INVISIBLE OREGON

Created entirely with infrared converted cameras, Invisible Oregon is a study of light across time and space. As the sun rises over the State of Oregon infrared light travels across the earth revealing the subtleties of new growth and the dramatic intersection of sky and earth. Witness for the first time this diverse and interconnected landscape rendered from light we can't see with our own eyes.

Ever since my youthful days of “experimentation” I've often wondered about the nature of reality. Those of you that still believe in science understand the limitations of our perceptions, and it's no secret that many creatures exceed our abilities to interpret the world around us. The idea that we have to process the sensory data coming into our brains makes it seem like we are already a step removed from the real world.

So what exactly are we missing? What do animals experience that we can't, and how do our human perceptions vary from person to person? While this film does nothing to answer these questions, time-lapse and infrared photography do, in a metaphorical sort of way, extend our sensory abilities so we can imagine a world beyond ours. Ultimately I think this is what draws us to these forms, not to solve the mystery, but to flirt with it's boundaries.

Lifeline

BFI Funded Short written/directed by 17 year old Sam Jones.
A story about Beth, a mother who is forced to the limit for her son Ash, putting her morality to the test.
Lifeline asks how far we'd push ourselves for the people we love. The film shows that even in a brutally impossible situation, there will always be something deeply human in everybody, a connection between every one of us.

1976

1976 meditates on presentiment and sound. The surreal short crafts an unsettling atmosphere of foreshadowing and immanent change. A clever combination of live footage and CGI, the film allows its soundtrack to drive the visuals. Everyday objects reverberate, twist and react to an oncoming pulse of events as they converge on a farmhouse lost in rural America.

Stellar

In an anonymous and bleak city, people are as numb and square as the surrounding buildings. Monotonous routines are carried out just like yesterday and the day before when all of a sudden organic, orange spheres emerge from dark corners, soaring lively towards the skies. As the spheres merge, getting bigger and bigger, the citizens finally pay attention and some curious souls accept the invitation to approach. At once, we are thrown into a baffling and beautiful world where you must lose yourself before you can find your true, passionate core.

Cream

The film takes place in a doctor's waiting room where soothing music and the opportunity to enjoy an ice cream brings about an alleviating atmosphere. What could possibly go wrong in a healthcare institution where help is nearby? The cold and ugly sides of human nature reveal themselves as the narrative touches on the cycle of birth and death and the absurdity of life. Let's hope the doctor can help!

Fingers of Steel

Chris Heck fought his way up over the most dangerous, lifethreatening tricks, with numerous sore finger injuryies, and nerval breakdowns to where he is today.
Since winning the German championship in 2003, he worked everyday on his inventive tricks while phoning with his wife wife Anna, on his wooden kitchen table.
Through this hard training his fingers became harder than any industry steal you can buy.
His Pro Model, with a a red Skwirral, (which is his favorite animal, right after turtles and foxes) crowns his legendary 21 years of Finger Skateboarding.

FITC Amsterdam X Titles

Now in its 10th year, FITC Amsterdam returns to host the groundbreaking design and tech event on the future of innovation, design and all the cool $hit in between.

Created by Murat Pak, the creative mind behind undream.net - an international multi-award winning studio crafting inspiration for all media experiences.

'What was your inspiration for the creative for FITC Amsterdam X?'

If I would summarize it with a single word, it would be "potential". Event creative revolves around this idea of a "Product X" - which is shaped depending on the viewer/audience. Just like the output of any creative, I believe FITC, as a creative event, outputs something.

ELEMENTS OF ICELAND - 4K (UHD)

As Iceland’s tourism is presently skyrocketing, probably out of recognition after one of its volcanoes (Eyjafjallajökull) erupted in 2010, it was imperative for me to get there while the nature is still preserved. Rest assured that there were other reasons! To see some decent northern lights for one, or also an overwhelming and virtually uncharted wild life, for the sake of the few organisms that live there at least. During my week of backpacking with my roommate Ulrik Møller from Denmark, I was struck by how mineral Icelandic landscapes are, underlying harsh and inhospitable living conditions. The biting cold, the constant moist and the nutrient-poor soil offer shelter to only the most docile species. Although barren in appearance, Iceland is far from being boring. The experience of a week and the whole impression of the country helped to find a fitting title for this short film: ‘Elements of Iceland’. If the land is not defined by its biodiversity, it surely constituted by the elements.

The canvas of my film was to present Iceland in a different way (as there are a myriad of beautiful videos out there), by juxtaposing all the elements that highlighted my seven days in the country. I also tried to put them in an order that would allow me to find nice transitions, from ice to liquid water, from Earth to air and from light energy to heat energy. The challenge was for me to showcase the elements without any human interaction in the frame to get a purer picture of the mineral nature of Iceland. I stayed in the south-west part of the country and was based at 10 kilometers from Þhingevellir national park where I shot the oceanic rift scenes and all the northern light pictures. We drove all the way to Vatnajökull glacier and Jökulsárlón lagoon to get the ice pictures. The hotspring/steam/geyser scenes were shot in Geysir and Reykjadalur. We also shot at some remote locations, such as near Mount Hekla, Friðland að Fjallabaki, or Eyjafjallajökull…

The very first challenge was to get a maximum of clips and pictures under almost constant rain for a week. It took a serious toll on my cameras, as plastic bag protection obviously wasn’t enough (my Sony a7r2 almost died!). My roommate and I drove and hiked each day in specific locations, most of them being far from tourists. We saw the sun just a couple of times, and a lucky window of 3 hours of ‘cloud-free’ (said the Icelanders :) ) gave me the opportunity to shoot some beautiful green and purple aurorae. The second challenge was the wind: being allowed 23kg on-board our flight, I only took the lightest tripods, meaning that they weren’t as sturdy as those at home, and a lot of my shots needed post-process stabilization.

Even if the video hardly gives a foretaste of how truly majestic the country is, one can only appreciate its grand nature while being there. It’s merely a humbling experience when you are standing next to throusand-meter-thick glaciers or when the mountain in front of you looks close but actually is 20 miles away. There really is something spiritual about this place, hidden beneath a seemingly desertic and elemental mask. All nature-lovers will adore roaming its breath-taking landscapes, as I did.

You can find more information about the film at adphotography-online.com. All shots have been recorded with Sony a7r2, Sony a7s and Canon 6D and iPhone 7. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed the marvels of Iceland as much as I did. Don’t hesitate to like, comment, share and of course follow me for more 4K videos!

DESCENT by Peter Burr, Mark Fingerhut, and Forma

In 1562, Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder completed a painting called "The Triumph Of Death". In this panoramic landscape the sky is blotted out by black smoke; ships and dead fish litter the ocean shore; and an army of skeletons experiment with myriad death techniques. The living are badly outnumbered and the variety of fated tortures seems endless. There is little room for whimsy in this tableaux.

Over 200 years earlier, a nasty plague, commonly known as "The Black Death", left a cruel and massive mark on European civilization, wiping out half of Europe’s total population. This was a quiet pervasion of death - an invisible pathogen carried by herds of tired rats. This plague triggered a series of social and economic upheavals with profound effects on the history of medieval Europe, guiding its survivors into the sort of self-inflicted darkness pictured by the Elder Bruegel.

Looking back at this historical trajectory, Peter Burr, Mark Fingerhut, and Forma have created a spiraling interdimensional narrative aptly titled DESCENT - a meditation on one of humanity’s blackest hours. Taking the form of a desktop application, descent.exe gives the user a brief glimpse of a world descending into darkness - an unrelenting plague indifferent to the struggles of the user. There is a silver lining, however, tucked into the software’s final sweep. An equanimous watcher, reduced to a single eye, looks on as the plague of rats that has infested your desktop destroys itself.

This video is a recording of descent.exe running alongside Fingerhut's deepdesktop.exe.

The Power of Privacy

Can privacy really still exist in a world where we are continuously connected to the internet?

I directed these animated sequences for co-director Callum Cooper's D&AD Yellow Pencil winning documentary series "The Power of Privacy" for The Guardian. The series explores the potential as well as the limits of privacy today. The animations establish the historical context and key themes for each episode of the series.

How small are we in the scale of the universe?

For Ted-Ed

http://ift.tt/2l7L9X0

In 1995, scientists pointed the Hubble Telescope at an area of the sky near the Big Dipper. The location was apparently empty, and the whole endeavour was risky – what, if anything, was going to show up? But what came back was nothing short of spectacular: an image of over 1,500 galaxies glimmering in a tiny sliver of the universe. Alex Hofeldt helps us understand the scale of this image.

The Cage | Filmsupply Originals

Filmsupply Originals presents — The Cage.

More than a story of redemption, The Cage is a story of survival. When Philly’s streets look to bring one young man down and entangle him with violence, anger, and death, it’s purely up to him to find a way to break free. While the only escape may seem to come from the basketball court, make no mistake — this is no game.

Max Cooper & Tom Hodge - Symmetry

Max Cooper

Symmetry is one of the most fundamental principles of nature, and also forms the basis of music. So this music video is an important early chapter in the Emergence audio-visual project, which starts with visualisations of the basic building blocks of nature, setting the stage for the physical universe to come into being, and later planets, life, civilisation, and technology (the whole story and project is explained at: emergence.maxcooper.net).

Symmetry is the idea that one aspect of a system can change while another remains constant. The idea of natural laws themselves, rely on the forms of symmetry that mean the same forces will apply to you as they do to me, independently of our position in space or time. And scientists searches for natures symmetries lie at the heart of much of our best models of reality (see Noether's Theorem or more recent uses of symmetries in things like the 'amplituhedron'!).

The principle is also responsible for music, in that our enjoyment of tonality, melody, harmony and rhythm comes from our subconscious appreciation of different types of patterns (i.e. symmetries) in sound waves.

The idea of Symmetry was explored in the video by Kevin McGloughlin, using simple symmetrical forms (primarily the circle), and symmetrical operations applied to them - rotations, translations and reflections. The animation demonstrates the beauty of this simple concept when applied in an iterative journey towards ever increasing complexity, both visually and musically.

The audio track originally came from preparations for a live piano and electronics show with Tom Hodge. I had some chords and glitches we were playing with in combination with a simple piano motif. We decided to try some live Fender Rhodes with it during practice and it all came to life.

Luckily we recorded the whole session so I had a load of stock content to play with when it came to turning the project into the album intro. My reasoning was that the intro should be about symmetry because of it's basic role in nature, and the development and form of the track, going so glitchy from a simple melodic motif starting point, should work with applications of ever more complex symmetrical manipulation - emergence from symmetry, just as Kevin delivered.

Amazingly, Kevin didn't use automated sync points from the stems of the audio project - or to put it another way, Kevin painstakingly set up all of those edits by hand, hats off to him for his perseverance on that!

Thanks for having a read, watch and a listen! - max
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I first heard Symmetry I was blown away by its impact and it really struck a chord with me... On hearing the concept for the track, this feeling was empowered tenfold. After much discussion with Max, we arrived at a conclusive concept for the visual.

I represented conservation laws by the use of a simple circle repetition. This circle form took on many new characteristics and evolved in complexity throughout the course of it's journey, though every new form is an evolution / adaptation of the initial circle. I used a variety of techniques in an attempt to convey the idea of this ever evolving complexity within symmetry.

Starting with minimal moire patterns, moving into 3d depth and finally ending up with massive distortions and adaptations using a technique I developed 'Digi-Cut', displaying various moments in time offset by tiny fractions. This was an effort to demonstrate pre-universe ideas and the introduction of organic matter in relation to symmetry.

It was an absolute honour to work on this project with Max, in particular on 'Symmetry', which is my personal favourite piece on Emergence.

The Story of the Re-Evaluated

There is an ongoing story in the history of cinema about films that are derided and rejected upon release but then completely re-assessed years later. Titles like Citizen Kane, Blade Runner, Vertigo, It's a Wonderful Life, and more all share this in common. Let's talk about this concept of re-evaluation and what it means, if anything at all, for the future.

For educational purposes only.

Singing from the rooftops

He was baptized as Eduardo, but he never felt this name as his own, vagabond, paratrooper, go-getter, poetry lover, dreamer, Jean Genet-esque character... but most of all, artist: in fact, probably the last quick-change artist in the almost extinct Chinese district of Barcelona.
A born survivor, he has taken hard blows from life and overcome them all, like especially the unrequited devotion of his only true love: Margarita Carmen Cansino, better known as Rita Hayworth... or Gilda.
This is a tribute to an artist whom, at 90 years of age, keeps going on stage everyday to deliver his show. As his beloved poet Federico García Lorca once wrote, the sissy boys of the south sing on the rooftops: Gilda Love will carry on doing so.

Lay Down Your Weapons

Following the path of Strange Freedom´s previous videos we wanted to move from rather materialistic and abstract creations towards a glimpse of humaneness but still up to one's neck in morass. In particular we focused on the most common feature of identification: the human face. At first, it seems defenseless, even motionless, dead, fading into the background like stone. It looks like endless layers of dust and debris smothering every pore, every twitch of expression. All blessings and wounds paint traces onto faces. »Lay down your weapons« describes a long battle to survive.

This music video is based on thousands of single macroscopic and microscopic photographies.
