As Much as I Can - NOWNESS

American director and cinematographer John Schmidt presents a powerful documentary recreation, filmed on location in Baltimore and Jackson Mississippi, that explores the feelings—from hope to despair—of sufferers of AIDS, at a time when the HIV rates of African American men are rising to newly epidemic levels.Based on a play of the same name, Schmidt’s film attempts to bring viewers into the minds of sufferers who experience not only physical risks and symptoms, but also social pressures and stigmas. Explaining his approach to this emotive subject matter, the filmmaker explains: “I didn’t want the film to come across as preachy or overtly depressing. I wanted to celebrate the strength and resilience of the men involved—acknowledging health, mortality, and future happiness while struggling with a changing personal and social identity.”
