BBC2 Idents

We recently worked with BBC Creative and Superunion to design and produce a set of unique idents to help launch BBC2’s first identity update in 25 years.

As well as these idents we were also tasked with creating a full set of motion guidelines that allowed further collaborating artists, studios and designers working across multiple mediums to create their own unique idents.

Space Tourism

This video has been created to summarize in a simple and enjoyable way the final degree project made by Laia Molinas, licenced in tourism.

In the second half of the 20th century, what was known as the "space race" was mainly due to the tensions and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. In little more than 10 years we went from sending the first satellite to Earth's orbit, to step on the Moon. Once this goal was achieved by NASA, the study and discovery of outside space has not stopped, however, it has remained in the hands of very few organizations, all governmental and with increasingly reduced budgets due to the little interest of the public.

It is not until the twentieth century that projects and private companies are beginning to become interested in the space again. With the conviction that the technological border is almost ready to break the barriers of our planet and open up to a universe of possibilities. The Project focuses on the tourism market, through articles and books it takes a global picture to conclude that the space business is ready to erupt.

OPPO R11

Ya, it’s OPPO again! a new commercial for their latest product, R11.

In China, we call mobile phone “手机”, these two chinese character means “hand” & “phone” separately. So I decided to try to play around the “phone” with the “hand” together this time. The result looks quite funny XD

Hope you like it!

COMDIRECT BANK

COMDIRECT

We were honoured being asked by the German bank, Comdirect, to create a short animation for an online campaign — aimed at attracting and recruiting UI-designers.

Our idea was to create a bunch of action-reaction based animations. The very first concept was based on the idea of pushing, shifting, scrolling and clicking various buttons triggering a diverse mix of animations. We then worked up different metaphors for dealing with money and at the same time used keywords the client had provided us. During the process the client fell in love with all the little “reaction” stories so we ended up stitching them together to create a seamless narrative — open to interpretation and detached from conservative visualisations so often associated with banks.

The colour palette is based on the new CI of Comdirect, predominantly anthracite and grayscale. Yellow acts as the highlight colour with a gradient to green drawing the viewer’s attention to the stories’ heroes. The environment is based on dots, points and circles inspired by visual language used in the world of stock markets.

Our software package was Cinema 4D and Octane renderer. The edit and compositing were done in Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

Abstract Reaction

Over the past few weeks I've been working on an experimental project called Abstract Reaction. It's about style and exploration of different representations of a spherical form. By using different methods and textures (Particles, liquid, smoke etc) I tried to make every representation unique with its own dynamic and animation in an abstract way, without losing a round shape. My goal was to see how far I could go with a simple concept and I came up with 50? but for ediTing purposes and in order to stay dynamic, I preferred to show only 21 ( however I will showt the others in a breadown or a tutorial) Thank you and I hope that you’ll enjoy it

Emporio Armani / Watches & Jewelry Collection

For this Emporio Armani showcase video we identified several graphic elements on each product and that was the starting point for the entire concept. We tried to stay true to the shapes and textures of the very products and at the same time emphasize their design and aesthetics.

All The Things

"All The Things" is a collection of individual narratives, unified by a cohesive style.

Our intention was to work on a short, simple piece. As many of you know, sometimes personal projects evolve and take on a mind of their own. As the months rolled along, we found ourselves frequently going back and adding more content to each scene. We had a lot of fun allowing our imagination drive the development of the various narrative.

SPLIT

Throughout our lives, we often inspire undue stress and anxiety by viewing our existence with a “dualistic mind.” We create a world of private duality, a world that is limited to fixed or black and white thinking. We do this because it gives us a (false) sense of security and control over life’s uncertainties. The dualistic mind tricks us into thinking we have this “life” thing figured out, and we don’t have to struggle and search anymore.

Max Cooper - Order from Chaos - Official Video by Maxime Causeret

I'm really excited about this video project, after the first live show it was the part that everyone was asking about - It is a beautiful humanised exploration of life and emergence, by Maxime Causeret. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

The idea for this part of the story started on a day when there was really heavy rain hitting the roof window at my old flat. I got out my binaural mics and put my head right up by the window with the big raindrops hitting all around. They made nice individual percussive noises, with great spatial positioning, so I decided to use them to seed a piece of music.

This track is the most explicit representation of the idea of emergence in the album, because the rhythm of the track is created by the raindrops in an emergent manner - I took the audio samples, mapped the transients for the raindrop hits, and then forced the mapped points towards the nearest drumming grid positions. This meant that the random raindrops were pushed into a quantised grid, and the result was that a percussive rhythm emerged, one that I hadn't created myself, but was the closest rhythm to that particular section of rain.

I then played the sansula over this rain rhythm, and added lots of pads and saturation layers, finally with some vocal snippets from Kathrin deBoer to complete the track. Maxime Causeret selected this track to work with, under the brief to map the emergent rhythm to an exploration of emergence in living form.

His video shows the raindrops initially, then going into simple cellular forms and then showing the important idea of cooperation between simple cells to form more robust colonies of life. This develops into a visualisation of the idea of endosymbiosis, where simpler smaller organisms can live inside larger cells, each providing a benefit to the other, and eventually forming parts of the same organism as they evolve to be entirely dependent on each other. The video also shows competition between organisms for resources, which spurs on their evolutionary development, as each species tries to keep up with the innovations of the others. He also visualises the emergent ideas of flocking behaviour, where groups of individuals form beautiful dancing-like patterns.

Maxime also shows us a section of animated reaction-diffusion patterns, where simple chemical feedback mechanisms can yield complex flowing bands of colour - these forms of system were originally thought up by Alan Turing, and were part of the early seeds of the field of systems biology, which seeks to simulate life with computers, in order to better understand the systems producing the complexity we see in the living world. They were also the starting point of my main research area many years ago before I got lost in music! (where I began with the question of what patterns could be produced via reaction-diffusion forms of system as opposed to gene-regulatory network controlled patterning).

So it's a rich visual treat from Maxime on many levels, I can see why so many people were asking about it after the first live show. Lots more amazing video content to come over the next few weeks.

Some words from Maxime about his process (translated from French):

Max wrote a brief text on each song to let us know his own feeling and we were free to make our own creation. I firstly made a lot of small experiments with dynamic systems around my main idea of living micro organism. It was now time to experiment with editing. I also ask for opinions, ideas and tests of few friends, specially Leslie Murard.

I firstly made a lot of small experiments with dynamic systems around my main idea of living micro organism. It was hard to then put everything together. It was now time to experiment with editing. I also ask for opinions, ideas and tests of few friends, specially Leslie Murard. Then i just have to do the real shots from my experiments.

In terms of tools, I work with Houdini. It's a software which gives you a lot of freedom. You can easily customize tools or build your own tools. It's famous for vfx but you have the same freedom with modelling or animation tools for cheap when you're a freelance.

I always start with few sketches on paper for ideas. I also search for références drawings/photos/painting. In Houdini i try to setup something fast to Cook or at least fast to preview in order to animate the shots in good conditions.

The major challenge was to put everything together. There's nothing very hard but it's never easy to get something who "works" so it needed time to adjust things. This production was made this summer on 4 months but not at full time. I also had few other projects.
