Darul Aman Palace, Kabul, Afghanistan. 17th December 2012.

Shot with a 5dmk3,EF-L 28-300 IS & Samyang 14mm. Used Magic Lantern HDR settings at various ISO brackets (all shot at 1280x720 - 50fps - IPB), then separated and merged alternate frames, using the following post workflow: http://ift.tt/1Uft43w - H.264 rushes were transcoded to ProRes HQ using 5dtoRGB, initial separated light and dark frames exported from AE at 32bpc as TIFF sequences.

Stayed at the palace for as long as possible before beginning to lose fingers and toes.

In retrospect, I have two observations:

1.I think that the benefits of HDR in this context were marginal. I could've stopped down to keep in the skies and ended up with only slightly less information in the shadows (and then had full 1080p25 instead of 720p50).

2. I will definitely explore the differences between IPB and ALL-I compression for future HDR video attempts. It looks to me like the IPB that I used for all of these shots is struggling with the constantly shifting ISO values. You can see fine detailing 'flickering' on and off in many of the shots (especially the pans/tilts).

Any and all thoughts and comments welcome.

Cheers,

jason
