Nazaré - Big Wave Surfing

In November 2017 I flew over to Portugal from the UK with huge waves inbound for Nazaré. In the morning of the big swell, Andrew had a nasty wipeout and broke his back and was rushed to hospital after being rescued by the jet ski team and brought to the shore.

I'm not sure who all the surfers are but please tag them and I will add them in the credits.

If you are interested in how this was filmed, there will soon be a 'Behind The Scenes' video coming.

Mata: DDD - NOWNESS

In this track from Mata—fronted by British-Peruvian singer and guitarist Luis Atahualpa Felber—Kenny Kray and Alice Dellal found themselves in the director’s chair for the first time, working with the debut musician and Ffrench—a London-based creative and beauty editor at i-D—in a process they liken to being “in a painter’s studio.” Kray and Dellal explain that they “worked with elements and gestures in a very sporadic and spontaneous way.”

SPEAKING IN VOLTAGES

Pin Park are a polish experimental electronic band formed by Maciek Polak and Maciek Baczyk.
The name is derived from a part on the instruments they use to compose, two “EMS Synthis”. Built in 1971, these were one of the first commercially available synthesisers used and praised by musicians ever since, from Pink Floyd, Brian Eno and Jean Michel Jarre to Aphex Twin and Alessandro Cortini.

These instruments introduce a degree of unpredictability, which can be harnessed as an alternative method of composition, and have a learning curve closer to that of the violin than a modern digital keyboard.

“Speaking in voltages" is an ode to nostalgia and the golden era of analogue instruments, absent in today's digital vortex and the infinite possibilities of a simple modern computer. The documentary was shot entirely in analog format film (16mm, Super8 & Hi8), a medium with similar inherent imperfections and limitations to analogue synthesisers, and focuses on the romantic essence associated with both.

Maciek Polak also owns Analogia.pl, one of the leading and most renowned vintage synthesiser specialists in Europe.
Hundreds of customers worldwide have left high praise for their craftsmanship skills in restoring vintage electronic relics.

During the weeks I was lucky enough to be filming with them in Poland. I discovered a rather unusual hospitality and humility, compared to the wester of the continent. There are no hidden pretensions here, only two friends who enjoy spending time creating unusual rhythms and melodies; either for an audience at concerts or for themselves, isolated in a hut surrounded by snow-covered forests, to the beat of space sounds. An analog homage to analog.

A tranquil day of ice fishing goes suddenly awry when natural selection rears its ferocious head. Something lurks in the depths of the great lonesome mountains of the North-- a land where if you are not the predator, you WILL be the prey. But four skiers will not go down without a fight.

Daniele Luppi: Pretty Prizes (ft. Soko and Karen O) - NOWNESS

The first film for Daniele Luppi’s new MILANO project—a collection of fictionalized stories about misfits, fashionistas, and junkies in mid-1980s Milan—Pretty Prizes is a chic New Wave-style mystery shot by British-born director Barnaby Clay, who has worked with the likes of Rihanna and David Bowie.

For this multi-song video, the New York-based filmmaker has created a beguiling visual narrative to accompany the composer’s new album, bringing together Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O and Brooklyn punk rockers Parquet Courts, who perform the music that appears in this snapshot of sex, death and decadence—conjuring a Milan that was known as ‘Milano da bere' (‘Drinking Milan’).

Episode One:-
Professor Marlowe finds a piece of a map pointing to the place where the Ningyo, a mythical Japanese creature, could be found. The legend claims whomever consumes its flesh will attain remarkable longevity. He presents the project to his peers, who mock and dismiss him as a fraud. He decides to risk everything and go after the Ningyo on his own in hopes to bring to light what could be one of the greatest contributions to science. What he could not anticipate is that, in his search, he is confronted with a choice that puts the very foundations of his morality to the test.

Handsome and Majestic

As part of the release of Handsome & Majestic, we are asking for your help in order to raise funds to send Milan to New York City to get fitted for a suit by renowned tailors Bindle & Keep, who specialize in suits for non-binary and trans people. To contribute to help this wish come true, go to: http://ift.tt/2hQGCbL

In recognition of the Transgender Day of Remembrance/Resilience on November 20th, 2017 and the start of Trans Awareness Week, we are proud to release our short documentary entitled “Handsome and Majestic”. A multiple award-winning 12 minute film that has played at over 25 festivals worldwide from Manitoba to New Zealand, this short documentary profiles Milan, a 15-year-old transgender boy growing up in the northern Canadian city of Prince George, B.C.

As a recently transitioned transgender boy, Milan deals with discrimination from his peers and teachers at school, as he seeks to find other kids like himself. His parents are open and supportive throughout his transition, and his sister Lulu never questioned that Milan was her brother. However, at his elementary school, he must face the lack of education, intolerance and even assault. When Milan meets another transgender boy in his neighbourhood, he finally finds someone his age who understands and shares his experience. With the support of his friends and family, Milan has become a role model and an advocate for trans individuals in his small community and beyond.

INTRA - From a Black hole to the Big-bang

1080p & Headphones recommended.
--
We don't know yet what is inside a black hole, we know it is a singularity, a point where every theories we know dont work anymore.
One of the possibilities is called "The White Hole Theory", a sort of exit from the black hole, a point where everything is born, including space and time.
Some compare it to the Big Bang.

INTRA tells the visual story of this theory, a journey from the black to the white hole, a cosmic tale of death and birth...
As a tribute to Nolan's Interstellar, this second short after NOVAE goes deeper into our conception of cosmos, interpreting the unknown to propose a vision of the most extreme celestial object of our Universe...
--

The Monolith

Pioneering NYC artist, Gwyneth Leech, enters a midtown art studio only to find that her skyline view will soon be blocked by the construction of yet another high-rise hotel.

The Last Day of Sunlight in Norilsk - NOWNESS

British directors James Newton and Edward Edwards Russia's coldest city, Norilsk, where during winter temperatures can drop to -55 and the Sun does not rise for 40 days. The directors explain that this film—which was made as part of the Postcards scheme from Just So & Sheffield Doc/Fest—captures the stories of residents “who grew up between the bleak masses of Soviet-era apartment blocks and its harsh, industrial landscape."

The Copenhagen Core

Discovering an unknown city through timelapse photography is completely unique and very challenging. However, this is how I got to know the central part of the danish capital Copenhagen during nearly 6 months of work. Indepth research and location scouting prior to shooting along with difficult rooftop access and demanding creative post processing has tested the great perseverance and patience that I as a person is very known and recognized for.
Looking back at the hundreds of hours I spent creating this film, I can confidently say that I’m pleased with the result and especially the way I’ve evolved as an artist.

FALL SKIES OF LA PALMA - 4K (UHD)

Four and a half hours a day… That’s how long I have slept each day for ten days. Why would I bother being deprived of vital sleep though? Because my mission and goal was to show the night sky in a different way. The second opus of my sequel ‘Galaxies’ aims at finding new techniques and skills to bring the beauties of the cosmos to the general public, and in this optic, I went to spend a bit more than a week in a privileged place: a dark sky reserve. La Palma is located in the Canary Islands, just a few hundreds kilometers west of northern Africa. Its climate and location enable professional and amateur astronomers to gaze at the stars almost year round in a very little light polluted sky. In fact, the cooperation of more than 19 countries in building a giant observatory site on top of its volcano at 2400m is no surprise, because the skies are drier, purer and darker up there. Having shot on top El Teide in Tenerife, the neighbor island two years before (vimeo.com/163680035), I thought it was the perfect place to go shoot the wonders of the winter night sky. Tenerife also possesses decent skies and opportunities to gaze at the core of the milky way, but when your goal is to observe and capture fainter deep-sky red glows, you need a less polluted and bright atmosphere. That’s why I embarked for an epic and restless astro-adventure on Canary’s darkest island.

Epic and restless, because the goal was to spend all night shooting. So have I done. Every evening I would drive one and a half hours from sea level to 2400m of altitude along the dangerously winding coastal roads to arrive at the top El Roque de Los Muchachos, the volcano. The air is very thin and chilly up there, not to mention the constant wind gusts, making any kind of portable time-lapse astrophotography challenging. I would start shooting from dusk till dawn in the dry cold air, and rest in my rental car while my cameras are shooting. At the break of dawn, I would drive down to my holiday condo and sleep for about 4-5 hours. I needed to get back up, because no matter how much I planned the trip before hand using google Earth to find good shooting spots, you need to scout during the day, otherwise you won’t get a chance to see anything. If you don’t know what dark is, I advise you to get up there. It is so dark because of the basaltic rocks, that almost none of my sequences are taken below ISO 6400 and 10 seconds of exposure, no matter what the focal length. You need all the light you can gather! However the real challenge of an astrolapser is the adapt to the local conditions: if the wind picks up, you need to lower your shutter speed to avoid jitter as much as possible, meaning you will have to compensate in any other way. This game of fine manipulation is what makes your astrolapse look good, or horrendous. There is no in between. The slightest slip-up, and you could see the result of a long energy and time investment go to waste (I did have to delete all of my first night’s captures because of misjudgment…). Practice makes perfect, especially within this novel field of astrolapse. I wanted to use narrower angles, astro-modified cameras and contrast filters to reveal the light and colors of nebulae and gas clouds that the winter sky is strewed with. In this short film that also includes day-time sequences of my unforgettable journey around the island, I wanted to feature some of these deep-sky scenes, as a test.

The main goal of this short film was showing La Palma under its Fall skies. It was also the occasion for me to use motion control tools for the first time (Yes, it was about time). I used the Vixen Polarie to track the deep sky sequences to get maximum details and sharpness. I also used the Syrp tilt and pan bracket system for wider angle shots. To increase contrasts at angles higher than 14mm, I used the Pure Night filter by Lonely Speck. Camera wise, I used the Canon 6D Baader modified to reveal the H-alpha emission nebulae, the Sony a7s (other night shots), and the Sony a7rII (day shots). From the 1% young crescent moon setting to the blood reds of Barnard’s loop, I tried getting a maximum of interesting and innovative shots. I am sure you can spot countless meteors (Leonids, Taurids and others). Also, some multicolor airglow and dust clouds from the Sahara were rampant and usually add a lot of haze and colors to some frames. On the tracked deep-sky sequences, you can also notice loads of satellites, and these are geo-synchronous ones that stay in synch with the Earth’s orbit! In some wide-angle shots, you can probably spot the famous zodiacal lights too.
These were the main goals for me, and I believe these objects have rarely been photographed in that way before, but unlike what you might think, it is possible with nowadays technology, and is very relevant as this test suggests! I will gladly provide a more detailed list of gear and processing techniques upon request.
 Enjoy this short!
