Memories of late summer. Filmed and photographed from the towpaths of the Stratford-upon-Avon and Grand Union canals, Lapworth, Warwickshire. (Towpaths are tracks alongside canals originally used by horses to pull narrowboats.)
Britain’s canal system played a vital role in the development of the Industrial Revolution. Eclipsed first by the railways and then road haulage, canals fell into rapid decline after the Second World War. Since the 1970s, the restoration of canals, mainly by volunteers, has been a huge success. The network of fully navigable canals now provides green corridors for leisure craft, cyclists, walkers and wildlife.
