Ladakh - A Time lapse Journey

With India in Motion, my goal is to showcase the incredible beauty of India through time lapse videos.

Here is the first instalment towards fulfilling that goal. A time lapse showcase of Ladakh. I spent 3 months in Ladakh (6 weeks in Autumn and 6 weeks in the Winter) shooting these videos.

I do this on a shoe string budget. Spending around 300 Rupees (~5$) a day. In Autumn, I traveled around Ladakh on my motorbike and in the Winter I hiked and hitchhiked my way through this wonderful land. It was a lot of fun!. I camp a lot, both to minimize costs and to be at the right location at the right time, and stay in village homestays wherever I can. The warmth and generosity of the Ladakhi hospitality is an inspiration for all of us to emulate.

It is a long video. I tried to make it interesting by arranging these sequences based on their location.

Some major locations like Nubra and Zanskar are missing. The weather during the fall was not ideal (it was the time of the Srinagar floods). The winter sequences are short. I had to keep them short while shooting in order to save my camera batteries and also my fingers and toes!

Technically, it has issues too. First off are the hot pixels that are stuck to the frames during the night timelapses. And there is quite a bit of flicker too when the scenes transition from Day to Night. I tried my best to remove them, but the flickr is still there. So yeah, the video is not perfect. Life never is. All we can do is to keep on improving.
My next goal is to cover Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. I'am currently in Manali working on this and a few other things.

I am traveling full time to shoot these videos. If you like these videos and would like to support me, please consider donating a dollar or two at my Patreon funding page. Every little contribution helps.

Copenhagers: REMEMBER BERLIN

''REMEMBER BERLIN'' a copenhagers.com narrative short film

#rememberberlin

/// WHAT /// WHY /// HOW ///

On April 21st 2015 I was in Berlin for work; in the afternoon I found my self free for a few hours and I took a stroll down the beautiful German capital. I brought my camera with me; there was no plan on making a movie out of these very limited 4 hours trip but I suddenly felt once more the urge to share the history, knowledge, awareness and inner beauty that this city and it's heritage has to offer.

/// LISTEN ///

Please listen carefully; take 3 minutes out of your day to immerse your self into this audio/visual journey. The film contains an extract of the famous J.F. KENNEDY Berlin speech accompanied by Yann Tiersen's gem. You would be surprised to see and hear how relevant this still is at this very day.

/// CAMERA ///

The whole film was shot on a SONY A7s, handheld, 60fps 40% slowed down in post

Lenses:
Sony 18-105mm f4 (in APS-C)

Everest - A Tribute to the Fallen

Imagine a 1500 ft tidal wave of snow, rock and debris headed straight towards you. This was our reality on April 25th, 2015 at Mt. Everest basecamp when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake triggered a massive avalanche at Mt. Everest Basecamp that claimed 16 lives and critically injured 50+ men and women.

"I shot as much as I could before putting the cameras down to help the critically injured and wounded. 16 people lost their lives including my friend Dan Fredinburg - a man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. I did my best as a filmmaker to document the process even though my heart was bleeding from the loss of life. As much as I tried to pretend I was ok, I simply was not. A part of me died that day. I was in shock.

For the next 3 days, I documented the rescue efforts from 17,500 ft above sea level. Over 50 people were successfully evacuated and over 70 rescued from high above the mountain.

Drained, exhausted and sick from neglecting to take care of myself, I secluded myself in my tent while on Everest and proceeded to edit to the best of my ability, an honest portrayal of the events through our team’s eyes. It took me a long time to ‘feel’ the piece, to select the right music and to establish the correct tone. In the end, I stayed up until 1:27am, 3 days after the Earthquake, completing the edit. My internet upload speed was 21kb/sec, which was incredibly painful.

It’s important to remember that this is only a single perspective, many others will have experienced far greater devastation than us. We salute all of the brave men and women who stepped up in the moment to come to the aid of their fellow human beings. It was a herculean effort on the part of hundreds to rescue, recover and evacuate those affected.

My heart goes out to my friend Dan Fredinburg, may your soul rest in peace.

Katmandu: Before the Quake

Katmandu's ancient sites were woven into the vibrant social and religious fabric of the city. Made of brick and timber, many of these iconic buildings were lost in the earthquake that rocked Nepal.

"Katmandu, Before the Quake," is something akin to a visual eulogy to the human and cultural loss from the April 25 earthquake in Nepal. The short film pays tribute to Kathmandu's cultural diversity, beauty and shows what life was like in the temples, just weeks before they fell.

I debated weather or not to make this — but I hope that by in doing so, some of these places that are no longer there, will not only be digitally preserved, but also give inspiration and hope to rebuild.

In the meantime, find out where you can help here: http://ift.tt/1zdp77j

AIR Project | Produced by Vincent Laforet | Directed by Lucas Gilman | www.LAFORETAIR.com

AIR is a project born of my need to share an important lesson I’ve discovered over the past decade making aerial photographs: the world is much smaller than we think. Borders are irrelevant and distances shortened. Clearly, we are more intimately connected to one another than we may realize.
AIR is a once a lifetime experience for our team and I’d like to pay that passion and excitement forward with as many of you as possible.
I chose the title AIR because it’s something we all share and are all equally responsible for. By definition AIR doesn’t belong to anyone. It belongs to us all regardless of background, social status and origin, as does this project.
I want to invite you to share your stories and come together at a series of meet ups* we are organizing in each new city that we travel to thanks to everyone one of you who has supported AIR and a few visionary sponsors* (including G-Tech & Storehouse) who have helped this project take flight.
I sincerely hope you will share in the joy of AIR. I hope these images make you smile, or think, or feel for just a moment a little more connected to somebody you’ve yet to meet. Please spread this experience with others.
Will you take the next step and become directly involved in telling your stories of your cities?
A few of you will be invited to fly with us over your cities and many of you will be invited to join us for pre-flight meet ups in each city that we visit, this project will reach its full potential only once you share YOUR stories about your lives, those close to you, and your city with others around the world.
Finally, you always have the option to directly support the project by visiting the store on this site as the majority of those funds will directly go towards helping us visit more cities and continue to share Air with with everyone.
If you made it this far, I guess I can safely say: Welcome aboard to project AIR!
Sincerely - Vincent Laforet

PHENAKISTOMIXER 3.0

Phenakistoscope was an early animation device that used a spinning disk of sequential images and the persistence of vision principle to create an illusion of motion. Original phenakistoscope discs had slits cut into them and had to be viewed using a mirror. Phenakistomixer appropriates this by precisely synchronising disc rotation with the shutter of a video camera to achieve similar effect, and is used as a live visual performative tool.

Phenakistomixer version 3.0 is inspired by early 30s visual synthesizer Variophone in which optical sensor linearly scans monochromatic plates and translates reflected light intensity to sound waves.

Reflections from Uyuni

Reflections from Uyuni is a Time-lapse short film that shows the intrinsic beauty of the sea salt of Uyuni and the province of Potosí in Bolivia.
The reflections produced by the water flooding in the rainy season, are the main protagonist Enrique Pacheco´s camera, who invites us to dream with impossible images from another world, where the sky meets the earth forming an infinite mirage.

The sea salt of Uyuni with over 10,000km2 is the largest in the world. It is located in the province of Potosi, Bolivia, near the Andes, at an altitude of 3.656m.
The Salar of Uyuni serves as a transport route through the Altiplano of Bolivia, but tourism has an increasingly more important role in the area.

The film and its footage is available for license in HD and 4K UHD.

The Chernobyl Reel // Part Two // A door was left open

Visit chernobylreel.com for more footage.

It’s been nearly 30 years since the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Follow my wife and I as we explore the city of Pripyat, the abandoned ghost town near the nuclear reactor.

Part 2:
After navigating our way to the top of the tallest building in Pripyat, we take a moment to view the broken landscape that was once a bustling and modern city. On the way back down, we take our time opening doors and exploring the abandoned apartments.

Thanks for watching the Chernobyl Reel,
Christiaan and Kseniya Welzel

A Film by Black Daughters: Joy Postell "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" (Acoustic)

Accompanied by guitarist Steve Francell, singer Joy Postell delivers the record carrying Baltimore soul in her spirit. Compelled by the protests occurring across the states and in her hometown, "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" illustrates the brutality in musical form.

Joy Postell:

“I wrote ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’ to shed light and to give honor to the countless victims of police brutality. From Emmett Till, Rodney King to Michael Brown and Freddie Gray, it seems as though not much has changed. These protests reflect the amount of rage bubbling in black communities, and for me, I believe that music is one of the most powerful forms of dialogue that we have. So, I wrote the song with the intent to paint the picture of oppression against black people that has been perpetuated throughout American history. It’s time for us to unite and extend a helping hand to our fellow brothers and sisters in need.”
