Our systems vary from city to city, county to county, but in general the core directive seems to hinge on the negation of individuality, the stripping away of personal identity. Making people nameless, thinking of them as just one of many, allows us to treat them without humanity. We often use this de-individualizing approach with our soldiers, prisoners, factory workers, illegal immigrants… these people begin not to matter, the more they don’t matter, the more we renounce our responsibility to them. We abandon any attempts of recognition, rehabilitation, and integration. Over and over we just round up, contain or detain, and cut loose.

FOUNTAIN is an atmospheric meditation on these practices, prompted by a feeling more than a statement.
