Headed East

Tired of city life and in search of adventure, my friend Fraser and I left London on two motorcycles with a plan to drive to Budapest and back. We wanted to leave technology behind, to wild camp, cook our own food, reconnect with others and importantly ourselves.

The journey took two months, crossed 10 countries and covered a distance of over 10,000km. This personal film shot on 16mm documents our motorcycle journey into the wild.

Tales of the Unexpected: Michèle Lamy - NOWNESS

Energetic and attention-grabbing, fashion’s timeless muse Michèle Lamy—fresh from her latest venture setting up a high-concept boxing ring in a London department store—has been a stalwart of cutting edge fashion for decades, whether working closely with husband Rick Owens or accumulating a breathtaking archive of Comme des Garçons. In this raw filmic portrait, which accompanies a full-length interview with Lamy for Puss Puss Magazine, director Joshua Woods gets comfortable with the notorious creative alongside her books, stories, and a duo of Bengal cats. Speaking about his decision to film Lamy after years of distant fascination, Woods explains: “From my early days of shooting Fashion Week I would always see Michèle and she would just be floating about, and I’d say to myself, ‘What an exceptional woman!’ I saw her magic unfold over the following years, where I found her level of excellence contagious—she effects everyone around her with a gracious energy and a loving spirit.”

Underwaterfall

In February 2018 I visited Cape Town, South Africa. During a location scout I stumbled upon this pier and imangined it during early morning light. So I came back early morning the next day and was amazed by the atmosphere. That’s when I got inspired to shoot a dance performance on this very spot. I looked on social media for modern ballet dancers and was lucky to find Nuske Tamryn, a capetownian, who, without meeting me, was happy to star in the video.

We set up a date and met for the first time and only time on a Sunday morning in complete darkness at this pier. We listened to 4 songs and decided on Bearcubs - Underwaterfall, because it matched the mood perfectly. Then we shot 6 takes in the dusk until the sun was up. Truly a one-of-a-time experience.

Rich is the Life

Rich is the Life is a multi-award short documentary by Eight Engines.

The story follows Marko Lauronen who, after a 20 year career at Nokia mobile phones, was diagnosed with crippling manic depression. Over the space of a year the realisation slowly dawned on him that he could no longer function in mainstream society. When faced with the heartbreaking choice of a big life change or the possibility of not being able to continue living Marko chose to leave his family and lifestyle behind to rekindle his boyhood passion for gold prospecting.

Rich is the Life is a cinematic documentary which follows Marko on his quest to find some of the purest gold on earth, hidden deep within the heart of the arctic circle.

Marko takes us on a journey through the frozen tundras of Lapland as he intimately explores his own gold fever and its complex relationship with his depression, alongside his passion for the world he inhabits. Through Marko’s story, the film aims to provide a rare insight into a lifestyle which is quickly becoming extinct.

Random walks

-SYNOPSIS-
The visual world rests on interviews, the sound of which follows through the film as a narrative.
We follow the story of five immigrants in Budapest, two of whom still lives here as refugees.
We touch upon various levels of their refugee life from the banal to the very severe.
In economic theory random walk means that stock market prices cannot be predicted.
thus, each time, the price had a fifty-fifty chance of closing higher or lower than
the previous day.

The Balinese tradition of Ogoh Ogoh - NOWNESS

American filmmaker and photographer Travis Barron travelled to Bali for his latest film—an awe-inspiring anthropological portrait of the country's Nyepi festival, where silence, parade and meditation drive away the evils that plague all living beings. Barron follows a team of Balinese artists as they build an Ogoh-Ogoh statue: a towering, demonic form of bamboo, grass, and papier-mâché. These terrifying constructions become possessed by malign spirits during the course of the festival, which are subsequently purged at the end of the celebration—driving away any odious entities that have accumulated within these surreal sculptures. Barron, whose previous film work has taken him from Tokyo to Bangkok, explains: “The statues range from corrupt princes and demons to Hindu gods, and are designed to be as terrifying as possible. Each Ogoh-Ogoh requires a month of painstaking assembly, before being burned to banish the evil spirits. Until the next year.”

Rituals: Ceremonial - NOWNESS

For the latest episode of our series exploring worship and spirituality around the world, French contemporary artist and filmmaker Caroline Monnet explores ritual practices among indigenous First Nation tribes in North America. Here she explains the complexities of depicting ceremonies that ordinary remain secret from the eyes of the world:

“Given the importance and abundance of ceremonial practices to most Indigenous communities, there is an inevitable curiosity from the outside world to ‘know’ or ‘see’ how these sacred rituals play themselves out. But can anything remain sacred and private in a world that demands immediacy and a projected image of what sells unscrupulously as the truth? Can Indigenous communities practice their cultural beliefs without the fear of a camera trying to capture the ceremony? “Often, this quest for forbidden knowledge speaks to ravenous cultural consumerism and a lack of guidance from a non-Indigenous standpoint. The narrative is built on a collage of original 16mm, 8mm and digital footage pieced together to provide a hypnotic rhythm that draws us inward to remind us that some ritualistic practices are confidential and belong exclusively to the communities who perform them.”

Phil Minton's Dirty Song - NOWNESS

Veteran musician Phil Minton joins a troupe of experimental musicians, including David Toop and Evan Parker, in this scandalous audio-visual performance from directorial duo Maxime Rossi and Clemens Habicht. The sexually suggestive film was inspired by a 1963 FBI investigation into a recording of iconic rock 'n' roll track ‘Louie Louie,’ in which the song’s unintelligible lyrics were assumed by the puritan-minded authorities to be profane. Speaking of the playful combination of sound and visuals, directors Rossi and Habicht explain: “During the investigation, what was brought to light was not any obscenity hidden inside of slurred speech but rather the dirty suspicions of the puritan mind. Minton’s performance can be mined for suggestions of the obscene and traces of the profane hidden brazenly in plain sight.”

A Field Guide To Losing Your Friends

Buy The Book: tylerdunning.com/shop/field-guide

Nate Henn was full of humor, generosity and spirit. He was so alive. But then, in 2010, a series of terror-related bombings devastated Kampala, Uganda, leaving 74 people dead, including Henn. The news was a devastating blow for his best friend Tyler Dunning, who plunged into darkness, grief, anger and self-medication. His only solace? Exploring Rocky Mountain National Park, where the cliff faces, pine forests and wildlife softened his raw emotions. It was a failed attempt to climb Longs Peak that really changed him: The humbling experience sent him on a quest to visit all 59 U.S. national parks. From Glacier to Bryce, Saguaro to Kenai, the Everglades to Yellowstone, he roamed. And through the adventures that unfolded, he pieced his life back together. He started to let others in. And, finally, he was able to say goodbye.

At home

I am Nick, a freelance photographer.
In the past 10 years I‘ve been travelling and photographing around the world.
What I realized, though, was that I had gradually stopped seeking new destinations. I found a place that offered me a sense of stability and warmth where my inspiration and creativity amplified. Nature in all its’ forms was still surrounding me: Snowy landscapes, deep canyons, lakes and rivers, vast forests and of course the sea.

In the end, I think I found my destination, a place that has nurtured me, and has always been so close to me. That makes me feel home!

ENTRE CIEL ET TERRE - La Palma in 4K astrolapse

There are only a few regions in the world where the skies meet the Earth with almost no distinction between the two. La Palma in the Canary islands is one of them. ‘Entre Ciel et Terre’ literally means ‘Between the sky and Earth’ and was a perfect fit here. While most of the volcanic island is isolated under a thick layer of clouds, the tip of its crater often punches through it and allows you to be one step closer to the Heavens. At an altitude of about 2300 meters above sea level you feel so far removed from any kind of civilization especially because of the cloud inversion. The air is thin and pristine and the living conditions are harsh but that’s the reason why the ORM (Observatory Roque de Los Muchachos) -operated by the IAC (Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias) and part of the European Northern Observatory, was built up there. The summit of La Palma’s caldera benefits from dry and clear skies almost year round with almost no light pollution to disturb it, and only rare Calima (this dusty wind coming from the Sahara desert). It’s safe to say that the ‘Isla Bonita’ is one of the top places in the world to observe the northern hemisphere’s night sky!

The purpose of this short was to capture that special place from a different perspective. I really wanted to give the audience sort of a confusion as to where they are because that’s precisely the feeling you get when you look up at the stars from the mountains. You somehow lose sense of any orientation as if you were lost in the immensity of the universe! One image that I had in my head to describe La Palma’s summit was Asgard or Mount Olympus, where all the elements are united and blend together divinely. Even life found a way to survive in this environment bombarded by high-energy rays during the day and battered by cold winds at night. One highlighted species is the fascinating and mind-boggling Tajinaste flower. Also called Tenerife Bugloss or tower of jewels, this docile and resilient endemic plant can endure extreme drought. I included it in the movie because it looks majestic and prehistoric. It really adds something special to the special atmosphere I wanted to convey, especially when the milky way galaxy and the sea of clouds move in the background! By tracking the night sky or displaying the sequences upside-down I was able to give that impression of the Earth floating and rotating in the void of the cosmos. The unusual but innovative close-up views of some parts of the milky way (including the core, Rho Ophiuchi or Cygnus) moving behind the operating telescopes of the OMC helped me give that only human dimension to the movie. The use of an astro-modified camera also enabled me to almost get the full range of colors a DSLR can pick up on single frames from nebulae.

I already traveled to La Palma island in November 2017 but I really wanted to shoot there again for several reasons. First I really wanted to get more shots of the core region that would be less spoiled by light pollution than the ones I recently took on Tenerife. Secondly I desperately wanted to meet the extremely talented photographer Alyn Wallace (check him out: alynwallacephotography.com) and do a collaboration with him on the island. Thirdly I am still on my way of perfecting the novel art of deep-sky time-lapse and I wanted to reshoot some sequences that didn’t give satisfying results in the past. Finally I wanted to personally experience the Spring vibe of the island when all the plants are blooming and give that sweet smell to the air. I am absolutely thrilled to have met all my expectations (and more!), and I really believe the results look stunning!

Everything was recorded with the Canon 6D Baader modified, the Sony a7s, the Sony a7rII and a variety of bright lenses ranging from 14mm to 300mm. I used the Lonely Speck Pure Night and Matt Aust Light pollution filters to reduce light pollution and increase details, and also the Vixen Polarie to track the stars and get cleaner shots. Syrp Genie 3 axis system was used for motion control. All post production was made in Lr with the special timelapse plus plugin, Sequence for mac, TLDF, and final production was made in FCPX. I hope you like the movie as much as I liked shooting and processing it and I thank everyone of you for your support. The Burton Supercell 4k StormLapse - May 24, 2018

These majestic supercells spun over northern Nebraska on 5/24/2018. As they approached my camera, they split right where the sun was setting. The sunset timed perfectly with the storms arrival at my location as it started pouring down rain right after I shut off the camera. Music by Isaac Hananiah.

META: Immunity

Director's Statement:

The term “I do what I love to escape” is something that Aaron and myself disagree with. We believe it is quite opposite of that. Our belief being that when you are doing what you love, you are completely tuned in and as close to reality as you can humanly be. It’s like a form of meditation. When Aaron is at the bar, he is tuned out. He is having troubles facing reality but knows exactly what he has to do in order to heal himself. That is where we coined the term Immunity. It is an act of healing. So Aaron leaves the bar and his demons behind in order to find himself, which is through riding his motorcycle.

Overall, we had a very strong crew. This was a passion project so I was fortunate to have some very talented people pull some huge favors to help complete this. I couldn’t have done it without a solid team behind me. I would like to give a huge shout out to the boys at WZRD Media and Ryan Sheets from Sheets Studios for believing in me and truly allowing our vision to become a reality.

The Mauritania Railway: Backbone of the Sahara

Directed, produced and photographed by Macgregor

macgregor.works

Shot on a modified Sony F35 to achieve optimum lightness and speed through the Saharan landscapes, without sacrificing on image quality.

The Mauritania Railway: Backbone of the Sahara is a documentary film directed by MacGregor. Concepted and produced in partnership with Antonio Aguilar, Tim Hyten, and Aaron Mckenzie, the film also features a score by award-winning composer Rhian Sheehan.

Built to transport Mauritania’s vast iron ore reserves, the Mauritania Railway is a 704-kilometer line that cuts through the Sahara Desert on its way from the mining center of Zouerat to the port city of Nouadhibou on Africa’s Atlantic coast.

At 3-kilometers in length, trains on this line are among the longest and heaviest in the world. Passenger cars are sometimes attached to the train, but more often men opt to stow away atop the hopper cars, where daytime temperatures exceed 40°C. Death from falls is common.

The Mauritania Railway: Backbone of the Sahara follows the journey of Malick, a 27 year-old merchant who relies on the train for his livelihood, even as he risks death each time he climbs aboard. Despite the danger, the train is a lifeline for Malick and the families that live along the railway’s path.

Over a two year period, the crew behind The Mauritania Railway: Backbone of the Sahara embedded themselves in the community of men and women who depend on the train for their livelihood. The result is a cinematic yet immersive glimpse into a way of life that exists nowhere else in the world.

Macgregor and his team shot this film entirely on a Sony F35 camera, which they modified with a Nikon mount in the pursuit of lightness and a wider array of available lenses. A 25-pound camera setup is far from ideal when shooting atop a moving train, but the resulting filmic quality gives audiences a view of Western Saharan landscapes that they’ve never seen before.

In addition to his career as a commercial director and cinematographer, Macgregor has also garnered praise for his narrative films. Coming on the heels of his award-winning films Similo (2014) and Los Angeles 1991 (2015), The Mauritania Railway: Backbone of the Sahara expands upon MacGregor’s ability to make a landscape, as much as any human, a character in the unfolding drama.

The Mauritania Railway: Backbone of the Sahara represents the proposed first installment of “Colliding Worlds,” a new series which explores some of the world’s most remote, harsh, and breathtaking environments, where traditional lifestyles collide with the modern world. These regions, too easily dismissed by travelers, are in fact backdrops for beautiful human pageants that play out every day. In the back of our minds, we know these places exist but we never stop to think that human life goes on there everyday – and it goes on in fascinating ways.

The Mauritania Railway: Backbone of the Sahara is earning early praise, including the top prize for cinematography at the XVI International Film Festival of Almeria, and the jury prize for stylistic achievement and best cinematography at the Social Impact Media Awards 2018. The film is currently being shown in festivals around the world, including the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the Moscow International Documentary Film Festival DOKer, the 41th Grenzland-Filmtage in Germany, and Cortoespaña, among others.

Catharsis with Marie-Lou Desmeules - NOWNESS

French Canadian artist Marie-Lou Desmeules transforms a therapy session into a riotous, full-bodied display in this new film from brother directors Guillermo and Javier Polo Gandia. The artist, whose work uses the body as a canvas, metamorphoses the forms of her subjects—with daubs of paint and roughly applied plastics—into grotesque, colourful portraits of the rich and the famous, from Donald Trump to John Waters. The fraternal filmmaking duo explain of their spectacular subject: “We wanted to create a film that entered into Marie-Lou’s world and build a surreal story that could match it, that became an extension of her art. The visit to the therapist was a perfect and funny way to express the way she finds her inspiration, of how she works, and why she does what she does."

Move Freely - NOWNESS

This new film from director and choreographer Wynn Holmes—being the inaugural project for her newly launched dance company, Lo Fi Dance Theory—explores performance as a liberating expression for marginalised Roma youth living in Belgrade, Serbia. For this project, Wynn worked with GRUBB (Gypsy Roma Urban Balkan Beats), a foundation based in the country’s capital city that acts as a hub for Roma artists and activists, helping them to celebrate and promote their cultural traditions. “The architectural landscapes that the performers dance against represent the hostile spaces in Europe where Roma communities are often mistreated and excluded,” explains the film’s director. “Its three main characters dance in liberated, self-determined movements—contrasting with the world in which they live, a landscape of inhospitable architecture.”

A portrait of Iraq.

If you Google image search “Iraq” looking for photos of anything other than soldiers and war then you're in for some serious scrolling...

Since the spring of 2016 I’ve been traveling back and forth to Iraq working on a longer form doc with Nations Media. The Iraq I’ve come to know and love over the course of these visits is a drastically different place than version of the country I grew up seeing in the news.

On my most recent trip I brought a 16mm film camera, one lens and a few cans of film to capture portraits of people I met along the way.
