NORWAY|The space in between - Shot on BMPCC 4k

I shot this in the summer of 2019 in Norway. We drove from Denmark to Norway and spend a week roadtripping around, visiting places we had researched on beforehand. But sometimes we would also just stumble upon a beautiful place and go explore it. This was also the week that all of europe experienced exceptional weather and we were lucky enough that it lasted the whole trip.

The film is shot on BMPCC 4K and the drone footage is the Mavic 2 pro. I primarily used the sigma 18-35.

The beautiful music is by Jon Hopkins - Abandon Window.

The film was edited and graded in DaVinci Resolve.

Max Cooper - Circular

Stream/download 'Yearning for the Infinite': ffm.to/yearningfortheinfinite

Páraic McGloughlin:
I've had the idea to make some type of version of this video for about ten years, for whatever reason I haven't had the chance to get it done until now.
When I heard 'Circular' for the first time and read the statement about it, as well as the combined ideas for 'Yearning for the infinite', I immediately thought that this is a place where this video idea could work. After some discussion with Max we got going on it..

This project was definitely a labour of love and I enjoyed every bit of it!

The idea for the video initially came from a thought about Obsession (the vicious cycle.)
I think we often find ourselves getting caught up in routines, letting small problems become unnecessarily overwhelming and consuming so much of our time.It seems so easy to let this happen. At the same time I think it is often some form of obsession that drives people to do what they love, find people they love etc, it's quite a strange old thing...

Using the Circle as a symbol of an inescapable and never ending notion, I tried to evoke a feeling of the infinite, and the idea of a reoccurring and self made predicament...
I used circles as the main subject matter as circles have an infinite symmetry, they can be rotated by any amount and always look the same, they’re the only 2D shape with infinite symmetry. It's amazing how a simple circle can be so complicated! I suppose there is a reason why the circle is one of the classic representations of infinity. Also I really love the shape:)

The video required quite a bit of planning, location hunting and measuring things up etc.
I had a nice surprise with how much I enjoyed being out (mainly on my own) painting huge circles on the quiet barren terrain, much more fun than it sounds:). (for me)

A huge thanks to my Dad who actually took on a role as a Grip!
Thanks to my brother Kevin for helping with shooting!

Thanks so much to Max Cooper for involving me in this project.

Max Cooper:
The circle with its infinite degrees of rotational symmetry, endless path structure, and seemingly endless statistically random digits of pi, was a key visual form in the project where I was looking for ways to visualise the infinite. Paraic McGloughlin had a great idea for bringing in the human side of the story as well, with his human stuck in their loop with a touch of insanity about the whole thing. I love the balance between the delivery of the concept and the surrounding scenes, like the two shouldn't be combined, but somehow it turns out beautifully.

I went for a curving form of musical structure. A slow and smooth melodic pulse which had its own rhythm, but which I could also play at my own pace. It just seemed to embody circular form to me, hopefully you can hear what I’m talking about!

With this in place I set about making my first almost entirely improvised piece of music, I think I only added a single bass and pad element, and a couple of sound design additions to complete it after extracting the entire piece as a live recording. This gives it a much more fluid structure and melodic form than is normal for my music, which is one of the main differences throughout the album from those which have come previously. It was certainly a nice way to work on a personal level, and something I’m continuing to explore.

Paraic has delivered something of a masterpiece for his visual interpretation. Something like 170 hand drawn circles of epic proportion telling the story of human obsession quite literally as well as metaphorically. It puts a big smile on my face to see this, hats off to Paraic McGloughlin and Kevin McGloughlin for their beautiful art and for allowing me to be part of it.

The Golden Harvest - 4K Aerial Video from North Vietnam

Beautiful golden rice terraces and green tea hills - welcome to North Vietnam. After a 10 hours car ride from Hanoi through the Vietnamese mountains I finally arrived at the beautiful rice terraces of Mu Cang Chai. The long journey was worth it - I’ve never seen something like this before. The rice has already colored from green to yellow and is ready for the harvest - glad that I made it to this place while the „golden season“.

Office Cat and Fish - Time For Coffee

These two unlikely colleagues are sitting in the office doing over-hours. Bored and frustrated by a software that keeps crashing only a strong cup of coffee can help now…
We highly enjoyed working on Office Cat & Fish and it quickly became a darling project of the studio.
It was as well a great project to test our fur setup, and bring that to a level we were happy with.
A tactile feel of the characters was very important for us.

The Idea

As part of our long-running short films initiative, we pitched the question to our team "Can you visualise the frustrations of the creative process?" So we organised some brainstorming sessions on the problems with brainstorming sessions, had committee meetings on the pains of design by committee, and bounced ideas around about how we bounce ideas around. Embracing a minimal design language to focus on the characterisation, we created a short film which is a montage of relatable scenarios for the creative professional.

THE ARRIVAL

THE ARRIVAL is a film about loss, tragedy, and climate change. During the Woolsey Fires in 2018, internationally renowned installation, environmental land artist LITA ALBUQUERQUE lost her home/studio, and archives dating back to the 1960s.

This traumatic event happened at the same time as the birth of her first grandson, Abe (experiencing both life & death simultaneously). Jasmine her daughter (who appears as the Queen) was 8 months pregnant during the fires and recently moved home.

Through this visual opera, we created a surreal performance, dance, music art film, telling the story of Abe (Lita's grandson) returning home for the first time.

In many ways, all the characters are children, existing in this post-apocalyptic world awaiting the Queen (Jasmine) and her baby (Abe). These performers worship the child as if he will one day be king/rule the kingdom. We decided to document this moment through a choreographed performance amongst the ashes of this tragedy.

SELF 05: A Night In Shanghai

Known for producing films that careen from martial arts epics to romantic comedies with enigmatic plotlines, Chinese director Wong Kar Wai curates the fifth installment of SELF, a multidisciplinary arts project conceived by Saint Laurent Artistic Director Anthony Vaccarello. Like its predecessors, A Night In Shanghai evokes the fashion house’s attitude of confidence, individuality and self-expression. Directed by Wing Shya, one of Hong Kong’s leading photographers, this is a story about one woman’s search for self-actualization as she, literally and figuratively, walks a tightrope between her true and performative selves.

TULUM

Two years ago I went on a client shoot for a day in Tulum, I just felt in love with the destination, I wanted to go back. So I did finally go back with my Love last week of January 2019. We had an amazing week, the area of Tulum is full of marvellous and gorgeous little places. The beachs are some of the best in the world, the food is amazing and everything is available from a bicking distance.

All of this video was filmed on a DJI Osmo Pocket and a Sony a6500 with a sony/zeiss 16-70mm f4 lens. Music is an original composition I made on my way back home on FL Studio Mobile.
