My Dead Dad's Porno Tapes

Was my father’s leftover stuff the key to who he really was?

Winner of the Vimeo Staff Pick Award at the 2018 Ottawa International Animation Festival.

"Honest, funny, nostalgic and incredibly inventive, the recipient of this prize tells the story of a young man sifting through his late father’s belongings in an attempt to uncover the intimate details of his life. A perfectly arranged menagerie of old film footage, audio recordings, and meticulously crafted stop motion animation, it is a beautiful tribute to a complicated but devoted father-son relationship. We are proud to present the Vimeo Staff Pick Award at the Ottawa International Animation Festival to “My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes” by Charlie Tyrell." - Meghan Oretsky, Curator at Vimeo

The Beauty of Senja - A Hiking Trip to Northern Norway

A hiking trip to the true spirit of the mountain world in a less travelled area of Northern Norway: Welcome to Senja. The weather in Norway can always change quickly, especially in the mountains. Sometimes you just have 5 minutes of light, then rain showers and clouds are passing like trains and suddenly the sun comes out and shows us beautiful rainbows and incredible colours up in the sky.

It was quite painful to get up for sunrise at 2 am in the morning after just two hours of sleep in a tent and then hike to the summit. It's the ultimate challenge for every landscape photographer: You should give it a try - even if chances are low, there's still hope for a tiny gap in the clouds that will reward you with the most fantastic light. These moments let you forget all your efforts.

I'm very happy to share a new video of my series "The Beauty of", this time in beautiful Senja together with some talented photographers from all over the world. Special thanks to my friends Max Rive Photography and Daniel Kordan, it's always a pleasure working together with you guys.

A SUPER 8 ODE TO OUR FRENCH ROAD TRIP

'We travelled in the spring time, from mid May to mid June, du nord au sud, from the port of Calais south to Nice, through the Alps, Lyon, across to Biarritz and then north to Paris. What we experienced wasn’t the provincial lifestyle I had for so long fantasised about (although I have no doubt it exists) but the complete opposite. What we found was raw and real and a side of France I hadn’t imagined or stopped to consider.'

Scenes: The Wicked Shit - NOWNESS

No doubt you've heard of the Juggalos—the wild fanbase of face-painted American rappers Insane Clown Posse, whose fans (it's estimated) number well over a million. Once a year this disparate group convene in Ohio for the Gathering of the Juggalos, a festival of fire-spinning, smoke breathing, and bare fist fighting, accompanied by a soundtrack from ICP's label, Psycopathic.

Enter Joshua Gordon, director of underground hit Krahang, which dropped on Dazed earlier this year. Gordon, an obsessive documentarian of extreme communities and fanbases, has "been interested in Juggalos since I was a little kid," as he explained to NOWNESS. It made absolute sense, then, for Gordon to attend the much talked about annual gathering in order to dispel some myths about this daunting and seemingly diabolical community. What he walked away with was a strangely warm and tender portrait of a group that has been classified as a gang by the FBI.

Speaking about his time spent with this compellingly clownish community, the Irish-born director explains: "They’re a diehard community with a strong presence online and a very unique personal style. I’ve seen a number of short films on them but always found them a bit bland and obvious," continues the London-based filmmaker, "so I wanted to meet some of them and make a film about them in my own style, something more tender and less sensationalist.

"My idea was to make more of a moving photo book then a traditional documentary, and to film it, direct it and do the sound on my own so I could make a more natural connection with the jugallos and jugalettes, just hang out with them for a week and see what they’re about."

This East Timor (Timor Leste)

What do you know about East Timor ( or Timor Leste as it is known over there)?

It is the newest country in the Southeast Asian bloc, gaining independence in 2002, and one of the least traveled country in Asia with only 60,000 travelers last year. To put that into perspective, Indonesia, its close neighbor had over 1.32 million arrivals last year.

Due to these facts, I decided to embark on a journey into this unknown land and traveled around the country for 10 days in July 2018. I got to see untouched nature unlike anything I have seen before, one of the smiliest people out there, and best of all, a country untouched by over-tourism. During my trip, I also saw poverty, unmaintained infrastructure, and a fire incident in the city. The trip was one hell of a rollercoaster ride that pushes me to the limit, to say the least. There is a long way to go for Timor Leste to become a prominent destination for travelers, but there is also an untapped potential that awaits those who seek real adventurers. If you are looking for a real adventure, you will surely find it here.

I hope you enjoy this video and I hope I was able to convey the beauty, and the life of the people in Timor Leste through this 3 minutes video.

Switzerland In Miniature - A Short Timelapse Film
If you're in the mountains, looking down, you see so many things happening. Especially in places like Lucerne or Schwyz where course ships sailing back and forth through the lake, fishermen trying to catch something and cars crawling up and down the steep roads.
I wanted to portrait this like you are watching an ants hill, which gives such a funny perspective on things.
Enjoy.

Silent Sam

Sam is a 27-year-old music-teaching, sovereign ring-wearing, chanting Buddhist. He is the lead singer of an up-and-coming punk band - but he’s also mute ... at least for most of the time. After two unsuccessful vocal chord operations, Sam spends most of his time in pain and on voice rest. Yet, by communicating silently through writing notes, mouthing words and blowing kisses (one for yes and two for no), he still somehow manages to be the chattiest person in the room.

As he sacrifices speaking on a daily basis in order to battle through the excruciating pain of singing, Sam finds himself and his voice at a crossroads - give up on his dreams of music or continue singing and risk remaining silent forever?

Silence takes its mental toll and his sense of isolation deepens. Whilst exploring new treatment for his voice, navigating work at a door factory and maintaining his loving relationship with girlfriend Tilly, Sam’s journey leads him to have a radical revelation.

Goodbye Design

Goodbye Design was a passion project of summer 2018. The idea was born when I walked out of a museum a few months ago amazed by a product design exhibition from around '50s. The geniality of minimal design mixed with used retro flavor and playful accent colors of everyday objects (mainly Braun) were the essentials for the concept of this short movie. Everything is driven by an excellent track from Dirty Art Club which was a perfect match with the rhythmical side of the concept. "Good(bye) Design " is a reminder of how people slowly lose a relationship with true Good Design. Let's look back at immortal design icons in this audiovisual experience! Enjoy ;)

Hors de la cage

In a small village in southeast France a 19-year-old boy called Pierre showed us how he lives without the standards of our actual time. He preserves a millenary culture where white horses and bulls are his whole life. Away from the modern life, he just needs simplicity to feel joyful.

This is an small piece shot on Kodak 16mm Film with no pretensions. We just tried to show how nowadays there are still young people who don't fall into paradigms of today's modern life and they still enjoy what life is all about.

Special Thanks to Pierre Mailham and Julie Nicolas for let us feel like home and all the help they'd given us.

Forget Me Not

Set in the 1970's, the short film centers on two little girls, who struggle with their mother’s bipolar disease that constantly disrupts their lives and burdens them to grow up early.

This semi-autobiographical film tells a story about the relationship between mother and daughters and how who takes care of who can become interchangeable.

We’ve always wanted to make a film that stems from our personal experience of growing up with a bipolar mother. While the details were changed, we were the little girls that sometimes longed for normality and we were afraid of what might await us at home after school. Mental illnesses often stay ignored by society and people who suffer from them are excluded from their community. We believe it is important to raise awareness on the issue, because these illnesses affect more than the sick.

Vivienne Ming - SuperHuman(ity): Optimizing Human Potential

Inspired by a remarkable personal transition, Vivienne Ming, CEO of Socos and self-proclaimed mad scientist, has set out to make people better versions of themselves. Whether she’s creating wearable technology to help autistic children learn empathy, or designing cutting-edge neuroprosthetics, her goal is the same—to augment human potential. While she believes technology can help us be our best selves, she also cautions of a future where some people are augmented and others are not. It’s imperative that we start these conversations now, so that all humans have the same opportunities to live out their full potential.

The Litas

This is a film about Gevin Fax, the oldest member of the women motorcycle collective, The Litas. Growing up in Los Angeles as an African American lesbian in the 1960s, Gevin found that the world wasn’t always forgiving. She started riding dirt bikes at the age of twelve which distanced her even further from the other kids. Though it was because of her love for riding that gifted her peace of mind; it was her meditation, her medicine, her way to escape all of the other noise. Now, because of The Litas, she shares her love for the road with thousands of women all over the world.
-William Desena

The Litas exists as the world's largest female biking collective and provides a inclusive community for female riders globally. In 2016 I met a Lita member while backpacking Costa Rica. This led me to LA based Lita member, Gevin Fax. Gevin stuck me as a leader and tenacious headstrong woman right off the bat. I am inspired by Gevin's unapologetic ability to follow her heart while empowering others to do the same. My hope is this film will instill the same flame for our audience to pursue whatever it is that makes them feel most alive.

Happy Animals

Rottnest Island is one of the most remote and isolated places you can journey to on Earth. It’s also one of the only places you can meet a quokka. This is the story of a tiny island off the west coast of Australia that's become a global magnet for selfie tourism. All because of one very happy animal.

Among the Spires - Copenhagen hyperlapse

Walking the ancient cobblestone streets of Copenhagen brings me a distinct calm mood to take a moment apart from the main streets. Allthough the old street's sorrunded by both modern architecture and old vividly coloured houses, what really gave me the idea to this project was the characteristic spires, rising above the horizontal skyline. I decided the spires to be the revolving point in this personal project where I've incorporated my newly developed hyperlapse techniques.
I shot this on multiple visits during 2018.

Cabins & Fjords - Norway 4K

Images & Music by Fjordlapse Photography 2018.
To license individual clips contact me at
fjordlapsephotography@gmail.com

These timelapse clips in 4K resulotion are from the Sunnmøre area in western Norway, where Hjørundfjorden and it´s beautiful surroundings are the stars of the show. But I was trying to find the more quiet and more simplified and stripped down version of it .
The season changes, the weather rules and if you have a chance you should try the slow pace life in the fjords and discover some of it´s secrets. But keep it simple. Stay away from the noice.

Everything was shot on Sony A7Rii and Sony A6000 with Carl Zeiss Loxia 21mm 2.8 and Sony Zeiss 35mm 2.8 lenses.
Pocket for slidershots with Syrp Genie mini för panning.
Edited with Lightroom 6 and LRTimelapse.

Golestan: The Flower Garden (Iran)

Experimental film about Iran that combines archive footage from the past 60 years with images captured while in Iran in 2014. The poem that is spoken throughout is about finding beauty and satisfaction in life no matter the hardships you endure (see translation below).

Originally created as music video for the title track of Max LL's new album Golestan: hyperurl.co/golestan

Directed & Edited by Maude Plante-Husaruk - husaruk.com
Narrated by Sally
Archive footage from the Prelinger Archives
Videoscope effect by Simon Garrett
Music by Max LL - maxll.ca

Max LL on the music:
“For the title track Golestan, I wanted to write music that embodied the beauty and richness of Iranian culture, the kindness and impassioned nature of the people and their resilience in facing the hardship and challenges the country had to go through in the past half century."

We’d like to thank all the amazing people that inspired us along our journey: Narges, Shahab, Reza, Nahid, Zoya, Arash, Parinaz, Parham, Sana, Maryam, Hamid, Nastaran, Keivan, Sally, Saughar & Amir, Nahid & Amin, Shiva, Zahra, Vahid, Amir, Eva, Klaus, Felix & Christina, Khayrina, Lalmo & Mona.

Golestan (Persian: گلستان‎ Golestȃn "The Flower Garden", "Land of Flowers")

The words that are spoken throughout the video are from a nameless Hafez poem and could be translated from Farsi as:

"To me a rose-tinted cheek from flower garden of the world is enough;
From this meadow the shade of that flying cypress is enough;
May I and the company of the deceitful folk be far!
Of all earth's treasures a cup of wine to me is enough;
The palace of paradise for good deeds is bestowed,
To me, drunken and a beggar, the cloister of Magians is enough;
Sit beside the brook and watch the passage of life,
To me the image of passage of life to watch is enough;
Look for the cash in this world and the pain,
If these don't satisfy you, to me the profit and loss is enough;
The darling is with me, why should I desire more?
The pleasure of discourse with my dear darling is enough;
For God's sake send me not to paradise from your door,
For in this world the head of your street to me is enough;
Hafiz! it is unfair to complain about the watery flow of fate,
The nature like water, and moving gazelles to you is enough;"

“The Undefeated” is a digital brand of ESPN focusing on the intersection of sports and race. For its new interview series, we designed the opening titles and design system for the primetime cable premiere of “The Undefeated In-Depth: Serena Williams with Common.” The minimalist design uses type over closely cropped imagery to capture the intimacy of the interview between the tennis legend and musician.

GO Colombia

Filmed over 5 weeks in Colombia this piece is about innocence and travel in a country full of genuinely kind and loving people. It is a video narrated by my wife with words written for my daughter.

I want to thank Kindha Gorman for writing this lovely poem as well as my wife for narrating it. Thank you to my family for being so understanding and for supporting me in doing what I love every day. I hope we can look back on this and remember the beautiful time we had together. After all is said and done, our time on this earth, we will always have this.
