Move Freely - NOWNESS

This new film from director and choreographer Wynn Holmes—being the inaugural project for her newly launched dance company, Lo Fi Dance Theory—explores performance as a liberating expression for marginalised Roma youth living in Belgrade, Serbia. For this project, Wynn worked with GRUBB (Gypsy Roma Urban Balkan Beats), a foundation based in the country’s capital city that acts as a hub for Roma artists and activists, helping them to celebrate and promote their cultural traditions. “The architectural landscapes that the performers dance against represent the hostile spaces in Europe where Roma communities are often mistreated and excluded,” explains the film’s director. “Its three main characters dance in liberated, self-determined movements—contrasting with the world in which they live, a landscape of inhospitable architecture.”
