American Dream

WINNER of the SPECIAL JURY AWARD at the 2017 New Orleans Film Festival

"American Dream" is the story of Mae, a young Chinese immigrant attempting to achieve her dream of becoming a singer in Chinatown, New York City. Things do not go as planned as the image of her dream deteriorates into a harsh reality and she finds herself back in a familiar place - or, perhaps she never left.

The film stages a confrontation with the idea of the “American Dream” and the way narratives of American capitalism have imposed imaginary norms which work to define our collective understanding of the immigrant experience. We throw into question the various modes of objectification popular cinema uses to construct narratives of female identity. Additionally, we frame the monotony of female immigrant labor in order to underline the reality of these experiences and the ways they remain, as if in a blind spot, hidden from view.

“__ /__ /__”

Usually, going from one shoot to another involves the passage of time (a second, a minute, a year...) It reflects in a delicate way these ellipses where things that we don’t see happen and, at the same time, lead us from one situation to another in a more or less linear manner. What happens if we maintain this still space and we let time pass but always in the same place?
In "__ / __ / __" we explore the limits of time and it’s course. It captures the trip to different instants, always from the same place, expanding the possibilities of the ellipsis and giving birth to an artistic universe that evoques memories using always the same spacial coordinates.

EXTRAORDINARY NORMALITY – STELLA McCARTNEY x BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Support Breast Cancer Survivors
#breastcancerawareness

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a worldwide annual campaign involving thousands of organisations, to highlight the importance of breast awareness, education and research.

Stella McCartney has designed a mastectomy bra for breast cancer survivors.
The cause is close to Stella's heart after her mother died from the disease in 1998.
This film has been produced by NFTS, National Film and Television School, as part of the collaboration with Stella McCartney and Breast Cancer Awareness. It tells the time span that embraces the life of a woman from the moment that precedes learning the hard news of a diagnosis of positivity to cancer,
to the newfound "normality". His emotional development is in crescendo and reaches its climax when words are followed fast, chasing and follow the thread of light that leads to the rebirth and reconquest of the emotional state, apparently, but only apparently, more obvious : that of "normality".
An extraordinary normality.

At Home with Isabel López-Quesada - NOWNESS

Located in the Pays Basque in south-west France, the elegant holiday home of Spanish interior designer Isabel López-Quesada is a chic testament to everyday design and the easy sophistication of Zara Home, whose products and furnishings grace her light-filled property. For this new film, López-Quesada welcomed director and NOWNESS collaborator Max Hemmings into her private retreat to talk about how our home makes us who we are, and the importance of making someone feel 'at home'.

By turns stylish and intimate, this portrait of the Madrid-based interiorist—whose design philosophy extols the creative combination of tradition and modernity—celebrates the ways in which we feel comfortable in our own surroundings, where the home represents a repository of our feelings, emotions, experiences, and memories.

The Zara Home collaborator, whose interior projects stretch from Philadelphia to Madrid, has been recognized by a number of accolades, including Architectural Digest’s ‘AD100’ and the Spanish edition of the same magazine’s ‘Best Interiorist’ award.

GREENLAND - LAND OF ICE 4K

NEW EXTENDED VERSION WITH SPEAKER: vimeo.com/303438254

Greenland - Since 8 years I'm traveling to this magical country. Today quiet and untouched places are becoming more and more rare. On my first visit to Greenland, I was fascinated by the incredible power of nature that can be felt everywhere. But during the last years things have changed. The amount of icebergs is increasing savagely. Glaciers I'm visiting every year are retreating not meters but kilometers a year and the unending amount of ice seems to be endless. There is nothing more beautiful than an iceberg - everyone is unique and the light reflecting from its surface is magical. It's sad how close beauty and decay can be seen in an iceberg. This movie is is an appreciation to the ice - for me the most amazing aggregate state of water.

More infos: stefanforster.com/

IMPORTANT NOTE - 25.11.2018
I'm working on an english spoken / extended Version of this movie. Will be online soon.

Behind the scenes
For this short film I travelled to Greenland with my drones several times. Always with the target of a certain region in a certain light situation. The shots from the calving glacier took me 4 days at the Eqi Glacier and over 75 battery charges for only 4 usable shots of a few seconds. It's a very hard intention to film the very right moment on a glacier front of about 6km wide - especially close up. But the hardest thing of flying in Greenland is the fact, that every 2-3 minutes the difference between the magnetic north and the geographic north (which are not the same place - especially so far north) causing a fatal p-gps flight error and the drone is flying away (also the camera's horizon). But at the end every single flight was worth it - filming Icebergs from above is one of the most beautiful things I've ever done. Additionally I used the drone to scout the landing spot and look for polar bears. The best thing for bears and humans is to not meet each other on shore.

Making of "FRAUD" • by Dean Fleischer- Camp

Behind the scenes look at how director Dean Fleischer-Camp and Editor Johnathan Rippon created FRAUD by sorting through 100's of hours of online videos to craft a fictional narrative.

Film Synopsis:

A family's home movies document a desperate crime spree and a bid to outrun the consequences…Or do they? In this meta-fiction thriller, an average family’s youtube videos have been edited to resemble something quite different. An extraordinary feat of editing, a provocative parable of the pursuit of happiness, and a disturbing demonstration of the mutability of the stories we share in the Internet age, FRAUD defies simplistic definition.

Lil' statement:
The track had me thinking about parades and love-pining by way of anticipation of the huge musical explosions. I was drawn to the enticing slowness of the song, and it made me think of the film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa, Cab Calloway's dancing, and some of the moods in Marcel Dzama's drawings. I decided on featuring birds as an innocent threat from the beginning, paired with a character who seems suspicious of them and unsure about their desires. I liked that the human to bird interface could become a source of happiness for no reason.

Mothica - Crossfire

From my pal Mothica's amazing new EP, which you can stream here: mothica.lnk.to/ashes

Most music videos, if you're lucky, have a three week post deadline. But this one was shot with a demo version of the track seven whole months before its eventual release! So I really got to take my time and play around with these VFX. I don't think my 2012 MacBook will ever forgive me for putting it through this but hopefully the difference shows.

Frightening Woods [Short film]

Shot on Super 8mm. Film with no speech. Please watch with headphones!

"A hostile mistery where the forest is dense. To face the menace means to pay a very high price. The return to nature, potentially cruel, reinvents the primal feeling of fear. Without every sensorial connection with surroundings, without sight, fight and blindly fight back. Or die. Editing and cutting the mistery more than the evidence." Laterale FilmFest

Orange

Let’s be honest. As perfect as we’d like Christmas to be, it’s often far from it. All the organizing can feel like a marathon and can sometimes loose its magic. But when you really think about it, putting the magic back into Christmas isn’t such a tough thing to do. All you need is the right attentions (and by that, we mean the right gift). So this year, keep Christmas wonderful with Orange’s amazing gifts. boutique.orange.fr/noel

Portrait of a Place: Bestas - NOWNESS

Each summer in the Galician town of Sabucedo, the young people of this rural parish take part in a tradition known as Rapas des Bestas—a festival, dating back 450 years, in which participants cut the manes of wild horses. The aloitadores, those responsible for restraining the horses while the cutting takes place, do so without ropes or sticks; relying on skills learned from an early age, and based on techniques passed down by the generations preceding them.

In order to capture this unique and historically authentic tradition, London-based directorial duo Jose Otero and Louis Ellison (together forming Verso Films) struck out into the woodlands of Northern Spain, in search of one of Europe's oldest equestrian celebrations and the people who keep its flame alive.

In Sabucedo, the mane cutting takes place in a masonry 'curro', or enclosure. The festival has a rich ritual element, which has attracted the interests of anthropologists and tourists for generations. The wild horses are said to belong to St. Lawrence, to whom the town commends itself at a special dawn mass —marking the beginning of the festivities. Locals and visitors subsequently head out into the surrounding woodland, searching for horses that they then lead and encourage into the curro.

"Neither ropes, sticks or any other instruments are used to subdue the horses," explain the directorial duo. "Across more than 200km of hillside, more than six hundred horses roam freely in fourteen droves, referred to in Galician as bestas (mares) and garañones (stallions). The festival involves bringing the horses down from the hillside, gathering them into an enclosure, cutting their manes and tails and tagging them. " Today, this is done with a microchip rather than a brand.

GREENLAND - LAND OF ICE 4K

Birth Control Your Own Adventure

Written & Directed by Sindha Agha

Birth Control Your Own Adventure is "a sparklingly cutting film featuring a cast of sinister Icelandic sheep, clumsy endives and an OB-GYN who talks with the voice of a robot. Agha makes insightful and snark use of these tools to chronicle the epic saga of her struggle with the side effects of birth control medication...it's a dizzyingly inventive self-portrait of a person forced to choose between depression and physical pain." -The New York Times
