Doha has risen out of the desert, fuelled by innovation and an energetic passion. The result is a city that has very quickly transformed from a humble pearl diving and fishing village to one of the most important and dynamic destinations in the Middle East. The Qatari capital is the base for multi-billion-dollar businesses, glamorous malls, and a myriad of attractions. Home to people from all cultural backgrounds, Doha stands out with its booming cultural diversity.

For centuries, Doha was a fishing village known for its pearl trade. The country’s pearl divers were famed for their skill in finding the largest and most perfectly formed pearls, and the original village (which was known as Al Bidda) was also a busy fishing port for generations.
With the wealth gained from the oil trade in the 20th century, Doha became one of the key commercial centres for the entire region. Today, it is the economic and metropolitan centre of the State of Qatar and an epicentre for business and finance in the Middle East.

Doha, Arabic Al-Dawḥah, city, capital of Qatar, located on the east coast of the Qatar Peninsula in the Persian Gulf. More than two-fifths of Qatar’s population lives within the city’s limits. Situated on a shallow bay indented about 3 miles (5 km), Doha has long been a locally important port. Because of offshore coral reefs and shallow waters, it handled only small vessels until the completion of its deepwater port in the 1970s.

The original quarter of the city, Al-Bidaʿ, Bida in sailor’s parlance, is at the northwest; it was probably founded by members of the Sudan tribe who emigrated from the sheikhdom of Abu Dhabi. Long a centre of pirate activity in the Persian Gulf, Doha, then a small village, was destroyed in 1867 in the war between Bahrain (which was aided by Abu Dhabi) and Qatar. In the following year the British government installed Muḥammad ibn Thānī Āl Thānī, sheikh of Doha, as the premier ruler of Qatar. He agreed to abide by the terms of the Perpetual Maritime Truce of 1853, and piracy was greatly reduced. In the late 19th century the Ottoman Empire, as suzerain of much of the Arabian Peninsula, sporadically maintained a garrison at Doha. After Qatar became a British protected state in 1916, a British political agency was maintained in the town. In late 1971 Doha became the capital of newly independent Qatar.

Long a sleepy pearling and fishing village, Doha had about 350 pearling boats at the beginning of the 20th century. The development of Japanese cultured pearls and the worldwide economic depression of the 1930s severely affected the town. The development of Qatar’s considerable oil reserves after World War II, however, led to a complete economic transformation. Qatar became an extremely prosperous country with a high per capita income and undertook the thorough modernization of its capital. Old slum sections were razed, and modern commercial and residential quarters were built. Doha’s water supply is obtained by distilling seawater. The deepwater port accommodates oceangoing vessels. The Qatar National Fishing Company, using modern motorized craft, is headquartered at the port, where a modern shrimp-packing plant also has been built.

Sites of interest include Clock Tower Square, the souk (marketplace), and Government House (1969), built on reclaimed waterfront land. Further cultural developments include the establishment of a world-class Museum of Islamic Art (2008; designed by I.M. Pei) on an island offshore. Doha International Airport is located just southeast of the city.

Imogen

I'm proud to present my newest film on Imogen Caldwell.

Imogen is a 23 year old woman from Red Bluff, Western Australia - one of the remotest regions I've ever traveled to, known for its abundance of perfect waves, Outback dust and treacherous wildlife. Over the course of a year, our adventures took us from her homebreak to the icebergs of Iceland, forests of France and the jungles of Indonesia.

IN LIMBO / NYC

IN LIMBO is a visual, abstract exploration of New York City as a relict, void of people. Skyscrapers, iconic streets and bridges left sitting - just like old tug boats, dumped in Staten Island, visually representing the uncertainty and panic during a pandemic.

Masculinities

In this film commissioned by the Barbican, NOWNESS creative director and filmmaker Bunny Kinney borrows from the exhibition’s themes to create a playful, pastel-hued, talking-heads film exploring gender roles, patriarchy and hegemonic masculinity.

"The concept was simple: to create a living document of 'masculinity now' embodied by a vibrant array of individuals," says Kinney, who interviewed 16 people whose identities span the spectrum of masculinity. "Each person featured has a different relationship to their own sense of masculinity and what that even means to them."

AS ABOVE

"As above, so below"

As Above is a short film exploring the tight link between the microscopic world and immensity of the universe.
Illustrating our universe’s never ending dance of destruction and creation, in which life can emerge...

As Above was made of one single shot filmed on the 8mm2 (0.3 square inch) surface of a chemical reaction.

The environment in which we live, is at the constant mercy of the ever changing flow of planets, stars and galaxies... As well as the composition of the microscopic world.
“As Above” is an invitation to contemplate the beauty of this perpetual movement of which we are part of... And perhaps invite the viewer to reflect on his position in the universe and the preciosity of life.

In the same ways, recent events have shown us that a microscopic virus could have a destructive
impact on humanity... A destructive impact counter weighted by a positive impact on our planets
global ecosystem.

Golden Harvest

**Please note**
I firmly believe that this video utilises all music under the 'fair use' policy in addition to being non-commercial, educational, parody, a news item about a current event and enhancing the value of the original music benefitting the original talent without negatively affecting it's revenue elsewhere. A DMCA takedown notice was successfully challenged with a counter notification. I wish to share this film again which was made 10 years ago now at time of immense anxiety and stress to give some positive vibes and hope. I am proud to have done this a few years ago in Syria where it was widely shown.

Our experience of our Harvest to share especially with you, shot with both the GH1 and the new iPhone4. Look out for the timelapse shot with the iPhone, attached to the DIY Tractor dolly with lego and blue tack.

I had full faith in my very dear friend who was driving the combine Harvester. I'm really grateful to the team of farmers who have worked around the clock, the Granary where the Wheat is finally sent, my family and Mother Nature in making this film who put up with me whilst I was shooting all of this. There was alot of material and this film is just over 6 minutes long, so please feel free to download it and watch it at your leisure. I hope you like the music, after 'Love Madrid' I'm hooked on the Spanish Guitar, very inspirational. Please sit back, relax and enjoy! :)

7 Survivors- Hibakujumoku

My initial interest in creating time-lapse work stemmed from my painting. I found that I wanted to capture the movement of the light. Watching a beat up Samizdat VHS copy of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi projected on the crumbling wall of a squat in Prague in the 90’s gave me the idea I could do this with film. I started filming on a Minolta Super-8 camera that had an intervalometer built in with Kodachrome and Tri-X film that could be processed in Prague. I created installation loops with super-8 projectors that were nightmares to manage, but looked fantastic. It was not until I was a graduate student at the University of Washington at the end of the previous century that I was able to collect and digitize my super-8 film. With After Effects I could create a collage of the vision I had held in my mind’s eye for some years.

Since then I have continued to shoot time-lapse in film, and then with a procession of digital cameras starting with the Nikon D200. Currently my camera of choice is a D750, with its wicked sensor that has such a smooth dynamic range. I always try to shoot with primes, mostly using a Nikkor 24mm. I have found that as my eye has matured I no longer crave the widest of the crazy wide-angle lenses available, although I do like to play with full spherical fisheyes, and lust after Tilt-shift lenses.

I have been traveling to Hiroshima for the past 4 years to photograph and create time-lapses of the Hibaku Jumoku, or survivor trees of Hiroshima. These trees were burnt down during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima August 6th, 1945. Amazingly for the denuded metropolis, the Hibaku Jumoku brought out new growth in the following years and survive today.

Hackberry tree
Hackberry tree
When I lived and worked in the Czech Republic I was able to visit many historical sites in Central Europe. Once I was visiting the Czech “model” concentration camp at Terezenstadt. I was watching a film about the terrible history of the place and the young German students who were there with me were twittering nervously. I remember thinking in my schadenfreude, these terrible Germans, what a stain on their history.

For a U.S. citizen, visiting Hiroshima is a direct slap on any notion of being the “exceptional” nation, the necessary leader of the “free” world. What took the Germans several months in Auschwitz and the other death camps, we U.S. Americans could do in an instant: vaporize ~80,000 souls, and leave tens of thousands of others to die slow painful deaths. There is still a great debate over whether the bombing was necessary, if it caused the Japanese to capitulate more quickly or if it was the Soviet Union’s entry into the war that finally brought Japan to surrender.

Willow Tree
Willow Tree
Regardless of this there is the horror of the act of A-bombing civilian populations. The thoughtlessness, and the inevitability of the meat grinder that is the Military Industrial complex must wipe away any traditional self-regard for Yanks to be the white hats, or the good guys. We are just as good or evil as anyone else.

I feel that by contemplating these trees we can remember our histories. By basking in the glow of the light as it processes through the time-lapse we can gain resilience as we see the strength and endurance of the trees. We can also receive some humility thinking of the time-scale that some of these trees have lived.

Pussy Willow, within the fortifications of the Samurai Castle.
Pussy Willow, within the fortifications of the Samurai Castle.
The last tree in the series is a Willow tree near the Hiroshima Castle that was the headquarters of the Japanese Expeditionary forces that subjugated Korea and much of China during World War 2. After the bomb was dropped, a U.S. POW was tied to the burnt remnants of this tree
to die.

We must remember these historical facts. We must not pretend as we continue to use our technology for destruction. We must take responsibility: we must sometimes keep technology from being used. The present possibility of nuclear destruction is the easiest of the technological problems we face as a global civilization.

The trees are witness to the speed with which humankind may destroy. Sit down beside these trees on the 75th year commemoration of their destruction and revival. One thing that will help is to slow down… and think.

Adidas Superstar 50th Anniversary

It’s already been 50 years since the streetwear legend Adidas Superstar was born. It seems like a good moment to remember its bright game-changing, team-working spirit.

We were invited to participate in this celebration by Hypebeast and The Others, who asked us to direct and produce this project. We wanted to truly convey the classic casual-sporty Superstar nature, yet updating the campaign to a more urban look and feel. We had the lucky chance to shoot with the actor, singer and dancer Jackson Yee and his incredible crew of dancers, whose street style not only gave us the contemporary mood we were looking for but also provided us the group element we had approached to depict a collective mindset.

Our main challenge was to blend live-action footage with the graphic universe we had proposed. We achieved it by using complex and seamless transitions that organically merged the characters with the animation world. In order to highlight the urban atmosphere and also to soften the interaction between live action and cel animation, we decided to include some FX on the dancers so to include a subtle digital touch. We finally tied everything up by adding some wild and frenetic type animations. This project bespeaks a modern and contemporary approach on how typography, live action and animation not only live together but also merge and interact, playing with the flexibility and adaptability of all the elements.

are You there | short

A short film about isolation in a big city where two people connect in their imaginative space.

Its a passion project we did in NY last autumn. We used high ISO to be able to shoot in low key environments and played with colorful spills. We wanted the image to have a ‘’wet’' feel to highlight lonely environments of both characters. The analogue film to me is an irreplaceable medium. You can always see the physicality in the grain and textures. Above all it has this specific workflow - it magnifies the moment you are about to shoot and adds an additional spark for the crew and cast members.
