Moving further into the old school, we saw the remnants of a last minute decision. The gas masks represent a firm conclusion that Chernobyl's radiation couldn't simply be washed away. Instead, anything it touched would remain there, entombed for the rest of eternity.
Only doors away from the cafeteria were the classrooms. An eerie reminder that the announcement to evacuate came without warning or choice. The classrooms are time capsules that define the very moment that students dropped paper and pencil, never to return.
