Vhils - debris, Macau 2017

In memory of my father, my grandparents and the inner mountains of Portugal - Trás-os-Montes (2017).

I think the best way to tell a story is to speak of something intrinsic to you. The more you know about the subject you are dealing with, the deeper people will connect with the film, by seeing their own reflections in it. This short film blurs the line between documentary and fiction, since it is based on a true story, from my own grandparents, but it could be anybody’s story - in this case, a woman in Macau. The universality of storytelling is what pushes me to insert this tiny narratives on a much broader subject that me and Vhils have been tackling. And that is, generally speaking, the pace at which the world is moving today. It has sped up dramatically from 20 years back. And while that has brought us infinite positive things and progress, it also created new questions and paradigms. Is the world still a big place? We take 3 hours to drive 300kms, but we can send a photograph to the other side of the world in one second. Are distances getting smaller? Is the world shrinking? Are the gaps between us getting smaller? Or are we drifting apart? We’re constantly texting, talking, posting about everything and anything, but are we really communicating most of the times? And maybe more importantly - is anybody really listening?

As a curiosity, the only super 8 shot that is used in this film portraying a woman and her baby (a big friend of mine) is actual footage from Macau in late 1970s. Domingos Silva, his father, was always documenting their life in Macau and he kindly sent me a pack of old videos and it was with absolute pleasure that I made a small homage to his family and any other family who has lived there in the past.

Thank you so much to Sin Ting Yung for translating AND reading my story in cantonese for the third time. It's been 2 years since the first one and I am very grateful for having the opportunity to express myself in cantonese. Thanks to Tiago Silva, Li Chongyu and Locanda Films for being an indispensable help on local production while in Macau and helping me get whatever I needed when I needed.

And finally, thank you to Vhils and all the Vhilstudio Team who joined us in Macau : Alex, André, Russo, Juca, Viktor, Zhao, Tiago and Li, for one more amazing job done in such a small timeframe. You guys are truly hard working beasts ;)

Instravel - A Photogenic Mass Tourism Experience

► Editing:

♫ Music: Ben Laver

► Concept:
I came up with this idea last year while traveling in Roma. I wanted to take a look at the popular Trevi Fountain but I never managed to get close to it. The place was assaulted by hundreds of tourists, some of them formed a huge line to get a spot in front of the Fountain. Needless to say that I was very pissed by this sight and left for the not less crowded Pantheon.
I was shocked by the mass of people walking all around the city, yet I was one of them, not better or worst. Like all these tourists, I burned hundred of gallons of fuel to get there, rushed to visit the city in a few days and stayed in a hotel downtown. Then, I remembered a video I watched a few months earlier from the artist Hiérophante (vimeo.com/151297208). I decided to make this kind of sarcastic video but with the focus on travel and mass tourism. Hiérophante admitted that his video was "cliché" and that he got inspired by other videos. So I'm basically making fun of something I'm part of. The irony is strong.

While the era of mass world tourism and global world travel opened up in the 60s and 70s with the development of Jumbo Jets and low cost airlines, there is a new trend that consists of taking pictures everywhere you go to share it on social networks. During my trip, I felt that many people didn't really enjoy the moment and were hooked to their smartphones. As if the ultimate goal of travel was to brag about it online and run after the likes and followers.
In a recent article published by the Guardian, journalist Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett described this phenomena:
"These Instagrammers are collectively sucking the joy and spontaneity out of travel photography, and for those unfortunate enough to bump into them abroad, possibly travel itself. We must pity the poor locals, who have to put up with them. [...] Social media encourages the memeification of human experience. Instead of diversity we see homogeneity. It’s extremely boring."
theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jan/17/instagrammers-travel-sri-lanka-tourists-peachy-backsides-social-media-obsessed
In the extreme situation, this image rush can have negative impact on the environment
dpreview.com/news/3305755990/tourists-are-destroying-new-zealand-s-iconic-lake-wanaka-tree-for-instagram-photos

However, I was able to find plenty of nice accounts over my research on Instagram. Some of them were inspiring and lead by talented persons. In the end, social networks are just a tool. For better or worse, (or both).
Eventually, I couldn't secure a picture of the Trevi Fountain for my Instragram account but I still had a very nice time in Italy.

► Production:
I used images available on public Instagram accounts. Finding and sorting the material took a lot of time but I produced the video over several months when I had time. The process of aligning each and every images manually in relation to the next was very tedious.
In terms of copyright, I believe that this type of use fall under the fair use. This is not a commercial project and every image appears for less than 1/4 of a second.

Catalunya

As soon as I stepped in Catalunya I knew that I would found a place that I wouldn't want to leave.

Mainly known for Barcelona and sandy beaches, Catalunya goes beyond that and surprises you with its diverse nature and its strong culture stepped into the arts, architecture, food and folklorist traditions.

I just loved it all and have put together the best stories that went through my eyes for you to take a 4 minutes ride across this beautiful destination.

Servus Salzburg (4k - Time Lapse - Tilt Shift)

Salzburg is a city in Austria and the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Salzburg's "Old Town" is internationally renowned for its baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. But despite it being very picturesque, I give the city 10 points out of 10 for being a tacky tourist trap. So unless you have a strong addiction for Mozartkugeln I would not recommend to travel there. Watch this miniaturized movie and go to Vienna instead, which is also very pretty and a cool city.

Toydrum: I’ve Got a Future (Nick Cave & Warren Ellis rework) - NOWNESS

In this new video from British filmmaker Jack Weatherley, a track from Brighton-based band Toydrum gets a sombre reworking by longstanding musical collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. "I've Got a Future," featuring the vocals of late singer-songwriter Gavin Clark, first appeared in Shane Meadows's coming-of-age drama This is England '90.

Weatherley, who has been lauded for his emotionally-packed shorts—including BFI London Film Festival selection Pieces—talks about how the song affected him: “I was blown away when I first heard Nick and Warren’s reworking of the original. It moved me deeply. It’s one of those rare pieces that is at once unsettling and beautiful, as if there’s something—a presence—trapped within the texture of it."

Zagreb - The city with a million hearts. Timelapse & Hyperlapse

The city of Zagreb, capital of Croatia, on the historic and political threshold between East and West, illustrates both the continental and Mediterranean spirit of the nation it spearheads.

Zagreb is the cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative centre of the Republic of Croatia, and is home to the Croatian Parliament, Government and President. Its favourable location between the Pannonian plain, the edge of the Alps and the Dinaric range has allowed it to become a crossing point for mass international communication.
The city is protected from the cold northern winds by the mountain of Medvednica and opens up to the rest of the world thanks to a spacious plain and the Sava river. Zagreb, with a population of nearly one million, contains almost a quarter of the entire population of Croatia. Over the centuries, the city was inhabited by people coming from all over Europe; and, in recent years, by people coming from different parts of Croatia, ensuring a rich cultural life. Zagreb is a safe city whose doors are always open; a city with a tumultuous history teeming with interesting personalities;
a city that warmly invites all those who wish to get to know it, and a city that will surely fulfill your expectations. In this city, you can easily meet remarkable people, make new friends and enjoy special moments. The façades of Zagreb’s buildings reflect the ebb and flow of history, while its streets and squares bear witness to the coming together of the many cultures that have shaped the identity of this laid-back capital. The best thing to do is when you first arrive is to take in Zagreb’s wonderful atmosphere, which, as many claim, is only surpassed by the legendary beauty of the local womenfolk.

Grad Zagreb, smješten na zemljopisnom, kulturnom, povijesnom i političkom sjecištu istoka i zapada Europe, glavni grad Hrvatske, spaja kontinentalni i mediteranski duh u osebujnu cjelinu.

Vienna moves

The city may be different and not always like you used to see in the pictures, while still remaining unique and charismatic. My goal was not to show the main sights of the city, but to convey the feelings that you are experiencing in this city when the feast is over, and spring has not yet arrived.
This is Vienna, this is winter.

Flight

Two young sisters who arrive in Sweden having fled the war in Syria are becoming teenagers in a new world. They try to hold on to the fond memories of their once beautiful home while struggling to deal with the repercussions of growing up surrounded by war.

Laura is a half Scottish/ half Syrian documentary filmmaker and ‘Flight’ follows the journey of her two young cousins, Mera and Maria.

"Flight is a really lovely film, very tender and intimate. Laura's relationship with the girls shines through. It's so refreshing to watch a film like this; made from the refugees' point of view." - Kim Longinotto

“This story of two sisters’ journey from Syria to Sweden - and how it changes them - is simultaneously uplifting and heart-breaking. That it achieves what it does in such a short time is nothing short of miraculous.” - Outline Magazine 2017

The Beauty of the Milky Way

I present a 4-minute video (in 4K resolution) featuring time-lapses of the Milky Way taken from Alberta, Canada and from Australia, showing the motion of the sky and galactic core.

I include a still-image mosaic of the Milky Way from Aquila to Crux shot in Chile.

Locations for the time-lapses include Writing-on-Stone and Police Outpost Provincial Parks, and Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta. In Australia I shot from the Victoria coast and from inland in New South Wales near Coonabarabran, with some scenes from the annual OzSky Star Safari held each April.

Most scenes were shot in 2016 and 2017.

I used a SYRP Genie Mini and a Star Adventurer Mini for the panning sequences, and a TimeLapse+ View intervalometer for the day-to-night sequences. I processed all sequences through LRTimelapse to smooth transitions and flickering.

Music is by Audiomachine.

Enjoy!

— Alan (January 2018)

ཡ་ཆེན་སྒར་ Yarchen Gar

Yarchen Gar, officially known as the Yaqên Orgyän Temple, lies in an isolated valley 4000 m above sea level in Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
Due to the remoteness of the institute and the bad condition of roads leading there, Yarchen Gar sees very few tourists.
Officials often prevent foreigners from entering the institute or staying there overnight.
It is reported to have 10 000 monks and nuns (most of the inhabitants are nuns), making it possibly the largest monastery in the world.
These images are rare and they will be part of a larger project.

In loving memory of my dad, Paolo Chiesa died suddenly on October 2016, when I was in Yarchen Gar.

ALIVE | Canada 4K

I travelled 5500 km in six weeks exploring the vast landscapes of British Columbia and Alberta in Canada, always looking to place my camera gear in the most beautiful sceneries possible.

With 54.000 single photos shot along the way I created ALIVE - a timelapse film which takes you on a vivid journey through wild forests, along the shores of crystal lakes and up the hills of massive mountains.

By making this project, I want to raise awareness of our wonderful planet earth which we have the privilege to be part of. That’s why we have to take responsibility for it - for the place where we are alive.

Wales Bonner, Finding Saint - NOWNESS

American filmmaker Jordan Hemingway collaborates with British-Jamaican designer Wales Bonner in this meditative new film, which introduces three emerging faces from Jamaica’s Saint Models agency—Tevin Steele, Jordanne Wellington and Jermaine Downer—as they reflect on faith, beauty and their experience of travelling from home to participate in Des Hommes et de Dieux, the brand's Autumn/Winter runway show during London Fashion Week.

Partly shot by the models themselves in both London and Kingston, Jamaica, the film explores each man's relationship to his homeland, its landscape and the water that surrounds it—ideas that further extend the themes of the collection. Produced and creatively directed by Bureau Future, the film also includes sound by composer and producer James William Blades.

Hot Flash Heat Wave - Raindrop

BEHIND THE SCENES: madebyboredom.com/raindrop
--
“Raindrop” is the hit song off Hot Flash Heat Wave’s sophomore album Soaked. BOREDOM, comprised of director-duo Luke Lasley & Patrick Sean Gibson, transformed the song into a psychedelic music video. Constructed of creative processes of yesteryear, Raindrop was shot on 16mm film and sprinkled with hand drawn and stop motion animation. The music video takes the viewer on a transcendental journey from forest, to city, to the deeper corners of the mind’s playground. Get ready to get cosmic, to get playful, to feel magic, and to view, first hand, an exclusive glimpse of San Francisco’s next generation of creative dreamers.
