Inherit The Earth

Part documentary, part experimental short, "Inherit the Earth" is a poetic encounter with five young people living in Southwest Baltimore. Conceived as a micro-documentary exploring the experience of food insecurity among children in Baltimore’s inner city, this nine-minute film transcends both its original intent and genre to create a quiet meditation on loss and hope within the struggle of urban poverty.

FLAWED

directorsnotes.com/2019/07/31/serafima-serafimova-flawed/

I’ve always had issues with the way I look. So, every time I pass even a vaguely reflective surface, I find myself performing the same old rituals - sucking in my neck and tummy, tilting my head to a more flattering angle. It’s a futile exercise, but it makes me walk away feeling a little better about my appearance. After talking to other women I realised that everyone does this in some way or another. FLAWED is my way of shining a light on these private moments in front of the mirror with our so called flaws. It hopes to make other women see that they are not alone, and that everyone has hangups of their own.

Thank you to all my brave and beautiful friends who shared their most private insecurities with me, and agreed to be part of this animation.

Queen Harold

I was in Sierra Leone filming a project for Freetown Music Festival and I knew I had to capture some of the things bubbling under the surface of this humming capital. Freetown has a unique energy, beautiful, bustling and inspiring.

I had been talking to Kwaku Kamara, a local and one of the production team about the underground gay scene in Sierra Leone, it was something he had heard of and wanted to know more about as a gay man himself. It is through Kwaku that I met Harold and Jiva and after a few conversations we began to talk about what life is like for them and their friends in Freetown.

I was struck by their incredible resilience, joy and determination in fighting for their LGBTQ rights in a country where homosexuality is still illegal. I wanted to make something that simply told their story about strength, life and a need to love freely in Freetown.

An animated elegy for the world that already vanished but it's alive in my fading memories.

You can spot some polaroids taken by my uncle. He'd fled to Canada during World War II and when communism collapsed in Poland he visited us after almost 50 years.

It was done in 'frame by frame”'animation and was visually highly influenced by Jonas Mekas` and Stan Brakhage works.

Scenes from a Brain

Sound by Justin Cavenagh
Pictures by Jason Poley

A very personal, personal project. An attempt to visualise some of the raw emotions experienced during depressed periods. Started during a bad time, and completed later. Meant going back to examine and re-experience feelings. Talking openly about feelings is hard. Making pictures has always come more naturally, looking back has been a constant coping mechanism. Along with some less healthy ones.

Justin came in towards the end of the process, re-scoring something so personal isn't an easy task. He exceeded expectations, somehow creating a track that Jason felt like he’d know for decades.

If your struggling with your brain, please contact your GP and get a mental health plan. (In Australia at least, international friends look to your healthcare systems.)

Australian mental health helplines resource - healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-helplines

If you need someone to talk to, Jason's DMs on twitter or Instagram are always open. (@jasonpoley on both)

Server Room - NOWNESS

In an ill-conceived attempt to restore the natural balance between living creatures and computers, an AI machine inadvertently becomes the harbinger of widespread destruction and chaos.

Paris-based director duo AB/CD/CD create a collage of real and digitized landscapes where faces melt into wavelengths of color, scenic valleys are reduced to topological maps, and a roaring waterfall disappears into an ocean of pixelated static.

The directors overlay the film’s boundless visuals with a recital of "All watched over by machines of loving grace," a poem by American novelist Richard Brautigan that envisions a time where people live in symbiotic euphoria with machines.

“Dystopia is no longer tomorrow. It is here, now and today. Entropy is real and will never stop,” say the directors. “That’s how we understood Brautigan’s poem when we read it. Global warming scares us because the harmony between nature, animals and humans is broken. We hope technology can solve our problems, but instead it takes us away from reality.”

Stray Sheep — Short Film

Premiered in the Golden Calf competition at The Netherlands Film Festival and on Nowness. It received a Young Director Award in Cannes 2019.

A man falls from the sky into a deserted field with nothing but a lamb in a suitcase and an engagement ring in his pocket. Disorientated, he embarks on a city-wide journey towards his arranged marriage with a woman he has never met. The road to the protagonist’s wedding is peppered with allegorical depictions of the nature of manhood and, as foreshadowed by the bleating lamb, sacrifice.

This Is The Northland.

This is the Northland.

The land of exquisite light.

- - -

‘This is the Northland’ is a personal, evocative and original documentary project, telling the story of a remarkably atmospheric location on the Northwestern coast of Scotland.

The film focuses on Sandwood bay, a remote, wild beach just south of Cape Wrath. Though now known as a place of unspoilt natural beauty, stories of ghosts and shipwrecks litter the beach's history and linger still in the minds of many.

Told through the filmmaker’s personal connection to this place, the film explores these stories, and offers a candid and honest exploration into the human relationship with wild land.

Chasing the Storm

Chasing the Storm is the labor of love and the results of my 2018 chase season with 14 days in May and June along with a day in August. We caught storms and footage in 7 different states, tested the rock climbing abilities of a Jeep Renegade in New Mexico, took a RFD tossed softball to the windshield in Wyoming, slept in a few random Wal-Mart parking lots as well as some of the sketchiest motels money could buy. In a word, 2018 was perfect! I spent the last year committed to improving my craft and I think this movie shows that growth compared to my fledgling effort Passion in the Pursuit from 2017. On the technical side of things, all sequences were shot with my Nikon D500 and Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. Editing with LRTimelapse and Lightroom along with Shotcut (because I'm still cheap!). The music is Fight For This Planet by Bobby Cole provided by Audioblocks.com. Special thanks to the 2 guys I chase with for always being willing to teach me the art of chasing and forecasting and giving me the time to get the images that I love to get.

The Making of Panthera

The Making of Panthera is a character-driven documentary short about 25-year-old Brooklyn-based drag queen Panthera Lush, whose awe-inspiring creations are the product of hundreds of painstaking hours spent at the sewing machine. With her inventive, couture-worthy looks, Panthera elevates drag to the status of fine art. Weaving cinéma vérité and choreographed drama, this documentary short invites you to gallivant around Panthera's Brooklyn — in her dressing room, backstage, and at a 2 a.m. diner run with friends. Somewhere along the way, we learn just what it is about drag that has captivated today's culture.

Two years in the making. I made the tough decision last year to save everything I shot that spring and combine it with whatever storms I captured in 2019 and make the best possible time-lapse film I could. It was incredibly difficult to sit on that collection of footage for over a year, but I'm glad I did. When you've done a few of these, at some point you gotta work even harder to top yourself and I did my best to make that happen. Even though I've lost all perspective at this point having watched this a million times during editing, I do feel it has some of the best footage I've ever compiled into one of these films. I had such a high bar set and many, many clips did not make the cut.

My storm chaser friends will recognize some memorable supercell/tornado events like Tescott, Tahoka, McCook, Hoisington, Cope, Imperial, Quinter, and Denver City (my personal favorite). I was lucky to be on those days, even though I did miss a few that I would really have loved to have been able to capture.

None of these clips would come alive without the right music and I searched and searched and searched for months until landing on the right tracks back in May. Luke Atencio has such a gift and two of his songs were blended to create the track for this film. Proud and thankful to be a Musicbed Ambassador. They have collected some of the best artists and musicians anywhere, and it's an honor to be able to use their songs.

I want to thank some people here who helped me along the way. My tour guests from the past two years who came from all over the world and spent their hard-earned money to join me for storm chasing adventures...you all are amazing. Marko Korošec, a friend and epic storm chaser from Slovenia, who helped me with some forecasting last year when I was leading tours by myself and starting to get drained. You saved my butt on a few days.

Brett Wright...who has become a close friend of mine and is one of the best chasers/forecasters I know. Thanks for joining me for the grind of essentially four tours over 38 days this spring. I mean...I never could have done that without you buddy...you have my eternal gratitude. I learned so much.

To all of you watching, who follow me on YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram, Twitter and those who support me on Patreon...thank you SO MUCH for all of it. You guys are amazing and your support and kind words over the years has been an incredible motivator. I am humbled and honored.

Finally, to my amazing wife Jina and the kiddos...it was really hard being away, especially this past spring. I made it back more than I thought I would, but it was still grueling and difficult. Thank you Jina for everything you do to help make this happen. And for supporting me no matter what. Even encouraging me when I sometimes feel like quitting. As I always say, and is the absolute truth, I never would be where I am without you.

There is also a special "post-credit" dedication someone who has always pulled for me and been in my corner since the beginning of this journey :) We are both huge Marvel fans so he will definitely get a kick out of that!

Okay, rambling is over....hope you enjoy!

HOW TO BE A MERMAID

HOW TO BE MERMAID
Model: Oleksandra Sukhetska

Since I was little, I've been obsessed with mermaids. I dreamt of being one. But when I was old enough to read the myths -- the Odyssey, for example -- I realised that they weren't these perfect idyllic beings, but real manipulators! This video is a homage to what mermaids meant to me, before growing up. I don't think I'm the only girl who feels this way...

The Moon's Milk

Seven and a half years in the making, The Moon's Milk is an entirely handmade stop motion animated short about a time when the moon was close enough to be reached by ladder. Narrated by Tom Waits, the film chronicles the last expedition of Captain Millipede and his crew to harvest the milk seeping from the craters. The action take place between the gravities of two heavenly bodies, which further complicates the attraction between the characters. Longing, missed signals, and mishaps lead to the enchantment of the heavens with music.
