There is a variety of ethnic groups in Sri Lanka, each with its own language and religious traditions. Besides the majority Sinhala Buddhists, the nation also includes Sri Lankan Tamils, Tamils of recent Indian origin, Muslims, semitribal Väddas, and Burghers, descendants of intermarriages between Sri Lankans and Europeans.
Locals possess a warm and friendly nature reflected in persistent smiling faces and eagerness to help others. Sri Lankans are very hospitable and take pride in inviting people to their homes, however, they will remain modest.
