Death-Cap Mushrooms are Terrifying and Unstoppable

Most poisonous mushrooms won’t kill you—they’ll simply cause a severe headache or vomiting. Death-cap mushrooms are not like the others. As little as half an Amanita phalloides contains enough toxin to kill an adult human. Ingestion of the poison in death-cap mushrooms, known as amatoxin, is responsible for 90 percent of deaths related to mushroom poisoning worldwide. Worse still, death caps can resemble nontoxic mushrooms and are said to be quite tasty. You might not know you’ve been poisoned until days after eating the highly toxic fungi.

While the mushrooms are historically endemic to Scandinavia and parts of northern Europe, the cultivation of non-native species of trees in North America has led to a “mushroom boom” in some areas of the continent.

Life Up Close is a project of The Atlantic, supported by the HHMI Department of Science Education.

DESOLATION | LONDON

Testing the Kessler KillShock Isolator rigged up to the Movi Pro and my RED Weapon Gemini on top of my Defender.

Painful getting up at 3am to only capture a glimmer of Sun before cloud cover.

Shot by Harry Miller (my Son) with the Mimic & PS4 remote. DP'd by me. Used the lovely little Atomos Ninja V for monitoring as you can actually see what your capturing.

Graded with DELUTS 2019 film set (FUJI FILM) coming March.

Dream

One day, I saw this dazzling darkness, and it devoured me. Then, I no longer existed.

We often tend to dream, expect, and imagine the things we wished we had. Dreaming is a catalyst for a better future. However, I see dreams in two different ways. One being that dreams give off a sense of motivation and the other that dreams create a sense of delusion within. As humans, our dreams block us from seeing the things that are right in front of us. Although dreams are meant to keep us alive, they also make us forget our existence and our purpose. In the end, our lack of awareness of our surroundings can drive us to forget who we really are.

The project, Dream, is a short film that is created based on a visual poem, “Lonely Wintry Moon,” which I wrote portraying myself losing my existence to follow this invisible dream.

Dream.

Life is like a warm breeze that carries the redolent of spring, the colors that transmute the sky from dusk till dawn. Like a little chaste sprout that just pushed out the ground dauntlessly. A small water drop that just landed on a wild flower to tell its story from a long itinerary

But I’m an indigent goldfish that is floundering helplessly in this tiny bowl enveloped by hollow plastic plants and just gazing at this beautiful world; a xanadu I can’t be a part of it

I am a puddle on the street that reflects the blue sky and makes graceful ebb and flow of waves coalesced with the spring breeze

but I’m merely a deserted puddle wandering aimlessly. Then a bleak, lonely wintry moon devoured my life. The life of warmth, beauty, love, and passion departed. Then, time stopped, everything lost its colors. It froze my heart and only the whiteness lingered in silence with me

The Otherworldly creatures of "Filtrate" - NOWNESS

In this new project laying bare the omnipotent power of technology in our personal lives, Californian director Mishka Kornai challenges the traditional narrative short by combining it with performance art, original costume, still photography and urban exploration.

The film’s leading characters are five visually unsettling non-terrestrial beings living in segregated sections of an underground bunker. Their outward appearance, which took the film’s costume team six months to build, resemble creatures made of party streamers, cardboard polyhedrons, humanoids in gilded or aristocratic dress, and a malformed quadruped with a beaded face.

These extraordinary creatures’ only interactions take place on a digital interface. Using alien runes they either swipe, like, sort or rate each other from afar. “The seemingly benign and even desirable filtration of the information we consume every day is creating environments and communities that are successively smaller and more homogenous,” Kornai comments.

Filtrate’s sterile subterranean setting, shot in Montréal’s subway system, acts as a visual counterweight to the film’s kaleidoscopic grouping of characters. “Montréal’s metro system was the central inspiration for the project. The design of the costumes, the shot choices, and even the structure of the story itself were all shaped by it,” the filmmaker explains.

Kornai’s public profile rose in 2018 after directing John Legend’s music video, A Good Night, which was commended for being entirely shot on the Google Pixel 2 phone. As well as founding the LA smartphone filmmaking collective Pickpocket, Lucas continues to show his dedication to guerrilla filming projects by shooting Filtrate on an iPhone 7. The pioneering director comments, “The digital spaces we inhabit today are increasingly personalized as technology improves to serve our individual desires.”

New York, 1905. Visionary inventor Nikola Tesla makes one final appeal to J.P. Morgan, his erstwhile benefactor. Inspired by real events, this electrifying short is a spectacular burst of image and sound that draws as much from the tradition of avant-garde cinema as it does from animated documentary.
