Next thing I knew, I was in Jeffrey's Upper East Side apartment being interviewed to edit videos for his Youtube channel, Comedy Matters TV. The walls in his apartment were filled from ceiling to floor with pictures of Jeffrey with every celebrity on the planet. While I only ended up working for Jeffrey out of his apartment for a few months, the experience left an impression on me.

About five years later, I was struggling to get a narrative film off the ground. Raising funds is not my specialty. I thought, "Am I going to be stuck making content for brands that I don't believe in and just pursuing my original work instead of actually being able to make it?" Jeffrey popped into my head. I identified with his life long pursuit of comedy fame and wanted to tell that story. I called him the next day and we met at a diner to discuss the possibility of me making a film chronicling his life and work in comedy.

"Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?" is a documentary short film that focuses on the career and life of Jeffrey Gurian, a fixture in the comedy world for the last 40 years. Jeffrey has worked with and around the biggest stars in comedy since the 1980s. From Dangerfield to Burle to Dice, Jeffrey has written for them. He has made films, written multiple books, and now runs a Youtube channel that features red carpet interviews with celebrities. He accomplished all of this while also running his own cosmetic dentistry practice.

The contradiction of his two professions drew attention from almost every news station in New York and he was featured in the New York Times as well. While he has since retired from his dental practice, he is still very much in the comedy world pursuing his childhood dream of being a famous comedian. This film takes a deep dive into that pursuit and tells Jeffrey's story on a very intimate level.

"Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?" had its world premiere on Short Of The Week.

The Felling of Colston

Chronicling the felling of the statue of Edward Colston–a 17th Century slave trader–during a Black Lives Matter protest in Bristol, England, and how this act of rebellion made waves across the UK and the World.

June 7th 2020. Sparked by the tragic death of George Floyd in Minnesota, 10,000 people took to the streets of Bristol to make a stand against police brutality, discrimination and systemic racism. The statue of Edward Colston was tied, pulled from its pedestal, rolled to the harbour, and poetically dumped into the very port used to transport millions of slaves in the 1700’s. The event trended Worldwide, prompting similar acts across the UK and the World.

What does this mean for other statues and symbols of problematic historic figures? How do we remember the past without glorifying the horrific deeds perpetrated by these people?

Other Voices: Ava & Bianca

The number of women in the film and television industries has been on a slow but steady increase with campaigns for equal representation, in front of and behind the camera, leading to more inclusive film sets. However, it can still be an isolating space for individuals like Bianca Cline and Ava Benjamins who are two—if not the only—trans cinematographers from Mormon families working in the US.

Après le soleil ❊ After the sun (Gianni Bouyeure, 2019)

Aurèle is a glass-blower. Throughout his career, he desperately tries to attain perfection. He builds monumental sculptures that light up when he gets close to his goal.
After yet another failure, Aurèle changes his approach and it seems to work. He finally reaches the level of satisfaction that he was searching for in his work. However, being proud of himself and his work in front of others seems more complicated than he thought.

Now Is the Time

When internationally renowned Haida carver Robert Davidson was only 22 years old, he carved the first new totem pole on British Columbia’s Haida Gwaii in almost a century. On the 50th anniversary of the pole’s raising, Haida filmmaker Christopher Auchter steps easily through history to revisit that day in August 1969, when the entire village of Old Massett gathered to celebrate the event that would signal the rebirth of the Haida spirit.

Directed by Christopher Auchter - 2019 | 16 min
