1 Day North of 46º

1 Day North of 46º is a timelapse project that I have, unknowingly, carried out over the last two years. I started shooting timelapse in 2012 and this is a collection of some of the sequences I've shot since then.

As the title suggests, all this footage was shot further north than a latitude of 46º - the video features shots from: Bergen (Norway); Walldorf, Heidelberg and Frankfurt (Germany); High Wycombe, London and the Chilterns (United Kingdom), and Zell am See (Austria). Whilst in Germany, I had the privilege to work with Johannes Valouch (who also joined me during some of the UK shoots) and Simon Mangels, two photographers from the region.

Timelapses in this video were shot primarily on a Canon EOS 60D, with some shots using a Canon EOS 500D and one sequence was shot on a RED SCARLET-X. A mixture of types of lenses were used, from standard kit lenses to L series glass.

All shots are available individually in 1080p and 4K resolutions, and many are available in original 5K resolutions.

One of the most challenging pieces in the piano repertoire, a real beast. When I was about 15 years old my mother gave me a recording of Vladimir Ashkenazy playing this famous work by Rachmaninov. Here is the absolute juiciest part: the cadenza from the 2nd movement. This one is for you Mom, I love you!

The Chernobyl Reel // Part Seven // Let's get the hell out of here

Visit chernobylreel.com for more footage. It’s been nearly 30 years since the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Follow my wife and I as we explore the city of Pripyat, the abandoned ghost town near the nuclear reactor.

Part 7:
After leaving the Pripyat amusement park, we took one last walk around the once busy streets of the city. It's eerie to see stores, offices and restaurants left as they were and abandoned in a moments notice.

We drove to the final destination at the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor. Encased in cement, the disaster within cannot be solved, only contained and carefully watched, forever.

Valentine's Aurora

With aurora season kicking off again in the northern hemisphere, here is a look back at one of the best Aurora Storms from a nine week extreme astronomy adventure in the Yukon, Canada in early 2012.

Timelapse footage captured with Canon 5D Mark II (*2) with 14mm and 24mm lenses, Canon 1100D (aka Rebel T3) with 10-22mm lens and Canon 5D with 8mm Fisheye lens. Motion control with a custom controller by Fred Vanderhaven and a Vixen Polarie. Temperature around -20C (-5F) but thankfully not much wind.

Individual RAW image sequences processed with Lightroom and LR Timelapse (to compensate for extreme changes in brightness of aurora) and rendered with Adobe After Effects (using Neat Video noise smoothing). Final compilation in this case with Sony Vegas.

This was only my second night out on location away from the house where I was staying with my hosts Andrea and Florian Lemphers, without whose generosity the whole adventure would not have been possible.

Aside from the fisheye footage, which was running autonomously at 'home', all of these sequences were captured from Annie Lake Road, south of Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, on the 14th February. The Aurora was visible even before twilight had ended, and the storm was active for several hours and frequently held me spellbound with its brightness and fast movement.

Special thanks for the music to my talented friends Dean (sound production and editing) and Dayna Roberts (violin), who also produce fine wine in South Gippsland with Lithostylis (lithostylis.com). I'm now undecided as to whether music or wine-making is the more time consuming of their passions.

Initiated from MIT Media Lab, BioLogic is our attempt to program living organism and invent responsive and transformable interfaces of the future. Nature has engineered its own actuators, as well as the efficient material composition, geometry and structure to utilize its actuators and achieve functional transformation. Based on the natural phenomenon of hygromorphic transformation, we introduce a specific type of living cells as nanoactuators that react to body temperature and humidity change. The living nanoactuator can be controlled by electrical signal and communicate with the virtual world as well. Kai

Kai is a dancer struggling to perfect her movements. She practices at home, avoids going out for drinks after training, and is endlessly chastised by her dance teacher, all to no avail. This changes when she has a collision with joy, and learns how to let go and express her pleasure freely.

Earlier this year, Magnum ice-cream teamed up with i-D to create a short film competition called "Be True To Your Pleasure", inviting emerging filmmakers to send in their short film ideas about personal pleasure and the joy of letting go. The three winners were announced in August and received funding, production support and a mentorship from award-winning filmmaker Xavier Dolan to help make their ideas reality.

"Tokyo is this futuristic-dystopian metropolis rich in tradition and modernism. My goal was to merge these two themes. Throughout the story we follow two contemporary dancers to the famous Shibuya 5-way crossing. We also observe a mysterious masked figure. This ominous mask comes from a theatrical drama called "Noh" which the Japanese have been practicing since the 14th century. The actual mask you see here is over 400 yrs old and represents an angel - passed down through generations. Today, there's just a handful left performing Noh as it solely depends on the disinterested youth to keep it alive"

ASTYPALEA

A little film of Astypalea,one of the beautiful Greek islands, filmed between a dip and a another relaxing dip.
First of all i would like to thanks my girlfriend (travel with a filmmaker can be awful!) for her patience.
All handheld and with a monopod too, shot in raw mode with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera with 24-105 lens and metabones speedbooster (no viewfinder or field monitor).

It has been a hard work because it was practically impossible to saw what I was shooting, focusing, exposuring, framing... Under the greek sun it's impossible to see nothing on the screen. It is an art work!

Shot in the morning, midday and afternoon, edited and graded by myself.

All video was shot in 60p at 1/125s and converted to 24p for slow motion. Filmed exclusively on the Sony NEX6 and most shots with the 35mm f1.8 lens (SEL35F18) - a few clips were shot using the SEL16F28 lens. Edited and graded in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Escargore

This snail horror comedy is so scary, it'll shock your shell off!

Claude and his friends are out of their element and in a whole lot of trouble when they choose the wrong lettuce for lunch. They must now find their way out of this world of horrors before they end up on the menu!

Escargore is the latest third year production from Media Design School's Bachelor of Art and Design (3D Animation and VFX). The project took around four months of intensive work to complete by a group of 22 students.
