Morongo

This is a documentary about Morongo Valley, and the people we met there.

A Film by NOVEMBA
Editor: Erin Nordstrom
Colourist: Jason Wallis
Music by 2WEI
Mixed by Mike Bovill
Thanks to: Electric Theatre Collective, 750mph, Spot Welders.

Leaving LA in a rented car loaded with our camera gear, we headed for the desert. We’d just spent a good few months pitching on commercials, developing ideas and plotting the next 'big thing'. We’d pounded away at our laptops long into the night, fuelled by a heady mix of angst and ambition, but the results were nothing tangible, a kind of anti-matter, a vacuum of creativity and feeling.

This trip was an antidote to all of that. We had a burning desire to just get out there and film. We craved adventure, the thrill of the unknown, ready to let our gut, instinct and curiosity lead us. What could possibly go wrong?

So we hit the road. After a couple of hours, not long past Palm Springs, we arrived at a small town carved into a narrow valley in the high desert. We pulled into the gas station to grab a cool drink. Outside we met a guy playing hacky sack with mesmerising skill and intensity. He introduced himself to us as J3, and said he’d glimpsed the fifth dimension. It was time to start filming.

As the sun began to set across the valley that day, we decided we might as well stick around Morongo Valley, population 3,552. There was just something about it. This film is a depiction of the next 4 days spent in the town.

Thank you to every person we met, spoke to, and shared a beer with in Morongo. Your warmth, generosity and character is something we’ll never forget. It was a real pleasure.

Babamimoun by Speakman Sound ft. Simo Lagnawi

Stream / download here: sms.ffm.to/pe1jqox

Official Music Video for latest single from London based brothers Speakman Sound. Directed and created by Eidy Knowles. (vimeo.com/eidy -- youtube.com/channel/UCYwM...)

Made in Maya & Redshift. Also using Prism Pipeline for file management: prism-pipeline.com/

This beautiful visual adventure created by Eidy Knowles is a relentless race through evolution, inspired by the traditional Gnawan song - featuring the vocal of Simo Lagnawi and brought to life by the euphoric trippy sonics of Speakman Sound.

The song is about Baba Mimoun, the leader of the spirits of the small forests, the human relationship with these spirits and where that takes us.

'AILA'AU: Forest Eater

Recommended to watch in 4K or HD in dark environment with quality sound.

'AILA'AU: Forest Eater is a short film that takes viewers on a journey through the infamous 2018 eruption of Kilauea's lower east rift zone on the Big Island of Hawaii. The film uses select footage from Lance Page, Michael Lienau and G. Brad Lewis with a very special shot by Adrian Hein and blends together a rich visual feast. Featuring Sam Cossman in full lava suit at lava rivers edge, testing out C-THRU from Qwake Technologies.

As the visuals dazzle, the original music and sound design helmed by Stefan Scott Nelson and Kevin Dippold creates a dark dreamy melody that nicely accents the incredible, beautiful and bizarre wonder of nature. The otherworldly sound mix is accompanied by Stephanie Dosen's powerful vocals blended with a handful of other choice musical contributions.

Rather than use a more literal documentary style of storytelling, the film keeps a visceral, sensory driven approach as in the style of Page's previous two Kilauea films. This eruption became the focus of a third chapter of the Kilauea eruption trilogy by Page Films that began in 2014 and ended strong with an epic finale of a 35 year long Hawaiian eruption.

Tāura

Tāura is a polynesian legend. Tāura are animals, plants and minerals that are "allied" with humans, families, clans. They are considered fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters. The relationship with them is fraternal and respectful.

The last long shot was certainely one of the dive I've ever done. I was so grateful to spend so much time with the mother and her baby.

I choosed this letterbox cause it has a "vintage" look and it reminds me some really good memories. It also has the aspect (like a POV) of what I see with my mask during the dive.

All was shot in Polynesia in november 2019.

Meaning in Persian – Turkish – Bosnian (Saray-ovasi – the plains around the palace, Sarajevo planes); Turkih (Saray-Bosna).
Half a millennium ago in Bosnia, a town nestled in the valley below mountain Trebevic, named after either a palace in the fields or the fields around the palace. Bosnian sanjak-bey Isabeg Ishakovic erected his palace on the left bank of the Miljacka River, built a bridge and founded the bazaar.
Sarajevo has always been an intersection of important roads from Eastern to Western Europe, from the Mediterranean basin to Central Europe and vice versa. “This is a city that, in the context of different historical events, has for centuries been a shelter and crossroads of worlds, with routes to Istanbul, Zagreb, Cetinje – Belgrade, Vienna – Budapest and Jerusalem.” Through history, Sarajevo become a bridge where the Orient and the West both clashed and merged.
The city itself blends in harmony with its natural surroundings. It is bordered by hills on the north, and Mt. Trebević on the south. The Sarajevo plane stretches in the west, with the Bosna River sour at the foothill of Mt. Igman. Mountains Igman, Bjelašnica, Treskavica and Jahorina are all a stone’s throw away. Numerous records in travelogues are a testament to natural beauties of Sarajevo. The city is often described as “a gem among emeralds”, “magical pearl in a green oasis”, “most beautifully positioned city”.
The city is located at an average of 550 meters above sea level, while its settlements on the slopes of the surrounding hills and mountains rise up to 700 meters above sea level.
Sarajevo and its history began to emerge in the valley of the Miljacka River. The river is 36 kilometres long, formed by the Paljanska and the Mokranjska Miljacka coming together near the village of Bulozi. It flows into the Bosna River as its right tributary, near the village of Butila. The river is most likely named after the sludge that colours the water in red during rainy seasons. There are three other rivers in the wider area of Sarajevo: Mošćanica, Željeznica and Bosnia; hence, the city has very favourable hydrological conditions and high-quality water.
Since the establishment in 1462, Sarajevo was the seat of the province within the Ottoman Empire for over four centuries, monarchy seat of the Provincial Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian occupation, and since 1945 the capital of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1995, Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Fables Of An Aged Youth

Why do we stop being young?

Fables Of An Aged Youth is a short conceptual film that explores the tangents of this question, looking at the moments that take away the innate innocence that makes us lose our youth. Inspired by true stories the three tales each contain a character who echo the vulnerability we all go through during this transition. These moments can come from simply growing out of your youth to the times of trauma where our youth is suddenly taken from us.

The film's ironic fairytale inspired style is a modern twist on Grimm's Fairytales in which children are always threatened with mysticism of ghouls and monsters but it is the reality of losing the belief in those dangers that scares us the most.

WAIT | Short Film

Due to a shortage of nurses trained to collect forensic evidence, survivors of sexual violence may have to travel long distances, sometimes even out of state, to find a hospital that provides sexual assault forensic exams (commonly known as a rape kit); some wait hours for an exam.

International production company SMUGGLER along side writer and director Samantha Scaffidi produced ‘WAIT’ to help bring attention and a sense urgency to the plight and obstacles facing survivors for care and justice. Samantha Scaffidi brings a personal account and a quiet yet searingly powerful truth to the film.

The Strokes - At The Door

The wait is finally over!! After 7 years the Strokes are back with a new studio album. At the Door is their debut single and we had the honor to participate on its music video. We were thrilled when Mike Burakoff and Benjy Brooke invited us to participate on this amazing project. This clip, which is actually almost a short film (5 minutes), was directed by Mike and co-produced by Benjy with an amazing group of artists from such as Ugo Bienvenu, Sike, Agathe Leroux, etc. What an amazing crew! And all in the service of a clip that resonates beautiful memories of retro animation (René Laloux, Moebius, Watership Down, Heavy Metal...). We were in charge of designing and animating the Megastructure section (warrior, overlord), over 1 minute of animation. Inspired on the Heavy Metal movie, the section is a journey of warrior trying to save the universe at any cost. Song: At The Door. Album: The New Abnormal.

FOCUS VOL.2 HDR // 8K MACRO

This is the HDR version of FOCUS VOL.2.
Please watch it on your supporting device to get the full experience or switch to the SDR version for standard displays:

vimeo.com/390786878

FOCUS VOL.2 is a collection of honorable mentions from R&D and production (dynamic wallpapers). The project was all about pure colors, clean shapes and marbling. I tried to reduce the amount of flow additives to a minimum in order do get sharp edges and avoid shapes being washed out on canvas. Everything is a bit more natural and organic, visible imperfections, dust and splotches, no heavy grading or retouching. The look has something flat and graphic to me. I think the method isn’t complete yet, but overall some good moments in there. I don’t know if I have resources to go on with research anytime soon, that’s why I wanted to share the work in progress with you, on hold for now.

This collection is a bit of everything with a moody soundscape to chill and enjoy.

Visual ASMR

An exploration of tactile textures in nature by Onesal

What does ASMR stand for?

Japanese Art studio Onesal has launched a self initiated series of four short films proposing a novel visual approach to explain it.

Visual ASMR, or Visual Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. ASMR is the subjective experience of euphoria characterized by a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin.

Natural sculpture formations set in seemingly impossible earth-like landscapes covered by living elements of surreal colors, each film travel through each almost at a micro level, witnessing its evolution. All takes place in four other-worldly landscapes we set up to examine up close the interaction, movements and evolution of the elements with their surroundings. Each of the shorts are inspired by elements in nature, architecture and timelapse photography.

The body of work delves into textural, tactile elements morphing and interacting with each other in surreal environments. The work set off to blur the boundaries between nature and design, simplicity and complexity, in an abstract uncompromised way.

TOWER OF GLASS

A short film for Ladytron’s track, “Tower of Glass,” written and directed by Manuel Nogueira. Shot on location in Lajedo de Pai Mateus, a remote area of Cabaceiras in the Brazilian state of Paraíba,

“Time is compressed between our resistance to change and the urgency of the future. We lost the meaning of past and future. There is no time here, not any more. That absence of time gives us no pause. No time for negative values, for inherent happiness, for grief, for what is human and for what is divine. No time for love. Everything is in our hands at the same time. This lack of contrast, the super positivity, cancels itself in a loop of empty results. The only possible redemption is to accept the beauty of this fragile truth and learn to live and love the moment.”
