GLACIER EXIT

We stood on the ice dunes of the glaciers of Alaska in the midst of a snowy winter. Trekking the slopes of another planet had been on our list for a long time. The silence and majesty of the mountains surrounding us, the bluest ice we had ever seen and the steady rush of ice turned to water. How did we get here? We met Rick by chance on a rainy road in Seward, Alaska. He had a worn, work jacket, a great white beard and the friendliest demeanor two travelers could ask for. He turned out to be the skeleton key to the locked treasure that was our way into Exit Glacier. We had the entire ice field to ourselves. And a sole chance to tell its story. So we took it.

Age Appropriate: Club 99.7 - NOWNESS

Club 99.7 is Danish artist and director Nina Holmgren’s tribute to old age, and in particular, her poet grandfather.

“Time ticks slow

Towards whom does it go?
My teeth in water swim
As I like to keep clean and trim
The clothes should fit you

Like a woman’s touch so warm,
Caressing my very form
The wounds of time
They lovingly hold
So I can stay well-dressed
When I’m a hundred years old.”

– Willy Kristian

Major Lazer and Showtek "Believer"

The concept of the video was inspired by the images of Omran Daqneesh, the Syrian boy covered in dust in the ambulance after his house was hit by a bomb. Like everyone in the world I was heartbroken by that image but I also saw a glimmer of hope. As dark as the subject matter is the point of our "Believer" video was to capture the resilience of youth and the hope displayed by communities coming together to save victims from the rubble.

If it wasn't for the support from Sjoerd of Showtek and guidance from Diplo and his creative director Sara, this video would not have turned out as emotionally powerful as it has. They supported us going to the Middle East, shooting with all local cast, crew and keeping it as authentic as possible. There were countless obstacles that go along with shooting in an unfamiliar country but with the help of the local film community we got through them all and created something special in the process.

Kuwait Timelapse & Hyperlapse

Kuwait, the prototypical oil-rich state, has more than ten percent of the world's estimated oil reserves, and is a leading exporter of petroleum. Tourists, who look forward to a relaxed entry into the Muslim world, can enter Kuwait, and wander around souks, osques and other sandy traces of ancient Bedouin days. But, behind the extravagant richness, lies the traditional values and warm Arabian hospitality.

Thanks to my friend Ali Awadh for his invitation to Kuwait. It was good time in this nice country.

Kuwait is a small, oil-rich constitutional emirate, with foreign workers constituting 90 percent of the labour force. Kuwaiti nationals constitute 1.1million of the 3.4million population in the country, and they get to enjoy the benefits of a generous social welfare system that guarantees employment, housing, education and healthcare.
Kuwait City has numerous attractions which include excellent museums, a corniche ornamented with combed beaches and extravagant restaurants, modern shopping complexes and marinas, long and lazy retreats, and new beach resorts.
Outside Kuwait City, however, there are only few attractions, except at resorts along the coast. Tourist development of the historical Failaka Island is still in developmental stage. There are flat desert plains that are given over for oil excavation, and there are few distinctive features.

Max Cooper feat Kathrin deBoer - Seed (Official video by Vincent Houze)

From the new album 'Emergence' out now
Buy 'Emergence' http://ift.tt/2eb3XTR

This track was an exploration of the building blocks of living expression. Linking the basic emotional expression of the human voice delivering simple chord structures, to the early expression of living morphologies.

Kathrin did sing lyrics during the recording session, but I found the layered vocal chords so powerful that I decided to strip everything away. The sound of the voice itself, and Kathrin’s intonation within that constraint, carried more meaning for me than any words would.

This approach also seemed to fit with the idea for the music being part of the story of early multicellular life, where simple forms were being explored, and the beginnings of experimentation with structures that could compete for nutrients in a water environment more than 500 million years ago before land life had begun. The link was about simple, beautiful living form and structure.

Vincent Houze did an amazing job of making this early life, and the ebb and flow of the ocean, dance to the music. If you watch carefully, every movement and change in visual structure is linked to tonal changes and rhythms in the music. Of course, it’s not biologically accurate, it’s Vincent’s interpretation of the story, as it’s not supposed to be a science lecture. As with all of the Emergence content, it’s primarily designed to point us towards the beauty of natural processes and systems, and their links to how we feel. The feeling conveyed also makes me think of the fragility of these systems, in light of the bleaching of many reefs in recent times, by rising sea temperatures.

I decided to complement this basic idea with plenty of detailing and partially randomised complexity around the percussion. I wanted to try and make the track rhythmically organic, to fit in with the theme of the wider visual story at that point. So I made the drums fairly lose, and used a lot of spectral effects to warp and mush the drum sounds into strange glitchy renders, which I spent a lot of time auditioning and re-arranging to try and get the right balance between form and disaster. As for the main tremolo chord sequence, that came from the simplest of simple operator and guitar rig arrangement – sometimes the simple things can still do the trick!

Mountain Clouds

So we went on this trek to the Himalayas last year during the Monsoon. We trekked on an unmarked trail right next to the Greater Himalayas, the highest mountains on Earth.
The setting is ideal for Time lapsing. The magic that the clouds create during the rainy season in the Himalayas inspired this film. Most of the time we were at an altitude of between 3000 mts to 4500 mts. We walked for around 200 kms over 4 weeks. Original music composed by the brilliant duo of Baan and Bala, better known as Be square.

"One of my dreams is to get our message everywhere. Even the people who decide, oh, they don’t like Muslims, they don’t like refugees, they don’t like immigrants, we have to change their ideas about it. And that’s our job and that’s our message. Maui on My Mind

Maui is a magical place. Enjoy a moment to experience the splendor through this peaceful Maui escape: awe-inspiring beach sunsets, radiant sunrise skies, fluid-like clouds streaming past Haleakala's 10,023 foot slopes, stunning night sky scenes, transcendent Haleakala sunrises, "breathing" tide pools, peaceful tropical waterfalls, a rainbow in Nakalele blowhole mist, iconic green sea turtles, breaching and diving humpback whales, tranquil tropical flowers, plus some surprises!

This was a five-year project, capturing Maui's beauty through time lapse scenes, real-time video, and photos during several annual Maui visits. I wanted to showcase things that were "Maui," stuff I miss when not on Maui, when I have "Maui on My Mind!"

The background music is Jeff Peterson's beautiful slack key guitar composition “Maui on My Mind” from his CD of the same name. Rather than simply playing the music behind the imagery, glimpses of Jeff's expressive performance were included to help convey the depth and soul of Maui.

Jeff describes the inspiration for writing "Maui on My Mind" as “The song was written during sunrise on a clear Maui morning. The mountain air had a chill but the sun quickly came through to warm things up and reveal views of Kaho´olawe, Lana´i, and the tip of Moloka´i in the distance. Even though I currently live on the island of Oahu and travel often outside of Hawaii to perform, music can transport me back to my family home on Maui in an instant. This song is my ticket home.”

Jeff has contributed to two Grammy Award-winning recordings and has been honored with seven Na Hōkū Hanohano Awards in Hawaii. “Maui on My Mind” was recognized as the Na Hōkū Slack Key Album of the Year in 2010 and was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2011. More about Jeff and his music is available through his website at JeffPetersonGuitar.com.

It is impossible to illustrate all that is Maui in a 4 1/2 minute video. One way to convey more is to compress time through carefully crafted time lapse scenes. This project condenses about 30,000 photos and about 100 hours of Maui time down to this short video.

Many thanks to Mark's photo assistant Jodi Ellis! In addition to helping with photographic gear on location, Jodi contributed the gorgeous sunrise whale dive scene in the video.

Border Wall as Infrastructure

Video presentation for exhibit at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. Finalist in the WPA 2.0 competition sponsored by UCLA Citylab, wpa2.aud.ucla.edu

"There exists far more potential in a construction project that is estimated to cost up to $1,325.75 per linear foot." Recognizing the high cost, limited effectiveness and unintended natural consequences of the new, multi-layered US/Mexico border wall (disruption of animal habitats, diversion of water runoff that has caused new flooding in nearby towns), this proposal names alternatives that might better combat the energy crisis, risk of death from dehydration, disruption of animal habitat, loss of vegetation, negative labor relations, missing creative vision and lack of cross-cultural appreciation likely in the government sponsored version.

Project Credits:

Rael San Fratello Architects: Ronald Rael,Virginia San Fratello, Emily Licht, Plamena Milusheva, Brian Grieb, Colleen Paz, Molly Reichert

Soundtrack: Glenn Weyant/The Anta Project: sonicanta.com

Compiled from covert performances utilizing implements of mass percussion and a cello bow to play the steel wall, barbed wire fences and assorted ephemera that separates the United States from Mexico.
