Asia Alive - A Southeast Asia Travel Video
What is a life well-lived? That is the question I have been pondering for quite some time now, and looking back through my years of traveling, I have come to realize how lucky I was to be able to experience so much during those times, just in Southeast Asia alone.
5 years in the making, Asia Alive is a travel video that will take you to 9 countries (Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Timor Leste, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia) through one of the most beautiful and diverse region in the world, Southeast Asia, to discover the true meaning of a life well-lived.
For this travel video, I'm going a different route than my usual travel videos as this video will focus almost entirely on the experience of traveling in Southeast Asia, not the location. So you can expect to see less beautiful sceneries and architecture as you come to expect from my travel videos and more on the interaction with the world around me.
I hope you will find this travel video refreshing to watch and hopefully it will inspire you to visit Southeast Asia and live your life to the fullest.
Enjoy!
P.S. Unfortunately, no Vietnam as I lost all my footages when my bag got stolen in 2015
Location: Laos (Vientiane, Vang Vieng), Indonesia (Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Karimunjawa, Flores), Thailand (Koh Phangan, Koh Lipe, Khaosok National Park, Lampang, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Borneo), Brunei, Myanmar (Bagan), Cambodia (Siem Reap), Singapore, Philippines (Legazpi, Donsol, Palawan), and Timor Leste.

PATHFINDER - Life Beyond Fear
Pathfinder is a tale about the human spirit.
The film follows six world-class slackliners (Highliners) on a mission deep into the Norwegian mountains to attempt something that's never been seen before: Walking a thin line, elevated in the vastness between two colossal cliffs, illuminated only by the mystical northern lights.
The yearning that drives adventurers and explorers to climb the highest peaks, sail endless oceans, and cross vast deserts in the name of progress, is the same passion that drives these slack-liners to attempt what has still been unclaimed.
Through the extreme conditions and endless challenges, we learn about their elemental desire to explore the limits of humankind.

A LOCKDOWN LULLABY
This film is about the magic and madness of lockdown, as seen through the eyes of my 6 year old boy, Dylan.
Kids have a new-normal that, from what I can tell, is equal parts confusing and amazing. Dylan put it best “Things are pretty weird right now… but also kind of awesome”.
Filmed solo, with no crew during the Covid 19 Lockdown in early May 2020.

BORN LIKE A BULLET
"Born Like a Bullet" is a collaboration project which combines poetry, dance, music & film, all in one, with the objective of creating awareness of our heritage and human rights. Like our black brothers, we have faced social discrimination and constant harassment by certain political figures. We´ve had enough. This must stop now and this is our way of protest. We want to let the world know that we are proud of being latinos.

A Tribute To The Conversation (1974)
Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece The Conversation revolves around a surveillance expert (Gene Hackman, as Harry Caul) and the moral dilemma he faces when his recordings reveal a potential murder.
This is my tribute to a film that I consider one of Coppola's finest and combines powerful concepts such as murder, religion, privacy, surveillance and morality in a perfectly crafted piece. I took many licenses when depicting the period technology and elements used in the film, as my goal was to establish a contemporary point of view on a true classic, perhaps also working as a title sequence for an imaginary remake.

Seasons & Skyscapes - Central Otago
For more than two years now, I have lived in the stunningly beautiful region of Central Otago, New Zealand. I moved there with the sole aim of capturing the stunning landscapes and clear night skies with time-lapse.
Up to now, I have not produced a reel that truly showcases Central Otago. The 12 scenes in this short movie I've titled 'Seasons and Skyscapes' are only some of what the region has to offer.
Thanks for your likes, comments and shares. They are greatly appreciated :)

In My Particular Case
How to choose an idea among so many others? This seems to be an endless question. This short film by Chico Jofilsan is a parody of that particular moment that seems further from us every single day: the idea of the perfect idea. In a world in which focus no longer stands out dispersion occupies the foreground. And this is the main theme of this film that shows different resources of animation in adapting to the rhythm of our minds. After all, what other art, if not animation, is capable of shaping so many imaginary worlds?

Chaetophobia
Director Benjamin Madgwick collaborates with hairstylist Claire Moore in a project that tests the audience’s comfort levels by inserting hair into unusual and disturbing places. What began as a conversation about a photographic project looking at ways to challenge beauty norms quickly evolved into a film that tips the scale from glorification to revulsion...

Assorted Rides | Devon Howard
"Assorted Rides" is comprised of a few sessions in California where I met up with a surfer I’ve really enjoyed watching over the years. Devon Howard’s approach to surfing inspired the feel of this short—a modern classic. In preparation for this project, I pored over old surf photograpahy books with works by guys like LeRoy Grannis and Ron Stoner. They are photographers that captured moments and told stories through the use of dramatic backlighting and color accents compressed through a manual focus telephoto lens that—when complimented by the grain of film—produced a timeless image. My hope is the short film does two things: 1.) Makes you want to go surfing right now! 2.) To record a moment in time which represents what I think is Devon's best surfing to date, at age 46 no less.
And if curious about what’s going on under his feet, here's what Devon had to say about the boards and the type of surfing we filmed:
"After a few decades of goofing off in the surf, I’ve whittled down what I ride most into two distinct camps—both of which are an obvious extension of the waves, culture and characters where I’ve lived all these years. For the cruisey, under shoulder high days (which there are many), I find classic style single-fin longboards (9’9 to 10’) with a '66 Australian bent are hard to beat. When conditions finally push shoulder high on up to double overhead, my plan shapes dip down a few feet to a range of mostly egg-inspired outlines (6’10 - 7’2”), and the rails, bottom contours and fin set-ups take on a much more revved up form.
I dig how these two design groupings allow an easy transition from one to the next (thank you low rocker and generous volume), but offer discernible shifts in speed, accessibility to different parts of the wave, and maximize the available space on the face. This film short by Florida's Drew Miller captures the back and forth pacing between long and mid sized equipment, the decisions for which are primarily driven by equal parts attitude and surf conditions.
There is absolutely nothing new here in terms of a "horses for courses" approach (thank you Nat Young, Skip Frye, etc), but although well into my mid 40s, I’m still passionate about learning what works, what doesn’t, then plugging that back into the never ending design loop. The stoke for staying on the surf prowl explains why the boards and the ride itself just keeps getting better.”
Thank you for watching,
Drew Miller

MAY GRAY, JUNE GLOOM
It feels as if the world has been turned upside down. The sun doesn't shine anymore, it just goes through the motions like a goddamn traffic light. And every day is the same day but with a different name tag and "tomorrow" might as well be next week or next month or next year.
Elijah McClain played his violin for stray cats because he wanted to comfort them. I can't help but wonder if those cats are gonna miss him. Or if they'll ask themselves why he doesn't come around anymore, or if they'll feel lonely without him. I wish I had a chance to hear his music.
The world is a wretched and miserable piss pot and it feels as if we're barely dipping our toes into just how much pain and suffering there truly is out there. And it's just getting so damn hard to feel hopeful about anything anymore. But I want to. I really do.
I see the people in the street and the people doing their best to just do their best and they all give me this cautious feeling that maybe things can get better. Maybe not tomorrow, or next week, or next month. But someday, I hope.

City Til I Die
The Northern Guard Supporters are arguably the most passionate group of sports fans in the United
States. They stand and sing every second of the match. They set off thick, tear inducing smoke
bombs. And they swear, a lot. It doesn’t matter if the soccer world knows the name Detroit City. To
these fans, "City Til I Die" is not just a saying, it's a vow.

Concrete Genie - Game Cinematic
Concrete Genie follows the heartwarming journey of a bullied teen named Ash, who escapes his troubles by bringing his colorful imagination to life in his sketchbook.
Ash discovers a mysterious lighthouse, where he finds a magical paintbrush charged with ‘Living Paint’ capable of creating magnificent masterpieces that can purify Denska’s polluted walls - a once bright and bustling seaside town now polluted by Darkness.
Ash must harness the magical properties of his paintbrush to eliminate the Darkness polluting Denska with the help of the mischievous Genies he creates along the way.
Oddfellows worked closely with Sony to develop an in-game cinematic depicted Ash's nostalgic childhood memories of Denska. We also created a series of backstory vignettes for the game's antagonists.

MALARIA
Malaria is a short film that depicts the downfall of an ordinary hard-working US citizen, who loses his job, is bitten by a mosquito, and descends into a fever and sickness. While being ignored by those surrounding him and finding himself in the darkest of places, this citizen's journey ultimately leads to him with no other option than to live in the streets - houseless.
It is a metaphor showing how quickly and unexpectedly, one small event can be catastrophic.
As filmmakers, we learned a lot from making this film, so we decided to create a campaign - #houselessnothomeless. With this campaign, we aim to dig into the collective consciousness and bring awareness to the homeless crisis in Los Angeles, currently one of the most pressing issues in the City.

Born from the Backcountry // Vanderham and Sandler Scout, Build and Ride a New Alpine Trail
British Columbia’s Kootenay mountains contain some of the world’s most unforgiving—and beautiful—terrain. The peaks, ridges and valleys of the region are remote, extensive and rugged, creating the opportunity for a backcountry experience like no other. Less than four miles as the crow flies from Retallack Lodge lies Antoine Basin, a heavily mined, yet seemingly untapped valley, especially when it comes to trailbuilding. Born from the Backcountry, a new film from Freehub Magazine, follows Thomas Vanderham, Veronique Sandler and the Retallack build crew as they spend a week camping and creating in this place of endless potential.

The main concept behind HOK is a Voguing choreography. This short was made during the Covid-19 lockdown phase in Italy, where shooting professional footage was just impossible. Thankfully, all the artists involved managed to record lo-fi videos on their smartphones, which I’ve used as the starting point for the animation. The quality of the videos was quite poor and most details got lost. This turned into a great opportunity as it forced me to create something from scratch, instead of just tracing the performers’ movements or traits. I wanted to design something wild and beautiful as the people involved in this project. So, when everything around us was getting darker and darker I focused only on all the wild and beautiful things I’ve encountered in my lifetime and I injected some of them into this music video.

The Italian ballroom scene is vibrant and Milan is under the international spotlight. For his single “House of Keta”, Italian DJ and producer Populous (aka Andrea Mangia) invited Italian icon, M¥SS KETA, and the pioneer mother of Italian voguing, Gorgeous Kenjii Gucci, to create a ballroom anthem. Fashion, shady references and bold runways are the ingredients of this beat that you can’t refuse to dance to. The day after Milano Pride 2019, the concept of HOK was conceived by DJ and creative director Protopapa, along with Motel Forlanini (M¥SS KETA's clique) and the producers Riva and Populous. This journey was supported by the help of Gorgeous Kenjii Gucci, an outstanding performer, dancer and choreographer who also acts in the song’s bridge.

How Black Americans Were Robbed of Their Land
Over the course of the 20th century, black Americans have lost approximately 12 million acres of land. This mass land dispossession—a war waged by deed of title, which has affected 98 percent of black farmers—can only be called theft, says Atlantic writer Vann R. Newkirk II in a new documentary.
The Scott family, from Mound Bayou, Mississippi, can trace their land ownership back to 1938, when the family’s agriculturally gifted patriarch began amassing more than 1,000 acres. By the late ‘80s, the Scotts had all but lost their land entirely. What happened in those intervening years is a complex story of systematic discrimination that’s emblematic of the experience of many black families in America.
“If you look at the Scotts, what the land meant to them wasn't just money,” Newkirk says in the film. “It was destiny. It was something to hold onto. It was a purpose and something that held their family together through generations.”
Glass Animals - Heat Waves
Directed remotely across an ocean, shot with social distancing, and involving an entire neighborhood in the video’s production—enlisting an entire block’s worth of quarantined London residents to become part of the camera team.
Some words from Glass Animals’ Dave Bayley about the video:
“This video is a love letter to live music and the culture and togetherness surrounding it. It was filmed at the peak of the lockdown in my neighbourhood in East London by the lovely people who live around me, just using their phones. These are people who are usually out at shows, in galleries, going to cinemas etc. These venues are left empty now, and many of them will not survive. The song is about loss and longing, and ultimately realizing you are unable to save something...and this video is about that but for art, being together, and human contact. ...When everyone was leaning out of their windows filming, I felt that same sense of togetherness and spine-tingling energy that happened at live shows. It made the coldness of performing to an empty room with the band stuck on screens feel even more heart-breaking.”
