Idein | Short Film

Idein is the fourth in a series of studio films, designed to push us both creatively and technically.

The film began life as a piece of concept art, inspired by a Sigmund Freud quote on the subject of the ‘subconscious’. The initial idea quickly evolved into a full film exploring the formation of an idea from the hidden depths of the mind, spiralling and rising through different stages of consciousness, until finally crystallising as a fully-formed idea.

The film’s title, Idein, is the ancient Greek word meaning ‘to see’.

Goodbye 2018, Hello 2019

"Goodbye 2018, Hello 2019"

New Year's greetings to you and me

In 2018,
We smiled.
We cried.
We despaired.
We cheered.

Sometimes
we were touched.

Everything didn't end up in one way.
Everything has been changed by us and will be.
We gotta be brave like we have been.

Happy New Year!

Happy new year!

River of Surprise

This whole world seems to be spinning out of control: No matter where we are, the world seems to spin around us. The gyro always turns. And it's getting faster and faster – to the point where we can almost lose consciousness. We hurry from one appointment to the next, work like machines and at the end of the day we hardly notice anything anymore. Burnout, anxiousness and depression are the new hallmark of people everywhere.

This film shows that there is a way out and actually it's so easy. Join me on my journey on the Mekong river and see how I found my peace of mind there.

Tam Tam - Outside the Lines

The right to citizenship at birth, ‘ius soli’, is still unapproved in Italy, denying over a million children, born of immigrant parents, automatic citizenship.

The film captures the story of an Italian basketball team, who were refused access to regional leagues because of the Italian born players’ immigration status.

Former Italian basketball champion, Massimo Antonelli, started the team at a disused holiday complex in Castel Volturno, an area that is made up of 25,000 inhabitants, a fifth of which are registered migrants. Being free to join, it offered local teenagers a chance to participate in after school sports and was sustained by generous donations.

The FPI (Italian Basketball Federation) rules stated that to compete, only 2 players per team could be migrants, which posed a problem for Antonelli and his team of hard working and committed players. Given his media status, he soon found himself at the centre of a debate about Italian citizenship and integration, and the question ‘what does it mean to be Italian?’ was brought to the fore.

12 Days of Performance: Theo Adams Company - NOWNESS

To see out 2018 with a bang we've brought together some of our favorite dancers, musicians, movers, and shakers to share their genre-breaking powers in a new series of capsule performances directed by NOWNESS' own creative director Bunny Kinney.

We'll be releasing a new film each day for twelve days, holding a mirror up to the diverse creative worlds we've explored over the past twelve months.

A handful of performers from the anarchic Theo Adams Company—a London-based collective of artists, dancers, designers and all manner of mavericks and misfits—participate in an ensemble elegy in this exclusive live rehearsal captured on camera. Catch a glimpse of one of their polished shows, the frenzied restaurant-focused Choreomania.

"We're celebrating true craft and talent in a joyful way," says Bunny Kinney about 12 Days of Performance. "Each film is a small, simple portrait of an artist or ensemble performing an improvised work. We asked everyone to just let go and do their thing, and each of them worked with us on the overall creative direction of their video—which will be brought together into one final, collaborative film."

12 Days of Performance: James Massiah - NOWNESS

To see out 2018 with a bang we've brought together some of our favorite dancers, musicians, movers, and shakers to share their genre-breaking powers in a new series of capsule performances directed by NOWNESS' own creative director Bunny Kinney.

We'll be releasing a new film each day for twelve days, holding a mirror up to the diverse creative worlds we've explored over the past twelve months.

A poet known for mixing musical elements into his verse, Dazed 100 alum James Massiah hits a reflective note with his reading of an original poem musing on what the future holds as we approach the new year. Known for combining stories of street culture with meditations on gentrification, his work often offers a deep insight into London, the city he calls home – as shown in the video for No Body No Mind.

Enjoy 12 Days of Performance then watch the full film on Christmas Day

Mamoon

As part of Blue Zoo's long-running animated short films programme, a brief was sent out to everyone in the studio to pitch an idea to tell an emotional, human story, while experimenting with the physical optics of projecting CG animation.

Over the next year, he directed, filmed and collaborated with other artists to make this beautiful short.

Antenatal Depression - Director's Cut

As women, I feel we’ve been led to believe that many of our experiences are indescribable, incommunicable; that even when we can figure out how to talk about what happens inside our bodies and our minds, that we’d better not — that others don’t want to hear it because it’s too gross, too sad, too strange. My series for BBC Three, "Body Language," rails against stigma surrounding women's health by creating an vivid language for externalizing our innermost experiences. Episode one covers antenatal depression, an overlooked and highly stigmatized medical condition that leaves women suffering in quiet isolation.

Yugoslavia

During my time in Europe, I spent several months traveling around former Yugoslavia, now called the Balkans. I went to four of the countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. I ending up working at a hostel when I was in Zagreb and spent over a month in the city where I met some of my best friends on my entire trip. My other films are usually of scenery and cities...but this one I want to be about the people. Because, at the end of the day, when you're back at home, people are what you remember the most.

All shot on the Sony A7s and DJI Mavic Pro.

Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro.
