It’s been nearly 30 years since the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Follow my wife and I as we explore the city of Pripyat, the abandoned ghost town near the nuclear reactor.
Part 5:
After leaving the old school, we spot a familiar sight. The iconic pool and fitness centre of Pripyat was made famous in a video game called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Having played that game as a teenager, my wife and I felt that we had been in this place before. The layout is nearly exactly as the game portrayed, only larger and more eerie in real life.
It was discomforting to learn that in the first 5 years after Pripyat was evacuated, people would sometimes return to swim in the pool as the plumbing and electricity still functioned there. If we were simply trying to avoid contact with water droplets, a swim in the radioactive pool would be devastating.
