I have only been to Swaziland once before and I enjoyed the few days we spent exploring our neighboring country. I wanted to come back and spend some time at a few of the spots we visited back in 2016. The impressive mountain landscape at Malolotja was one of the locations that made an impact on me, and the plan was to spend the Easter weekend of 2018 camping and filming in the Malolotja nature reserve.
It took us less than 4 hours drive to the Oshoek border post from Pretoria, the border crossing was quick and easy, as is always the case in Swazi (in my experience anyway). We had a few hours before we had to check in to the Royal Swazi Hotel were I would be filming a wedding the next day. A quick search on the GPS took us to a nearby attraction: Sibebe rock on the outskirts of Mbabane, the capital city of Swaziland. Sibebe rock is the second largest freestanding rock in the world, next to Uhuru in Australia, and it is also the name of the local beer in Swaziland.
This was the first trip I did with my new Zhiyun tech Crane 2, it is a handheld stabilizer that works perfectly with my Canon 1DXMkii when filming. Not only does it provide me with super smooth video, it can also be used as a pan tilt motorized timelapse head. The only way to capture the impressive size of this unique rock was by air, and I got some drone shots with the Dji Mavic pro on lone from Mighty Fine productions.
On our last day in Swazi we had the perfect sunset at Malolotja and the Zhiyun tech Crane 2 did not disappoint. I also did a bit of sound recording during this trip and I am quite happy with the results.
This was not the only video I shot during this trip, watch this space for more films.
Fun Fact: This video was shot in March 2018, in April 2018 the King of Swaziland announced that his country had changed its name to eSwatini to mark 50 years since independence from British rule.
