Her Mother's Eyes

For those of us without the gift of a green thumb, we can only standby, helpless as our beloved house plants fade away. If only there was an ER for little green buddies!

Created for a very special edition of Hellavision Television called Hellovision that screened at Tattersall during Art-A-Whirl with no audio.

Getting Nowhere - round the world

A compilation of footage from our round the world bicycle journey (2012-2016). In 4,5 years we cycled 45000 kilometers. We started in Turkey, reached Thailand via Central Asia and China, decided to fly to India, where we spent 9 months. Later cycled to Singapore, worked there for almost a year, continued in Indonesia. Crossed Australia from North to South, flew to New Zealand, back to Australia and later to the US. Came back to Europe to bikepack a bit more.

SNOW WHITE COLOGNE

Snow White Cologne is based on a true story about my sister who, as a teenager, had a drug abuse problem. I wanted to tell her story in a non judgemental way, which is why the film tackles the difficult subject of drug addiction in a poetic and emotional manner rather than giving the viewer straight facts about the problems that come with the disease.

Process: Acrylic paint on paper

Dido's Lament - NOWNESS

New York-based director Andrew Ondrejcak presents an experimental take on the traditional operatic diva, replacing them with queer and trans performers who are on the forefront of contemporary performance. Lip-synching to Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (1689), they infuse energy and meaning to the iconic myth—which receives a radical update for 2018. The film, featuring Love Bailey, Bebe Huxley, and make-up star Gottmilk—among others—centres on Purcell's lingering lyrics: "Remember me, remember me, but never forget my fate." It is a chilling reflection on the treatment and experience of marginalized LGBTQIA+ communities across the world.

Arrival of Light - Dolomites Timelapse 4K

I am proud to share my second timelapse film featuring the Dolomites in Italy. As the summer storms pass through, these mountains can be fogged in for long periods of time. Waiting them out can feel like a lost cause sometimes. Every once in awhile the storms break just enough to reveal some of the most incredible light. This video showcases the progression of the storm through the dark clouds and then focuses in on that special moment, when the light finally hits.

You're Dead America - NOWNESS

Filmmaker Jovan Todorovic presents a visceral and enigmatic dramatization of American poet Danez Smith's eponymous lyric on alienation, violence and salvation in the States. The poem, which was published and widely shared on Buzzfeed, and accompanies his heart-wrenchingly powerful book Don't Call Us Dead, explores race relations, social disintegration, and the failure of the American Dream, which receives a dystopian visual take from Todorovic. Speaking about his darkly dynamic visual ode, and the poem that accompanies it, Todorovic explains: "America and the American dream is an emotion, and it used to be an attainable dream. This sentiment is quickly dissolving. My wish is to address this despair purely on an emotional level. This is a poetic short film that explores what has happened to the idea of the American Dream… a visceral meditation on the idea of death and decay… and finally, rebirth."

Die for Love - NOWNESS

Filmmaker and NOWNESS’s creative director Bunny Kinney steps behind the camera in this candid portrait of queer love and radical couture, joining forces with Turkish-born, London-based designer Dilara Findikoglu who styles a bridal ceremony rife with gothic romance that rethinks the limitations of traditional love. Kinney, talking about filming the designer's new clothing, explains: "Dilara’s collection is a subversive, inclusive take on bridalwear, inspired by both historical and mythological figures from stories of forbidden, often tragic romance. We cast the film with real couples and interviewed them about each other—to create a portrait of modern love that no longer hides but shows itself off proudly for all the world to see."

Synthetic Biology

This is a visual essay exploring the future technology of synthetic biology.
In recent years there have been major breakthroughs in DNA editing. Making
it inexpensive and precise to modify and or combine living organisms to our
design specifications. Through the combination of organic and mechanical
archetypes into new forms, we wanted to stir the imagination of designers and
engineers. The goal of this project is to spread synthetic biology into the sci-fi
communities. To help us visualize the design and engineering possibilities that
this technology can bring to us in the future.

Merlot: Bad for You - NOWNESS

Mexican-born filmmaking duo Santiago & Mauricio present this new video for New York’s nouveau soul singer, Merlot. Together, they offer up a moving meeting of song and performance which celebrates queerness and human emotion. Drawing on visual references from what the directors call ‘classic queer iconography’—centred especially around New York’s vibrant LGBTQIA+ communities in the 1970s and 80s, the video is as much a history lesson as a glimpse into the future of queerness. Talking about their collaboration with Merlot on the musician's latest track, the filmmakers explain: “In our minds, Merlot is a modern Grace Jones, merging the masculine and feminine while being simply themselves. Because they are based in New York, we thought creating a ‘classic’ New York vibe would be a perfect fit, with the aim of making this timeliness. This is why we didn’t want to use models—everyone in the film is playing themselves.”

YOSEMITE in Black and White

A bit of an edit put together after visiting Yosemite National Park for the first time. Unfortunately I only had 24 hours in the park so I had to work fast to get enough shots to put together an edit.

The skies were blue so the colours weren't amazing. This was part reason for me to convert all the imagery into Black and White.

eclipse

Loss and fear as seen through the war-torn eyes of a young boy. "eclipse" is set during World War 2, but there is a tragic relevance to this story today, as so many children are the innocent victims of wars and immigration happening all around the world. "eclipse" captures this in stark black & white without a word of dialogue. (16mm, B&W)

"eclipse" premiered 1995 Telluride Film Festival. It then went onto win 'Gold Prize' at the 1996 Student Academy Awards, 'Top Prize' at the 1996 Independent Film Channel Student Showcase Awards, showed at the Castro Theater during the 1996 San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, and many other festivals.

In 2016, the Academy of Motion Pictures & New York University fully restored "eclipse", using the original 16mm negative and audio DAT tape. "eclipse" is now available for theatrical viewing (2K DCP).

Jewish Film Institute - "In ECLIPSE a child survivor wanders barefoot across a stunningly evocative landscape. Director Jason Ruscio expresses the profound loneliness of a decimated world through richly textured images that bring to mind the films of Andrei Tarkovsky – burned out interiors, hands grasping to hold each other, time-worn photographs and faceless soldiers in the snow. ECLIPSE is a remarkable meditation on the effects of war."

THE ISLAND

Chasing swell around the world is an integral part of Roby's life.
And although it is very rewarding it is not always that easy.
At the beginning of November I got a whattsup from Roby that said: "Africa is calling". Well, let's go to Morocco. It was not Morocco but it did not matter, 12 hours later I was in London with Roby and Nils ready for another adventure.
We arrived on the island but the swell we monitored did not have the right direction. The search began. With the help of some locals we found some funny waves but it was not what we were looking for. At the end of the first week we decided to stop and wait for the second swell to come.
We missed our flights but the waves did not arrive.
Between sessions and more than 1000 km driven we became an integral part of the Island's culture, visiting every single spot and living with what this beautiful location had to offer.
This was part of the journey and we found a way to spend time discovering things that we would never had the way to live directly.
We lost another flight and the third week the swell finally showed up. But when you want something too much the worst things can happen and that's how life goes.

Huge thanks to all the locals, you guys are special.

A Letter to Congress

I originally set out to make this film as a sort of homage to Wallace Stegner and the enduring words he wrote in his famous 'Wilderness Letter' to Congress in 1960. His poetic appeal for robust and comprehensive conservation efforts of America’s wild lands gave me pause. In this current political climate his words began to take on new meaning. His plea for what wilderness can do for us is more relevant now than ever. Thousands of acres of our remaining public lands are threatened everyday. We need to stand together to protect America's wild lands from being sold off to the highest bidder. We must preserve wilderness as a "means of reassuring ourselves of our sanity as creatures, a part of the geography of hope."

Watch the film and take action:

Special thanks to Avocados & Coconuts, Hipcamp and everyone that contributed their amazing talents to making this film.

Dutch Clouds timelapse (The Netherlands) 4K

A timelapse movie of clouds rolling over the Dutch landscapes. I started shooting my very first timelapses for this movie. I’ll never forget a friend showed me a timelapse of rolling stormclouds, I was sold instantly. This movie wasn’t yet about creating a story line, in a way it’s collection of clips that I shot throughout the first years of me shooting timelapses, mainly of clouds. To see them move and transform in such speed is mesmerizing to me.

The locations I shot are mostly at and around the area where I used to live, in the middle of the Netherlands. It includes a couple of shots taken at Kinderdijk, the little town famous for their many windmills. Some scenes that show minor hills are taken in the south, the only area of the country that isn’t flat.

Shot with Nikon D700 & D800, Emotimo TB3 and DP Slider. Edited with Photoshop, Lightroom, LRTimelapse & After Effects.

The Burton Supercell 4k StormLapse - May 24, 2018

These majestic supercells spun over northern Nebraska on 5/24/2018. As they approached my camera, they split right where the sun was setting. The sunset timed perfectly with the storms arrival at my location as it started pouring down rain right after I shut off the camera. Music by Isaac Hananiah.

"I'm looking for interaction between things that originally didn't have any." - Winston Hacking from CBC Arts cbc.ca/arts/exhibitionists/winston-hacking-s-collages-turn-old-ads-into-psychedelic-fever-dreams-1.4681512

The film was made specifically for a group show in Vienna (curated by Clint Enns and Madi Piller) titled From A to Z, that reflects on Micheal Snow’s 1956 animated film of the same name, and his multiplicity of approaches which fluidly transition between media and form. - Clint Enns

The piece is an endless barrage of hyperlinked cable television commercials. With equal doses of satire and nostalgia, the promised pleasures of late consumer capitalism are deconstructed through a contemporary form of détournement. - Clint Enns
