LANZAROTE | THE WONDER

Raw. Mineral. Bewitchingly. These three words describe perfectly the atmosphere that we could feel on Lanzarote in the Canary archipelago off the coast of Morocco.
Far from the crowd that can be everywhere on Lanzarote (sometimes), we have found preserved and totally uninhabited places there. It's this side that we wanted to explore. The soul of its landscapes, of this volcanic lands, between dark rock, stormy ocean and wonderful nature.

THE RETREAT

It was time to escape. We were done. Tapped out.

A week of festivities during the contest in France with an embarrassingly small amount of surfing had us refocused on what actually matters, so we left for Portugal. The Algarve. We gathered a merry crew: Chippa Wilson, Brendon Gibbens and Noah Collins. We rented a team manager and a van and hit the road.

Oh the Algarve!

Such warmth, such affordable prices. The Algarve is a dream. It is a west coast to pick up swell and a south coast to shelter you. The early days of the trip were marred by inconsistent swell and wind. Too big for the west coast. Too small for the south. Not to worry. We kill time. We eat. We sunbathe. We drink. We Scroll. We dip into Lagos. Inhibitions are loosened.

The swell arrives – a return to normal programming. The west and the south. The west is modor-esq black cliffs in the cloud and the south is novelty beachbreaks with the most marvellous of backdrops in the sun. In true fashion, Portugal delivers and we surf until the very last smudge of light over the Atlantic, and as the inky blackness descends we clink Super Bocks and with weary eyes we reluctantly pack the van. It was time to head north. For some would stay in Portugal. Others would head to France. Others to LA. Others to Japan. Wetsuits still wet on arrival in Shibuya.

The Retreat.

NVSHU

For hundreds of years, women in China’s agricultural province of Hunan have kept a language hidden from the world. Mothers and sisters would communicate with each other in an exclusive writing system called Nushu. Unintelligible to men, this secret language gave women the power to express their sadness and hopes in an era that barred them from political and social life.

This film is an evocative visual tapestry of this history.

Floating Dreams

Education is the passport to the future ; Tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Access to Education comes served on a platter for the Urban Dwellers and it may seem rather inconsequential, to appreciate the privilege of it.

But there's the other section of the society - one's that gets so entangled in making ends meet, these wonderful beings in the rural corners, for whom the reach of education doesn't come easy. Rather these souls put in their heart and soul to absorb and garner every tiny drop of education they can hold on to. For them education is the only weapon to transform their life for better.

I have always been fascinated by the kids on the banks of Chandubi. Landlocked by wide pristine lakes and lacking suitable fast access infrastructure, their only means of getting from point A to B is by crossing the lake rowing a boat. During each of my visit, I would watch in amusement on how these kids cycle to the shore and then row the boat across and further cycle for about 10kms to finally make it to their school. I did try to freeze the same as photos but I always felt images were unable to convey the emotion that I was witnessing.

This time incidently, I visited Chandubi with a clear objective. To document it all on video. I spent two days shooting, with Satarupa Rabha as the main character. A class 10th student - with dreams of becoming a singer, she was charming and buzzing with an attitude thats so refreshing and positive towards life. "I only cycle 10kms each day to school - other kids cycle for more than 20kms" she said - as if her efforts were miniscule. We - the urban zombies - for sure have a lot to learn from these little pristine vestiges of India.

Julie & I

An anti-fashion film about two co-dependent friends living in fantasy, with one of them sometimes taking it too far. Shot on super 16mm and 8mm film, it’s inspired by French New Wave and is a metaphor for co-dependent friendships that turn toxic for the same reasons that made them beautiful. We intentionally borrowed a lot of imagery from videos and fashion films that we loved, to create a visual post-modern landscape crafted from contemporary video tastes. The goal was to also comment on some of today’s over-emphasis on aesthetic also going a little too far for the same reasons that make them so beautiful.

Budapest - Solo Travelers Eye 4K

I have been postponing the release of this video forever due to hyper perfectionism. I've shot this video back in June 2019 and finished the edit in a week but I was too afraid to release it because weeks after I felt like I could've done so much better.

This was a 4-day solo trip to Budapest where I've met so many amazing people. All of you were asking me when this video is going to be released so I feel like I owe you guys this one.

My filming career started at the beginning of 2019 so it was still a lot of exploring. I feel like I've learned so much down the road so I will be coming back to Budapest in the summer of 2020 to finish where i've started.

Lots of love to all the amazing people I've met in Budapest and I'll see you this summer.

Clueso - Wie Versprochen (Official Video)

I was invited to produce the new music video for the German musician "Clueso". What we usually do in a big team was kept deliberately small this time. For the new clip to "Wie Versprochen" we were only three people. Clueso (alias Thomas Hübner), Christopher Schmid and myself. The whole album ("Handgepäck") was wrote and recorded while traveling.

Clueso himself writes the following (quote):
"One of my most beautiful music videos is being released today. It's proof that you can do things by yourself. Beginning with the recordings of the song, to the production up to this audiovisual work. The video was only made by the three of us. Dennis Schmelz, Christopher Schmid and me. Dennis collected recordings for this little film for over a year and you can definitely see that. It's supposed to reflect the incredible number of trips I've taken all over the world, even the ones where the camera wasn't there and this incredibly beautiful feeling of being on the road, to be inspired by the wonderful places on this planet."

We spent three days of filming in South Tyrol. One of the highlights was the filming on the mighty Seceda rock face and the probably most famous Instagram spot: The Braies Lake. We were all at this magical place for the first time and are still totally enthusiastic about this beauty of nature. Of course, you never have such places solely to yourself, the spot is now known worldwide and totally overcrowded. Even before sunrise, dozens of photographers were cavorting in front of the boathouse directly at the lake. For the shooting we rented the boathouse and therefore had the great privilege to take pictures with a rowing boat all alone at sunrise.

Bunny

She’s an actress, she’s a sex symbol, she’s a superstar, she’s my mother. Sandie "The Goddess Bunny" Crisp is the last truly glamorous star left in Hollywood…

Born in Santa Monica, CA, stricken with polio, the transgender cult diva is a she-devil on six wheels. She’s a ballerina with a perfect pirouette and it wouldn't be hard to find her in a gold lamé dress belting love ballads to garbage men or liquor store clerks.

This is my love letter to her. I love you, mom.

Long semi-circular lecture halls are graced by grand skylights that face interconnected terraces and hidden mezzanines. Song by Bullet & Cass: “The Way You Do" // http://bit.ly/TheWayYouDoITunes // http://bit.ly/TheWayYouDo // bulletandcass.com/

Follow me: mikeolbinski.com / twitter.com/mikeolbinski / instagram.com/mikeolbinski

A couple years ago I made a black and white time-lapse film just for fun, and now here we are with the third installment in the series. It's a way to play around in the winter months with something new and different, get creative and also help pass the time until spring returns!

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with this one, and couldn't even find the perfect song for it, until the duo Bullet & Cass emailed me about wanting to use my footage for their upcoming debut single. I get a lot of those kinds of emails, so I didn't think much of it...until I clicked on the preview links for their two tracks...and wow, I was blown away by how much I loved "The Way You Do." A few seconds into the song, I was immediately laying down tracks to it in my head. I listened all the way to the end and knew I had found my song. We did a straight up trade...footage for the track, and the editing began in earnest.

After I finished editing back in November, I needed a title. It took me weeks. The song has a sort of folksy haunting old west vibe to it (at least to me) and I needed the perfect name to go along with it. I finally pulled up a list of old west terms and when I stumbled across Reverent...I knew it was the one. Not only did it sound and feel right, but it actually is how I feel standing out there a lot. These storms are powerful and deadly, and sometimes you are just staring out at them with this deep respect and admiration for what you are witnesses. Or perhaps, in my case, for the one who created it.

I hope you enjoy this film as much as I do. All footage in it is from 2019, with some unseen monsoon clips in there as well. Definitely felt like it was taking a risk on the song choice itself, especially as lyrics aren't my normal deal. But I love it, love it, love it and I hope you do too! And if you do, please visit the links up top and buy the single and check out their website!

Technical Details:

Everything shot with two Canon 5DSRs and various Canon lenses. A couple lightning sequences with the Sony A7R3

All clips available in 8K Resolution

Processed in Lightroom, LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.
