Stormscapes 4

For a few months out of every year, the northern high plains bear witness to some of the most incredible and beautiful severe weather events on the planet. Rotating and rolling monsters composed of moisture and heat, sculpted into towering behemoths by wind and terrain. I do hope that this timelapse short film does these terrifically terrifying beasts of the sky justice. Keep in mind that everything about this video is over the top. It's bombastic, slow, fast, then slow, then fast, has cows mooing somewhere, is weirdly edited and paced, and overall a little bonkers. But these storms are bonkers. Especially the nocturnal ones.

Severe systems displayed in this video include diurnal supercells (mostly LP and hybrid), tornadoes, mesoscale convective systems, and my favorite, the nocturnal low level jet driven supercell. Possibly not a real thing. But also a real thing.

If you're interested in assisting me in paying for gas to photograph additional severe weather, I've set up a gallery of individual 4K still images taken from Stormscapes 4. Each image is available for purchase digitally for only 5 US dollars. Personal use only, but you can print them out or use them as a desktop/home screen. Or whatever other creative ideas you might have. lightalivephotography.com/p444577581

Visual elements copyright Nicolaus Wegner 2019. Footage was captured in 4K/5K raw format (diurnal sequences), and 8K raw (just a majority of the nocturnal sequences). Available for license. You can contact me through vimeo message or email at lightalivephotography@gmail.com.

Sharing is caring, so have at it. Only original video links please. I'm not bothered if you have ads all over your website or blog if you share this via article or social media. Just no ads on top of the video player is all I ask. No television or news broadcast, please.

THE LAST HONEY HUNTER

In the steep mountain jungles of Nepal’s Hongu river valley, members of the isolated Kulung culture have risked their lives for generations scaling dangerous cliffs to collect a wild and toxic honey. Deep and dark, the film glides through a misty world of forest spirits, dreams, and woodsmoke to share the story of the leader of the harvest and his final journey.

We owe our access to this story and the trust of the Kulung community to the decade of work the dZi Foundation dzi.org has done in this remote region of Nepal.

A co-production by camp4collective.com and feltsoulmedia.com, in association with the dZi Foundation and National Geographic

LUISA AND ANNA'S FIRST FIGHT

Short // Comedy // 16 mm

I was nasty as a teenager. Nasty and Silly. I wore heavy boots, talked loudly, skipped school and smoked. Still do all of those things by the way. And yes, I’ve been in fights. Incredibly silly ones. All three of them.

This little film is based on those three fights and represents the stupidity of youth as much as rock solid girl friendships. To me this is what true friendship is — being there for each other’s most nonsensical endeavors and carrying the weight of its repercussions together.

'Luisa and Anna’s First Fight' is about two high school nobodies desperately searching for the biggest fight of the year… If only they could find it.

Filmed on 16mm with a fun, silly, irreverent vibe, "Luisa and Anna’s First Fight" is an edgy comedy about two idiot best friends and a love letter to my very own two idiot best friends.

S'échapper (escape)

English //
Since very young, Greenland has always attracted me. It was a dream for me. Almost inaccessible.
The summer of 2019, the dream became reality. I left with my camera and my drone to capture these precious moments.
A moment apart that inspired me to make this video, to write this text.
"Escape" means for me a journey to his dreams. All let go to succeed in reaching our goal.

Girl In The Hallway

"Girl in the Hallway" is the winner of the 2019 Vimeo Staff Pick Award at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
Why does 'Little Red Riding Hood' give Jamie nightmares? It's been 15 years, and the girl in the hallway haunts him still. This is a testament to locked doors. A lullaby sung by wolves with duct tape and polaroids. Not all girls make it out of the forest. Some stories children shouldn't hear.

"Susan is the highest priestess of skating. She controls all the lost skatersouls in the world and is haunting for innocent skaterboys, to suck them dry and add to her power. Her latest target is the drummer of the band. Simply seducing the fragile drummer by pretending to fall in love, only for him to come home and add to her collection of forgotten personalities."

Universal Machine

Shot in the Arabian desert with a haunting backdrop of the Burj Khalifa, Universal Machine is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a gifted young girl must find a way to understand and overcome a violent encounter with a life-like android

New York-based director and artist Daniel Askill enlisted a host of international creative talent for this project. Renowned American minimalist composer Philip Glass scores an ominous orchestral piece undercut by a stirring mezzo-soprano. Belgian choreographer and Beyonce’s 2017 Grammy performance director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui planned the elaborate fight sequences, while the android was CGI mapped to Japanese dancer Tzuki Kozuki. The star of the film, Evnika Sadvakassova, is a boxer who gained the Guiness World Record for the most full contact punch strikes by a female in one minute. She won this accolade in 2018 at the age of 11.

Loving Lofoten

I spent 3 weeks in Lofoten, Senja, Andoya and Vesteralen and discovered the true beauty of this place. It's magical to see the mountains rise up from the sea, to see the fjords, the amazing landscapes, the midnight sun, the clouds, and the lovely villages. It was also a great time to visit the Lofoten Islands with it's 24 hours of daylight in the summer. I absolutely loved the midnight sun! I won't forget the midnight hike to the top of the Segla (Senja) or standing above the clouds in Tromso. This film is a collection of the unforgettable experiences.
Enjoy the video :-)

Shot with a GH5, Mavic Pro and GoPro Hero5, across 14 countries and 3 continents over a year of travel in 2017-2018. Some shots from the GH5 are 10 bits, mostly sunrises, sunsets and portraits of people. I mostly used 2 lenses: Olympus M.Zuiko ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO and Panasonic Lumix G 42,5 mm f/1.7. I used extensively a Pilotfly H2 gimbal.

I came back one year ago in spring 2018 with around 7 TB of data (about 120 hours of videos and 40 000 pictures). The editing was done on and off with other regular jobs at the same time, it was spread over several months.

Edited and color graded with Premiere Pro and After Effects CC 2019, shots cleaned with Neat Video. I used FilmConvert on some shots.

Transient 2

For licensing inquiries email dustin@dfvc.com

Here is my second rendition of storm chasing with a Phantom Flex 4K. The best shots from two years of storm chasing jammed into 3.5 minutes.

Stats: 35K miles traveled, 30 terabytes of hard drive space, 300 hours editing/coloring, 3 speeding tickets

Technical info: The Phantom Flex4K is a camera that must be post triggered while shooting high speed. This works out well for capturing lightning because the camera is always recording and rewriting to internal ram. As soon as a bolt appears in my view finder I trigger the camera to save what has been stored in the ram. Shooting at high frame rates requires a lot of light. Therefore, I mostly used my Zeiss Otus 28, 55, and 85mm lenses wide open at f1.4.

Aki Sasamoto: An Artist Walks into a Bar | Art21 "New York Close Up"

What happens when an artist gives up control?

Mirroring its subject's own playful and absurdist sensibility, this portrait of sculptor and performance artist Aki Sasamoto is a fluid hybrid of fiction and documentary—at once a magical realist world of spinning objects and a psychological exploration of fundamental questions about artistic creativity.

Drinking and bar culture has long served as a source of inspiration for the artist. With a real-world Brooklyn bar as the main stage for her deadpan performance style, a bartender acts as a sympathetic ear for Sasamoto's ruminations on past projects and recent motherhood. Embellished by CGI-style effects, the artist toggles between impromptu conversations and scripted performances, blurring the line between observable fact and subjective vision.

From firing whiskey glasses at Urban Glass in Brooklyn to installing her exhibition, "Past in a future tense," at Bortolami Gallery in Manhattan, Sasamoto grapples with the tension between control and chaos—between her mastery over materials and their own will. "Whatever I thought I had control over, whatever I thought I was," explains Sasamoto, "will change in front of me and that to me is exciting, in life and in sculpture."

Aki Sasamoto (b. 1980, Kanagawa, Japan) lives and works in New York. Learn more about the artist at: art21.org/artist/aki-sasamoto/
